Greetings History Minions!
I hope you enjoyed the extended weekend--tell Christopher Columbus thanks!
This week I want you to reflect on what you've been reading and researching. Even on the eve of the Revolutionary War started, many people here insisted they were loyal British citizens who merely wanted their rights as Englishmen protected. Do you ever consider what it means to be "American"? What defining characteristics are considered "American"? Think about the descriptions of the 13 colonies you've been researching and reading about. Think about our Puritans, our Quakers, our poor, and our slaveholders.
Blog Question: Which of the three regions was truly the most "American", and what did that mean? First, you will have to decide what character and values made a place "American". Your text offered some discussion of this, and you may wish to begin by re-reading your C notes. Next, you will have to decide whether the New England, Middle, or Southern Colonies were the most American, and defend your answer with specific fact. Don't forget that when you reply to a classmate, you need to contribute a new fact, not repeat what was already said.
I look forward to reading your responses! Tell you what, if all of your Study Group completes both the blog post and response by Saturday 10 pm (a day early), I will excuse your lowest major grade. :D
Happy Blogging, History Minions!!
What does it mean to be an Ameri-can.
ReplyDeleteWell I think that there are many things that can mean refer to when they say they're an "American", but I think that the number one reason we consider ourselves "Americans" is because we are willing to fight for what we believe in.
In my opinion the most "American" region is the New England colonies, they really stood for what they believed in. Mostly because of the puritans, who did not tolerate anything that would be considered to be against God/their way of life. "It's was their way or the highway." and I believe that this is the kind of attitude we refer as the "American" attitude.
i disagree because when washington was president the new england colonies didnt want to fight for their counrty they cared more about their money than defending their own.
DeleteI'm sorry Kim, but you are incorrect. I agree with him for the reason of, why did people come to present day America in the first place? When did New England ever not want to fight for their own country? They didn't just care about money and defending their own. For one, they were educated. No other colony had more literate colonists than New England. Second, they had a town that was similar to a present day community. They weren't "defending their own.", they had schools and churches and a common place. They were the most American of any of those colonies. No questions.
Deletei disagree because america has a variety of different cultures and thats what makes us unique. the new england colonies werent free to worship just any religion. it was the puritans or nothing. yes they were the most civilized but were they really free to do what they came here for in the fisrt place?
DeleteIn my opinion, the new england colonies are the most "american" because to be "american" it means to be free. The new england colonies supported freedom of religion. This means anyones belief or religion is accepted. No one religion dominates or overpowers another. it also means peoole werent forced into religions not within thier beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI disagree because the New England colonies do not tolerate other religions(puritans for example)
DeleteIt did give you a choice of religion but mostly was puritans. With the puritans mostly in new england they also had some catholics in that religion.
DeleteThe values of being "American" meant that there were lots of races together sort of getting along, with some religion, and a freedom feeling too. Therefore, I believe that the Middle colonies were the most "American" of all because the people had an unusual degree of toleration,Quakers who made a contribution to human freedom. They were also the most ethnically mixed and land that was desired most was easily acquired in the middle colonies.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree Iban,
Deletefreedom feeling ?
~ I believe that the "Americans" really never had the sense of freedom at .
any point
~and if by races u mean culture I agree
And I got to say why do I always pick your post to answer to ? xD
To be American means, in my mind, to come to a place of freedom and claim a right to express and practice a way of life. The Puritans came over from England to practice and promote their freedom of religion. This led to many other social, economic and government bonds being broken, which opened the door to opportunities of free choice. This helped propose and create self government, self made decisions and brought forth a new way of life as well as thinking.
ReplyDeleteTaking full advantage of these new found rights were, as mentioned, the Puritans along with the pilgrims and other religious separatists. The puritans sought separation from the church of England. Many extreme puritans congregated and voted in a democratic state which created the Massachusetts bay colonies during the period of salutary neglect. This in itself was an amazing feat for any Englishmen who had only known monarch rule prior to leaving the mother country. This inspired all other religious separatists who colonized other new England colonies. Therefor it is in my opinion that the New England colonies were the most American in taking advantage of land opportunities, separation from the king and religious freedom.
