Week of 10/15-10/21 (8th Week of 1st 9 Weeks)

Greetings History Minions!

We are getting close to the end of the first 9 weeks!  I really enjoyed reading your comments last time!  You took the time to reply to your peers with a NEW FACT and most of you were very careful NOT TO REPEAT WHAT WAS ALREADY SAID.  Way to go!

Here's my new question:  The French and Indian War (1754-1763) altered the relationship between Britain and the North American colonies.  Assess this change with regard to ONE of the following things between 1763 and1775:
  • Land acquisition
  • Politics
  • Economics
Remember, you need to contribute new information to the discussion.  When you reply to a classmate, don't forget to use a FACT.  :)

Happy Blogging, History Minions!

The French and Indian War altered the relationship between Britain and the North Americans.with the treaty of paris the french could not get any land in north america which caused britian to get the land.due to native americans attacks britian basically said we dont want you going west of the appalachian mountains. the colonist people believed they deserved the land because they fought with the french for the land. tthis caused the american revolution.

    2. Yes, the fact that taxes were imposed amongst the colonists played a vital role in the changing between their relationship. It is the reason for many outbreaks and caused animosity between the two.

  2. An economic change between Britain and the American Colonies was that the colonists had to bear some of the burden of paying for the war through taxation. The war had cost the British around 140 million euros, half of which had been spent defending the American colonies, so they thought that the colonists should pay some of it. That is when taxes started to raise, starting with the Sugar Act of 1764, which raised the tax on foreign sugar. Then came the Quartering Act, the Stamp Act, and so on. These taxes made the American colonies angry, which establish the idea of No Taxation Without Representation.

  3. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued Britain's acquisition of French territory in North America after the end of the French and Indian War, in which it forbade settlers from settling past a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains. The purpose of the proclamation was to organize Great Britain's new North American empire and to stabilize relations with Native North Americans through regulation of trade, settlement, and land purchases on the western frontier. This also may have led to the Louisiana purchase, because as we all know, the colonists didn't obey Britain's orders.

    1. I agree with you, Joe. But how could it have lead to the Louisiana Purchase if that was not til 1803?

    2. But they were also very upset about being taxed so much also.

    3. Louisiana Purchase ended the French presence from North America completely which is what the British had hoped with the Indian-French war . It kind of had to do with the Proclamation of 1763 since the the land gained had been obtained from the French after winning the war.

    4. I see where you are going with the Louisiana purchase. It was a way to achieve manifest destiny. After being constrained to the east, Americans sought to go as far west as possible. The Louisiana Purchase could have been a way to accomplish this by gaining land west of the Appalachian mountains from the French. Although not until 1803, it could still have been in the heart of Americans. Events that occur before our time affect our predecessors' psyche and thus could remain in a strong presence even after they are gone. Americans were left with the desire to roam freely after being caged up. Although this is not written in history, my theory still holds up okay. Thanks for giving me something to think about, Joe. (:

    6. I understand what you mean Eric. So to clarify what I said was that The Louisiana Purchase was an EFFECT of the French- and - Indian War. The war was just the cause. It is similar to the "Domino Effect".

  4. Following the aftermath of the French and Indian War, Britain was heavily indebted because of the accumulative costs that were needed to support and supply an overseas army and the repair the damages made from warfare over the period of nine years. Out of fear for another financially depleting war, Britain forbade the American colonists from settling or exploring areas west of the Appalachian Mountains with the Proclamation of 1763. The proclamation was enacted in the hopes of preventing any further conflicts with the Native Americans. The American colonists, however, were angered by this action because they wanted to reap the potential benefits that could come with the acquisition of western lands. Some colonists were hindered from expanding westward since British troops halted all movement heading west of the Appalachians, but the proclamation soon proved to be relatively ineffective since many colonists disregarded the imaginary boundary line. This proved to be a problem for those who already claimed land in the west, for some were pushed off their land, but ultimately since too many settlements were beyond the limits of the proclamatory line colonists regained their land and were recognized as western settlements.