I really liked how you elaborated upon the rights. Benign Neglect was one of the key factors in freedom to the colonists. It pushed them closer to their developments that have affected our government today.
DeleteWhat I believe to be "American" is the allowability of any person to have what are now present-day unalienable rights in any place, at any time. Every person should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I consider the Middle Colonies to have been the most "American" of the three colonial regions because they were the most diverse ethnically and religiously, like today's "melting pot". Additionally, more tolerance for the coexistence of several races and religious groups allowed people to live their regular daily lives the "Middle Way". The mixed populace had the liberty to choose their own religion and were treated as regular commoners who could pursue their dreams, although they were limited at the time. Unfortunately, most slaves of the Middle Colonies did not have these rights.
ReplyDeletei really like the fact that you included about the middle colonies being the most diverse becuase that strongly does reflect how america is today!
DeleteI agree with your statement that the middle colonies were the most accepting of other cultures in contrast to the other colonies. Although not completely fair with exactly everyone (slaves), they didn't necessarily attack on any group who didn't share their same perspectives on religion or anything else, as did other colonies.
DeleteI strongly agree with you Edgar because I couldn't find any other region that shared some of the charecteristics of current America and the Middle colonies were the one's that showed the most freedom.
DeleteThe Middle Way did have great toleration of other religions. The Middle colonies did accept many religions leading to the unalienable rights. I agree that these are some of the qualifications to be an American. They showed the most freedom and American's should except others point of views and religious beliefs.
DeleteIn my mind to be a real American is to love this country through its worst and best moments.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the middle colonies are the most American colonies. The middle colonies had the best soil so it helped them plant vegetables, fruits, and other crops. The main crops were wheat, barely, and corn. They used there rich soil smartly because of it they produced more food the the new england or southern colonies.
I agree with your first sentence. Being American does mean that you love your country but you didn't elaborate on it. You talked about the clonies farming not the pride in their country. You should've explained how the middle colonies "love" America as opposed to England.
DeleteI agree with you in that the middle colonies were the most "American", but what I don't agree with you in is that in your second sentence you said that they had the "Best Soil". Yeah they had good soil( Better than New England colonies) but the Best??? In my opinion the Southern colonies had the richest soil out of these three colonial regions.
DeleteIn my opinion the meaning of being an "American" is to freedom rights. To have an opinion, to be be able to say as you please, and believe in what you want to believe in. I believe the Middle Colonies were the most american out of the three. This is because the Middle Colonies were diverse in ethnicity and allowed any religion. They worked hard to earn what they had. Therefor I believe the middle colonies were the most Americans.
ReplyDeleteJoceline, I agree with your statement about being American is being free, I would also liketo add that being American is also to dream big and to accomplish these dreams.
DeleteTo me being American means to have freedoms, in the sense of opportunities. Which leads me to believe that the Southern Colonies were the most American, because they had a vast amount of land that was open for anyone, rich or poor to claim and start farms. Due to the slaves that were brought in farmers could make a bigger profit. So everyone had an opportunity to make a living even the ones that came here with nothing.
ReplyDeleteThis is very much true, but I would consider the southern colonies to be the most american. Their possession of land represented more of the economy and how they made their profits.
DeleteI agree that the southern colonies were the most american but what about the american vales of being diverse, even though the slaves were there by force the southern colonies had the most diversity.
DeleteI did say the Southern Colonies were the most American.
DeleteI agree that opportunity was given whether rich or poor anyone could start their own farm, that would make them the most american colonies because that's what being american is about and to have a better life.
DeleteTo be american was to contribute more to the community and to want to defend their country when in danger. The southern colonies did all of this they had the vast farms that most of their products brought in the money of america. They were the foundation of america and also during the revolution most of the southern colonist were the partiots while the rest were too busy being loyalist and not fighting for their independence
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kim, but I don't believe that they were the foundation of America because even though they brought in money for crops and other goods but I don't think money was the foundation since it didn't really help all the other colonies.
Deletei agree with your answer! I also believe southern colonies was more american. Due to their agriculture bringing in slaves, slaves brought in fighting for equal rights.
DeleteCharacteristics of a place I would consider "American" is a place where one has to freedom to express oneself how one pleases. Also, another aspect that would make a place "American" is that all the decisions are made by the people. I would say that the Middle Colonies were the most American because of the mixture of races and religions of its population. They all longed for one thing which was freedom and worked together to achieve it even if they were all different.
ReplyDeleteI disagree i think that you described more of the new england colonies i think the new england colonies are the ones that strived for freedom because of all the religions.
DeleteI believe to be "American" is knowing you have freedom, and able to do as you please. Its your life and as long as your not harming anyone else you are okay, where you have your rights protected and their your choices. I believe the southern colonies were more american in the sense they were able to provide for themselves and their family. They had to be self sufficient. They were not all forced to do something, they didn't want to. They were able to do as they pleased from the wealthiest down to the poor.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you think the Southern Colonies were the most American . Yes the Middle Colonies were most diverse and New England had different types of religions but Southern Colonies were a major contribution to our country wether it was good or bad . They were very self sufficient like you said and even though slavery was a key for their wealth on the long run it brought good things to our country . Slavery created heroes like Martin Luther King Jr (many years after the colonies were est.) whom help us gain freedom for all permanently and that is what truly makes us American.
DeleteIn my opinion, to be "American" is to be diverse, mixing all races and cultures together. I consider the southern colonies to be the most American because they had the slaves there and also the Europeans. Even though the slaves were there against their will, they still had their cultures and practiced them, and the whites had their ways and practiced them.
ReplyDeleteI agree that to be "American" means to be diverse. However, the Middle Colonies were, in fact, the most diverse colonial region of colonial America. The Middle Colonies' tolerance for others encouraged many to settle their. Different religious groups and races of Europe came to reside their because they were able to practice their beliefs freely and live their lives the "Middle Way".
DeleteI do agree with you they americans are diverse. I also agree that the southern colonies were the most american because even though it was inhumane, they were free enough to have their own slaves.
DeleteWhen i hear the word ''American'' the first connotation that comes to my mind is,education. Education is a very powerful advantage that one can posses and in America every child has the right to a free education. In my opinion the New England colonies were the most ''American'' because their main values were church, self government and education. The church, town hall and a SCHOOL were always somewhere in the center of their towns. It was very important that every puritan child was taught to read and write so that they could interpret the bible.
ReplyDeleteI like how you thought of education and I agree! In New England, education was a huge role in their society. Literacy was essential for the bible studies since the Puritans in New England were all about God, religion and His way. They wanted to follow God's rules and guidelines as close as they could.
DeleteTo me being American means striving to achieve our goals, creating a better country for the future generations. Being American means to do anything in your power to succeed. The New England colonies seem to me the most American. Their religious beliefs motivated the hard work they put into their land. They were setting an example for the rest of the colonists and at the same time creating a community for themselves. They also created a set of rules that came from within a contract. This gave a sense of rules. It gave them restrictions and civilization. Almost like a government would.
ReplyDeleteI like how you brought up the fact they they created a set of rules within themselves like a government. We used their self-governments as examples for our own government.
DeleteI didnt't think of how New England's actions would effect the other colonies thoughts, but now I can see how they would have set examples for the others. I like your answer.
DeleteWhen I hear the word American I think about liberty. Here in America, we have the liberty to practice any religion we want without being judged. To me the Middle Colonies were the most American. They allowed people to settle and follow and believe any religion you wanted. They weren't judgemental about people's beliefs. The Middle Colonies also contributed a lot to America by being the "Bread Basket" Colonies. It contributed a lot to the economy by producing crops and other things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I like how you used the word "Liberty" instead of "freedom:. Although, both words have the same meaning.