  5. Politically the Americans begun branch off from the mother country and start their own government. They wanted to be on their own. They didn't agree with the British because they were in debt due to them sending troops to the colonies during and after the French and Indian War. The British attempted placing taxes on everyday things used by the colonist in order to slightly overcome the debt. The colonist didn't believe they should be the ones to pay so when the taxes so the begun with the "No Taxation Without Representation". The Americans begun to stand on their own with help of the French in order to gain their freedom and no longer be under British control.

  8. The French and Indian War altered the the Britain and North American colonies by having conflict with land acquisition. French and England had a colonial conflict over territory (land) and wealth. They both wanted to increase their land size. The English sent a message to the French demanding them to withdraw their troops from their land and the French rejected it. This led to more demands and rejections. And that led to small battles. They were serious and demanded their land. This created great tension between the two.

    2. This would be a great response if you were to assess the subject of land acquisition with the change of relationship between the French and the English. However, I believe we were supposed to assess the change of relationship between the English and their North American colonies with one of the three topics mentioned in the prompt. Still, the relationship between the English and the French was very hostile during the French and Indian War. Both powers were interested in conquering North America to benefit their "3 G's" plan - to attain gold from the area, to spread their specific belief in God or practice their own belief freely, and to acquire land, ergo giving them power.

    3. this is true, and it goes with my statement because after the french and indian war conflicts kept coming up more and more often with the demands and taxes.

  9. The French and Indian War is to blame for the American Revolution. Ideologically, it brought up colonial feelings of resentment toward Britain. It also changed the political relationship between England and its colonists because the English were forced to unfairly tax them due to their economical struggles. The colonists in turn, boycotted, thus further damaging their economic relationship with their mother country. After the French and Indian War, America would never be the same.

  14. Using rational reasoning, the French and Indian War altered the relationship between the American Colonies and Britain by bringing up colonial resentment towards their mother country. This connects with how their relationship altered economically and politically. Because the French and Indian War caused the British to go into exorbitantly debt, they unfairly and brutally taxed them (the colonists). This caused the colonists to boycott and begin the American Revolution in order to gain independence and start over all by themselves, in hopes to become a new nation.

  15. As some may know the French and Indian War drove away the British's attention from the Colonies for 9 years allowing them to exercise self-government and not enforcing strict laws on them which the colonists benifited from, this was called Salutary Neglect. After the war everything went down hill for the colonies they were politically impacted as the British turned their eyes back at them and placed a tight leash upon them. The British stopped the colonies from having independent goverenments, like the Virginia House of Burgesses. Also, the Proclamation for 1763 was passed, stopping the colonists from moving west of the Appalacian Mts.;multiple taxes like the Stamp and the Tea acts were also passed. Basically, after the French and Indian war, the British kept a politically tighter leash on the colonies, pushing them towards independence.

    1. I agree with the fact that Salutary Neglect was one factor which increased self government for the colonies. While after the war British held the colonists in a situation that would end their debt. After which self government was ended in the colonies by the British.

  16. A political change caused by the French and Indian War was Britain's abandonment of salutary neglect towards the colonies. Soon, taxes and regular trade began to be forced on the colonists again. This is because Britain had gained more land after the war(the rich Ohio Valley), but did not have a strong economical status to control it. This also led to the colonists feeling more distant from the crown and begin believing they could achieve independence.

  17. Economically, the British required America to ship things such as raw materials. America put up with it for a while especially because of the Navigation Acts, meaning America was only allowed to ship to England. Then, Britain started to tax America (Stamp Act and Molasses Act) in order to pay for the war because they were already in debt. Soon, Americans became angry which is where the saying, "No taxation without representation" came from. That was the beginning of conflict between America and Britain.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree mainly because of the whole raw materials thing. That was a huge problem since sometimes the colonies would sell raw materials practically for free to England. They would cut off their trade with other foreign nations preventing profit that could have tripled their money making from selling to England.