DeleteThe characteristics that make a place "American" are the ability for citizens to express themselves and spread their own culture, instead of trying to follow other cultures. Some values that make a place american are striving independence, the pursuit of happiness, and unity. Without these values, this country would not exist. In my opinion, the Middle Colonies were the most American of the three regions. Not only because of religious tolerance that characterized them so well, but also because they did not go with the flow and tried to follow other cultures, they stuck with their own beliefs and culture. Although the citizens were of various ethnicities, they managed build up this lucrative region. These settlers were yearning to be independent and were willing to unify for the sake of the region's well being.
ReplyDeleteI lovbge that you brought up the Middle Colonies attempts and motions to form and govern in unity. Unlike neighboring colonies, the Middle Colonies attempts In collaboration and the practice of consideration could have very well changed the course of the "American" way and its values.
DeleteWhat I believe being "American" means is having the ability get an education, own land, live free, but at the same time still take responsibility for your own actions. In my opinion, the middle colonies were the most "American" out of the three colonial regions. Having the most diversity of religion out of the three regions and being able to follow your own religious beliefs gave the middle colonies that freedom feeling.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much agree, and that's because when the quakers set up a colony, many other religions also followed because of the religious freedom.
DeleteThis is a good post but I disagree with the fact that the middle colonies had a diversity in religion because the middle colonies were religious extremists. But I do agree with the fact that they were very diverse so overall good post.
DeleteAmerican. Hmm, American? American is about being free, helping fellow citizens out when in need, and establishing a way to make income. To me, I believe the Middle Colonies best represent "American". Why? Because they (The Middle Colonies) allowed citizens to worship whatever they pleased. They served as a economic helper since they did have great land to grow crops and things. When the crops were grown, they were sold to various regions and also exported. To be American, means to make money and obtain a better life. They made money from selling crops, and also saved some, since you could grow your own food. And who doesn't have a better life being rich, right?
ReplyDeleteEveryone's talking about religion and freedom in general. An idea that I thought of when thinking about being "Americanized" was having modern-day technology and advancements. This led me to think that the New England colonies were more Americanized because they were more industrialized. The other two colonies relied more on agriculture, cash crop and those kinds of things.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true. They were one of the first to become more industrialized than the other colonies.
DeleteTo me when I think of American I think of Freedom, Free Education, better jobs and Freedom of Religion! By that being said I would have to say that the Middle Colonies would have to be more American than the New England & Southern Colonies. The Middle Colonies had freedom of religion and they had shipbuilding and lumbering industries which provided jobs.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but don't forget they also had a lot of diversity which to me, made them more American along with the freedom of religion.
DeleteAs an American, what comes to mind is opportunity. Here, we're able to create our own. As did the southern colonies whom are the most American, in my perspective. Creating their own plantations, making great progress in the sense of profits and free labor (although morally wrong) took the opportunity at hand and made it possible. They did what they needed to go to get what they needed. Although the other colonies may have done the same, to my prior knowledge, the southern colonies were the ones who really took it into depth and used any advantage they had.
ReplyDeleteI also think of "opportunity" as an American as well as hard work. Although I believe the New England colonies were the most American, I can definitely see why you think the southern colonies were. Like I said, I think of hard work and that is exactly what the southern colonies did. They set up their own plantations and did what they had to do in order to be a successful. Also, because there weren't many schools around, the kids were taught at home meaning they found education important just as America does.
DeleteI never thought of it that way! Yes, the fact that the southern colonies were able to rise up from plantations and hard work indeed demonstrates that they were determined to use their opportunities. Just remember they weren't the only ones that took advantage of their opportunities. The New England colonies definitely took advantage of their natural resources in order to prosper when they had no land to work.
DeleteAna Mendoza
Being "American" I feel is being stubborn but strong at the same time. Because New England was so stubborn to get their religious beliefs to be appreciated and gain as much land, even if it meant killing many indians, I would consider them the most "American". Being stubborn is not necessarily a bad thing, New England got their colony to where they wanted by being stubborn, seperating from the kings rules, and keeping their beliefs strong.
ReplyDeleteI disagree because not all wanted to be religious extremist who came to the colonies.
DeleteTo be "American" means to have a sense of freedom and diversity.
ReplyDeleteThe middle colonies were the most "American" because they were most ethnically diverse which made them have a little more freedom.
The Middle Colonies also had freedom of Religion too and since they had freedom and diversity thats why I agree that the Middle Colonies were the most American out of the 3 colonies.
DeleteI disagree because the middle colnies did not have freedom of religion because of the religious extremists.
DeleteMarlon i think you are confusing the middle colonies with the New England colonies. I say this because New England had religious extremist, not the middle. Religious extremist=Pilgrims
DeleteMarlon, the middle colonies were definitely more diverse than any of the other colonies. There weren't really any religious extremists there. I agree with Michelle and Samantha's comments.
DeleteAlthough the textbook says that historians believe the Middle Colonies were the most American, I personally believe that the New England colonies were the most American. When I think of America, I think of the ambition to be successful and hard work it takes to stand up for what you believe in. That is exactly what the Puritans did in order to settle and become the New England colonies. They did not want to be under the kings control or apart of the church of England, so they took matters into their own hands and made their own settlement. Although they were a theocracy, they still believed that having their own government and school systems was important just like we do here in America.
ReplyDeletei agree with this part "ambition to be successful and hard work it takes to stand up for what you believe in." because when we think of america we think who it was build up to this day. the founding fathers and the declaration of independence. which why i see your point on why new england colonies was your choice.
DeleteFor me the word "American" means to have freedom, freedom of speech, religion, etc you name it. And according to my definition of American, the colonial region that seems to be the most American is the Middle colonies because they were the region that allowed freedom of religion and were the most ethnically diverse by allowing the practice of different types of cultures. Also due to their liberal ideas in the government they established a democracy, but yet a lot of changes were to be done for it to be like the one we currently have. All of this eventually describes the reason why they are called the "Middle Way." Overall we currently have a country that defines the word American better than any colonial region but if I had to choose one like I said it would be the Middle region.
ReplyDeleteAmerica is free. I agree. However, when our constitution was written there was a lot of limitations as to who was free. America is more than just being free. America is having the capacity, the faith, and the knowledge to seek freedom. I believe the Middle Colonies were not those who truly sought freedom with the passion that can be considered American.
DeleteI disagree. I believe that the New England colonies were the most American. The puritans came here seeking religious freedom an they obtained it.
DeleteWhat does it mean to be an American? I believe that it means to be strong, proud, and united. The most American, in my opinion, were the New England colonies. It is true that they might've had some disagreements with the other colonies/regions, but their religious beliefs and way of life prove it all. We can automatically tell how united they were by examining the set-up of their towns. The fact that they(puritans) were all "obsessed" with their religious views, created an even stronger bond between them.
ReplyDeleteAna Mendoza
I agree with your point because of the fact that the New England colonies were very strong and independent. However the fact that they had disagreements with others meant that they weren't as connected to the rest of the colonies.
DeleteMy definition of American is rebelling against all unfair and accepting everyone and considering all that needs to be considered. The middle colonies seem to have all of that. They respected each ethnicity and let people practice their own religions in peace. They had their own individual freedom.
ReplyDeletei agree the middle colonies is a good example of American. The rebelling aainst all unfair is a good point that I didn't think of.
DeleteTo be an american means to have pride in your country,The U.S.By that I mean is to live the life of an american:which is to exceed any challenge, and to deal with any circumtance that comes upon u.In my opinion the most'American'colonies were the new england colonies because they had the same cultural similarities with our society this days.