  18. The French and Indian war changed many things but one thing it changed was where the colonists could settle.
Settlement Limit A Proclamation is issued by the British government, forbidding American colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. Which made settling very difficult for the colonists.
They thought it would prevent future conflicts but really included more. The colonists were very anger when the Proclamation of 1763 was passed they began to ignore the laws.

  19. The Seven Year War caused Britain, even though they were victorious, to be in a lot of debt, causing them to begin reforming colonial administration, enforcing tax laws, and placing troops in the colonies. The relationship between America and the Britain, became very strained due to this.

  20. Before the French and Indian War, Britain barely enforced laws in the colonies. After the French and Indian War, Britain had to find a way to get their money back. But it also led to the end of mercantilism. The taxes put onto these items seemed unjust to the colonists and refused to support the trade.

  23. The French and Indian War altered the relationship between the British and North American colonies by competing for land and trading rights which then caused the war, but since the Indians lived in the same region it turned into basically war between Indians and French. The war caused many indian nations changed their war policies and turned their backs on the French. They had better resources than the British and the French had little hope and lost the whole North American continent.

  24. After the war , British gained land from the French. Colonists whom had fought or lost family on the French Indian War expected to use this land for new settlement . However Natives still lived in this areas and Colonists didn't treat them so well .Therefore the King didn't want to deal with this issue and pass the Proclamtion of 1763 which stopped the colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mts. The Proclamation of 1763 dealt with the "Indian" problem, essentially ignoring the native people and restricting colonial ventures to all territory east of the Appalachian Mountains. This slowly led to the American colonists wanting to gain independence from the British and the creation of a self government.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The French and Indian War led to political unrest among the Britain and its colonies. The war left Britain in a debt of approximately 50 billion pounds in contemporary times. As we all know, in a time of war, the burden is felt by the citizens. The British in the home land were already being overly taxed and refused to pay more while the colonists were wealthy and prosperous, yet paid less. The colonists were then asked to pay half of the cost used to protect them and refused. This led to Parliamentary Taxation. They were taxed on everything from travel to legal documents and sugar. Although the colonists managed to pay these taxes just fine, it was still and insult to be taxed by a nation that offered them no place in government. The colonists had reached their moment in history were they were "militarized" by the recent training during the war, ambitious and defiant to any rules of restrained settlements, and simply a child ready to let go of their mother's hand. They sought independence and thus began the American Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The French and Indian war had a big economic effect on the English. Since the english beat the British they were upset. So, to get "revenge" they decided to impose high taxes on the colonist. What better way to get revenge than make people pay more right? This angered the colonist and lead to the colonist to disrespect British loyalty.

    ReplyDelete
  27. After the war, the British ended salutary neglect and kept the North American colonies under their wing. They imposed higher taxes to pay for the war, taxes such as the stamp act, sugar act, etc. This change in the colonies would later lead to the revolutionary war. The change in the economy was highly important because this is what truly infuriated the colonials, thus leading to the American revolution.

Before the war, north american colonies were profiting from salutory neglecy, meaning that the british were neglecting the colonies and the colonies were benefiting from it. After the war, the british put more of a tight leash upon the colonies. They stopped the colonies from having independent governments. The stamp and tea acts were also passed. 33. After the French and Indian war, Great Britain was left in total debt. In order to pay this off, they began to tax the colonies. This led to tension between the two. Britain also began to enforce their policies of mercantilism, and the animosity between them and their colonies only increased from there.

  34. The French and Indian War altered the Britain and North American colonies by having conflict with land acquisition between 1763 and 1775. Land and wealth were two of the many reasons why French and England had a colonial conflict between each other. As the French and England began to expand towards one another, they were destined to come into conflict. The treaty of aix-la-chapelle did little or nothing towards marking out boundaries and stopping conflict in North America. They both wanted a larger mass of territory no matter what cause and once they met, the conflict began. The French rejected a demand from England for their land and all of this led to small battles between the two. This later turned into a war wich led to economic troubles after it all.