ReplyDeleteTo be American means to have pride in this country that we live in. Saying the Pledge of the Allegiance, singing the Star-Spangled Banner, and having a sense of glory waking up in this nation. That is what it means to be American. The colony that was the most American, however, was the New England Colonies. This nation was BUILT on religious freedom from England. And who was more religious than the New England Colonies?
ReplyDeleteOne specific fact was the New England Colonies are the most American was that no other colony had the most religious activity then what they did. They were SO religious that they had fights over religion and they would banish anyone who even questioned it. When America was formed, it was for the purpose of freedom of religious prosecution. No other colony did it better than New England.
To be an "American" I think means to show the perfect example of what "American" really is, which I think the New England colonies did. They believed that religion was a big thing and now a days it is too. Setting the perfect example was a big key to the Puritans, they were driven, believed it gave a sense of purpose to act like a saint. Even though acting perfect might not be so "American" but it gives a sense that they wanted to be the best for the country.
ReplyDelete"God Bless America" Although, America today is now a diverse, multi-ethnic, and multi-relgious nation, I believe America was given life by those who sought to please their lord. Remember God, Gold, and Glory. Well, what is one sure thing that the colonists found in America? They found God. In New England, the puritans and protestants found a place where they may set an example of how to live by the word of God. Although we may not all share the same faith today, we do share many of the values that the New England colonists believed holy. We cherish knowledge and fear a state of being illiterate. We may use it for than reading the Bible, but we can read because someone once valued it so strongly that it became a requirement. Americans believe hard work is necessary. We do it for ourselves as opposed to simply for the glory of God, but we acknowledge that living well is worth sweating for. The community is in the safe hold of the government. New England valued community and believed that as a people we should help one another. Well, America attempts to provide a certain amount of health care, and wellfare for those who are in need of it. America takes its taxes and provides schools. There is power to our people just as in New England, there was a form of representative government that did not include the king. America takes after New England. We took what we needed and left the rest to destiny. Just as they took what they valued most from England and changed the rest and left their lives in the hands of God. They are the true Americans.
ReplyDeleteI think the most " American" region was the Middle Colonies. The first thing that comes to mind when someone say America is diversity. To me, America is full of diverity. There's a lot of diversity in ethnics, religion, and ect. The freedom we have in America lets us be as diverse as we can than other contries. The Middle colonies is the best example of diversity. Middle colonies was the most diverse in ethnics and religion out of all the colonies. I think the middle colonies showed a little bit of the future of America.
ReplyDeleteExactly what does being an American mean? There is no exact definition for it. Many people see it in many different ways. On the other hand, in my opinion being an American means being able to be free. Being an American means to have diversity. Now this brings me to the next question. What colony is the most American? Well according to my definition of American I believe the middle colonies were the most American. I say this because they actually believed in the freedom of religion. Not just saying you have freedom of religion but for only one religion like the puritans. The middle colonies had a lot diversity. Both ethnically and socially.
ReplyDeleteAmerican values are to be able to freely choose your religious beliefs, such as the southern colonies. The people in the southern colonies were given more freedom to worship anything, because religion wasn't as important to their culture as the other colonies.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Alex. The ability of praticing any religion we want to is what makes us American. That is the reason why the middle colonies had a diversity of religions.
DeleteTo me to be American it means less about who you are than what you are about, it's how you contribute to this country . It's the people who in their struggles , joys and victories fight for this country to be a better place whom fight to defend what has taken alot to build up.
ReplyDeleteTo me the most American colonies was the Southern Colonies and that is only because Virginia -The Old Dominion- was one of them . Virgina was the largest and most populous and it was the first successfully established . It was the beginning of what we now call America .Home to many of the most prominent founding fathers, great presidents generals, soldiers, senators, state representatives, and political leaders in the nation .Many of the original ideas to form a nation came from Virgina. Virginia's post colonial governor(from 1776-1779) , Patrick Henry's Give me Liberty, or give me Death! speech to the Virgina Convention, it's a very important speech to our nation.
And Although Virgina was the first state to accept slavery , it was also the first to end it . Slavery might not have been a good factor from the Southern Colonies to our country but it did contribute to a lot of our history . Slavery's outcomes were great heroes like Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. Even though I am only focusing on one southern colony ,I feel like the southern colonies over all were the one who contributed to our American History the most , wether it was good or bad it is what made us America.
To be American is to be free, to have a future full of opportunities, and to love your neighbor despite cultural difference and ethnicity. The colonies that portrays a now modern America is the Middle colonies, because it was a melting pot of different ethnic groups and ideas. For example in New York there was the Dutch. Another example is Rhode Island, it was most know for being the first of the colonies to show tolerance towards different religions.America is the same as well,we have over 313 religions in America, and we all work hand in hand for the good of the people.
ReplyDeleteTo be an American is to have pride for the country you live in, to show care for America, to accept all who live in America and finally to do something for America. The Middle Colonies were the best to fit under the qualifications I listed above. They accepted all. The had huge tolerance for religious beliefs and showed accepted all ideas. In the middle colonies it was also easier to get plantations and plant crops. This allowed the people to have plantations and better the economy. Here there were all different kinds of people who were all proud to be there because of how accepting and inviting the Middle colonies were.
ReplyDeleteTo be American means to work together and fight for what you believe in. In my opinion the most 'American' colony was the Southern Colonies. The Southern Region was big on slavery, which caused a slight disturbance in producing "America". If slavery had not happened then maybe America today wouldn't be such a supporter of freedom to all races, nor maybe the Civil Rights of People would have taken place.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word "american", I think about cheeseburgers, crazy people, and the flag. That would be my mexican point of view of this country. The southern colonies seemed to have been the most american because they seemed more care free and they did most of their things themselves like food, shelter, and other things. To be an american is to be self sufficient and do what ever they want.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but i disagree because america is the land of the free. Yea the south did did all things by its self but not their selfs their selfs because all the slaves work for all what the south had so wheres freedom in there.
DeleteIn my opinion themost american colony would be the middle colonies. I bleive its the middle colonies because it had someof the most diversityof any of the colonies. Just like it is now in america. We have all types of religion, culture, and beliefs just like the middle colonies.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. the middle colonies were very divers with all types of religion. They believe that no matter what religion you still believe in God and that's all that mattered. They worked together because of it .
DeleteI believe that being an American means being proud and strong in your beliefs and morals, but being open minded at the same time. An American gives their best in everything that they do and never gives up. The colonies that best represented my definition of an American were the middle colonies. They practiced their beliefs, but didn't try to force them upon anyone else. They were the most tolerant and diverse colonies out of the thirteen. They also worked hard and excelled in all of their work.
ReplyDeletethe Middle Colonies were the most American because they were characterized by the most ethnic and religious diversity. New York, a Dutch colony settled primarily by members of the Dutch Reform Church., but which also had French settlers and people from other European nations. Since the Dutch had a policy of religious toleration. It influenced the most because it was so diverse.
ReplyDeleteThe Definition of being American in my eyes is to be loyal nd willing to fight for what is yours. it is difficult to decide what region of the colonies was most "American" but I have to go with the Southern Colonies because they fought all the way to the end for what they believed in and didn't give up. Plus they had pride
ReplyDeleteI think that being an american means to have respect, pride, and honor in your country. It means to have opportunitites that once were never yours and have a chance at them. I believe that the most american colony was the new england colonies. Though there were differences between them and the other colonies the new england colony shows the most comparison with the u.s. One example is the freedom of religion that the new england colonies came to find and the freedom represented here in the us.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your opinion. The New England colonies weren't that fond of freedom of religion. The major religion found in the New England colonies was Puritan, and they weren't that fond of other religions.
DeleteI disagree because the New England colonies had more opportunities than all and believe the other regions wanted what the New England colonies always had.