  35. The French and the English were competing for land and trading rights in North America; these strivings resulted in a great deal of disputed land, particularly that of the rich Ohio Valley. Each nation saw this territory as vital in its effort to increase its own power and wealth while simultaneously limiting the strength of its rival. Although the war itself therefore stemmed from a fairly simple motivation, its consequences were far- reaching. The English victory in the war decided the colonial fate of North America, and yet at the same time sowed the seeds of the eventual colonial revolution. This was a change regarding land acquisition.

  36. After Britain's victory in the French and Indian War, relations between North American and Britain certainly altered. Due to Britain's gain of land, they needed the money they invested in acquiring this land back, and what other way to gain it than by taxing the colonies. This then angered the colonies. They felt they were being mistreated due to taxation without representation.

  37. The French and indian war left England with a great debt that they thought to pay with the excessive taxes placed on the colonies. Amongst these obsurd actions take up by the Mother country was the Navigation acts which made the colonies trade exclusively with England. Britain ofcourse wouldnt pay the colonies as much as other options( French and Spain) so this led to the colonies having to sneak around traiding with others or in other words. "enemy ports". Over taxation also led to the need for independance. Also there was a great feeling of unity because the French and Indian war encouraged it. Soldiers from diffrent colonies came together and the victory bolstered colonial self-esteem.

  38. The French and Indian war left Great Britain in massive dept. Naturally, the British in order to pay that off, began to tax the colonies. At first, it was tolerable, but soon grew irrational. They believed if they weren't being represented in Britain, the taxes were unjust-taxation without representation. (Political) Tensions rose and parliament became more intrusive on their rights. Eventually, Americans didn't want to be a part of Great Britain and soon began the colonial revolution.

  39. Relating to whole french and Idian war, the prime focus was money during that time. With all the dept England had they had to get rid of it some how so it was a simple tax the colonies thing. These absurd taxes is what led to our independence. What im getting at ,though, is that democratic government we would develop. If England hadn't pushed the colonies to such a point who knows how America would be today. Not mention with the demand for a representative government lead to diplomatic relations with the French which saved us from losing the war. Plus multiple other relations that became a huge impact on foreign trade.

  40. AFter the French and Indian War, Britain gained a large amount of land west of the colonies from France. However, since they were in debt, they issued the Proclamation of 1763, saying that colonists could not settle to the west of the Appalachian Mountains, so Britain wouldn't have to pay for more protection of the colonies from the Native Americans. Though the front title of the war doesn't name the U.S. Or the British but it symbalizes the alliances between the three powerful nations (U.S. & Britian& France). Now that the U.S. was in the story, Britian did not want to look like the "thrid wheel" or the 2nd best, they wanted to BE the best. The acts and wins taking place in this war not only changed laws and allianecs but was evincing who was the top nation & who could take the most land with the right resources. Not only that but in another way to think about the situation, its as if the mother (Britian) forced their offspring (U.S.) to obey & pay them back for taking care of them their entire life, even though the offspring is now an adultliving their own life.

  50. Economics. The war between the colonies and france wasnt cheap so britain had to find a way to pay for it so what better way than what theyve been using the colonies for. The colonies were used to pay for the war by being taxed on different things.

  51. Land acquisition was one factor that was easily prevented after the Seven Years War had ended. The French were ceded from their acquired land to the west of the Mississippi because of the Treaty of Paris. While there was an effect of the payment that the colonies had to offer to their mother country to pay of the debt that Britain had gotten into. After, this debt had been started by Britain there was the beginning of tax given to colonists. Which would increase the tension between the mother country and their colonies.

  52. The French and Indian war changed the relations between France and Britain because of debt and land problems. Britain gained part of the French Territory and established and empire and also were in debt which the colonies had to suffer that.

  53. Well the war gave an extra push to the colonies independence because Britain charge a lot of taxes for the colonies so that they could pay back all the money that went in the war. That made the colonies mad and started the revolution war.