DeleteBeing an American means to have freedom and liberty. It means to have a new life. People come to American for a better life! Being an American means to be free from those who don't want to give freedom. Being an American means to reach your goals. In my opinion the New England colonies are the most American. The puritans came here seeking for rigorous freedom. They came from New England looking for a new way of life. They are a perfect example of an American because they came seeking for religious freedom , fought for what they wanted and got what they wanted.
ReplyDeleteBeing American would call for much diversity and immigration of some kind weather it was willingly or forcefully. As you might know America is built off of immigrates from England meaning most Americans are immigrates . The southern colonies would change the very fabric of American life due to a big yet simple slave trade. That would not only cause civil dispute later, it would also mean one of the bloodiest wars the world has ever seen. In the end America would simply adjust and become accustomed to whatever new diverse thing that would come about.
ReplyDeleteTo be American, in my opinion, means to be free to do whatever you wish (with some limitations, of course) and accept others regardless of their religion, ethnicity, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe most American colony has to be the Middle Colonies because they had the most religious tolerance out of the rest of the regions. Most of the immigrants that moved the Americas landed in the Middle Colonies, allowing it to have the highest diversity out of all the other regions in the colonies.
i think the middle colonies was the most american out of the 3. being american is youre free to do what you want. you are independent and giving rights that you deserve. the middle colonies werent the 1st to establish churches and schools but they did not have to follow only one way of life which was the puritans.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion what it means to be an American is to live with freedom and rights. Americans love and come together in times of need. Americans help other places all over the world and show respect towards on another. Americans are powerful. The most American colony was the middle colonies. The middle colonies had a diverse ethnic group and the best religious tolerance. The middle colonies accepted anyone/everyone who came and settled there.
ReplyDeleteThe region that was the most "american" was the New England colonies. I believe this because of the education that they were given. For example the pilgrims and puritans who taught the younger ones how to read and write. Also based on their social status it was determined what kind of education they received. Very similar to America now, education is encouraged greatly.
ReplyDeleteThe region that I think is most AMERICAN is the Middle Colonies. The resaons why is because the Middle Colonies are the most ethnically and religiously diverse colonies. Each one of their states have a large variety of people and each one has a different religion they pratice.
ReplyDeleteI agree, The Middle Colonies also had many work opportunities and they were the first establishment of Proprietary Colonies.
DeleteThe Middle Colonies were the most American , because they were the first religious tolerance established colony. The practice of any religion was allowed in the Middle Colonies. The Middle Colonies were also the most ethnically diverse. Education was mainly mostly for the wealthy though. The Middle Colonies were known for their ethnic diversity, religious tolerance, mixed occupations, and mixture of Northern and Southern colonies.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. You added that the middle colonies had mixed occupations. I didn't mention that in my comment. The middle colonies were indeed the most American out of the three colonies.
DeleteEverybody was accepted in the new england colonies why do you thing that later on runaway slaves traveled to the north not the middle.
DeleteI believe that the New England colonies were the most "American". They truly believed in freedom among the people along with the factor of freedom of religion. The people had the right to choose what they felt was best for them.
ReplyDeleteI belive that the most american region was the new england colonies, why? Because what is america based on, religion. Many people may say that were not, but what do we have on our money, "In God We Trust".
ReplyDeleteI believe the southern colonies were the most "American" because to be really american you have to be strong and earn that title. I believe the south eventhough being so poor and filthy had more of a real world effort unlike the other regions. They may not had it all but at least they did the most work and labor and that meant they were strong.
ReplyDeleteAmerican is a term that to my understanding would be best given to the Middle Colonies. While they had a diverse community they also had a wide variety of religion and culture. They believed in having a feeling of acceptance to any kind of people that came to live in the Middle Colonies . The Middle Colonies had a sense of opportunity which made many colonists feel welcomed with their beliefs and their morals.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes an american an american is that he or she will fight for what they belive in, will always say what they are thinking, and they are not scare of nothing. Just like the New england colonies. They got here and change every thing the way of government, the freedom of religion, and always tried the make america better in everything.
