Compare the ways in which ONE of the following reflected tensions in colonial society:
- Bacon's Rebellion (1676)
- Pueblo Revolt (1680)
- Salem Witchcraft trials (1692)
- Stono Rebellion (1739)
Salem Witchcraft trials reflected colonial tensions between subsistence farmers and families associated with the burgeoning economy.Superstitions wasn't the only cause of the witch belief but also the rapidly evolving massachustes colony that arose unsettled social and religious conditions. Most of the witches came from families associated with the salems burgeoning market economy and they were blamed by the jealous subsitent farmers. The farmers feared that puritan beliefs were being replaced by commercialism so they had to find a way to get rid of it.The tension between the farmers and the market economy brought the death of nineteen individuals.
ReplyDeleteYup I agree and also a fact about the witch trials that some were, terrified, and with the hope of saving their lives or avoiding the horrors of imprisonment, would falsely accuse their friends. While others, moved by the same instinct and hopes, would falsely confess themselves witches. Neither age, sex, nor condition was spared
Deletemany of the people accused of witch craft were either sent to jail or executed.
DeleteBacon's Rebellion of 1676 reflected tensions in colonial society by showing how the poor, landless, free, single men were frustrated by the lack of money, women, work and land. They were put in hostile conditions and the were furious! All the men wished for these necessities and there was no way they could get them, This created great tension between them and the Indians, since the Indians had a friendly policy with Governor William Berkeley. They envied their friendly policy therefore, they rebelled. Nathaniel Bacon led the attack towards Indian settlements and the rebellion began.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Because of his rebellion, conflicts with the Indians sparked, which was unfortunate considering the governor was at peace with them.
DeleteI agree with you alejandra. Bacon's Rebellion rose because of the decrease in economy and lack of land.
DeleteI disagree with you because Bacon's Rebellion was actually tension between the indentured servants and the plantation owners, your probably mistaking it.
DeleteBacons rebellion was ignited by the want to preserve safety as the white settlers and the native Americans lived and shared the same land. Many of the European settlers wanted land that had already belonged to the Indians, this caused some tension as well as conflict. The tension that was occurring brought much violence to society, farmers were killing native American left and right , the white settlers greatly tried to alter the Indian way of life. This was all based in tension.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Lisa. Bacon's rebellion was based on solely tension between the native Americans and indentured servants that had been recently let go. Wouldn't you be mad if someone took away what was promised to you?
DeleteI agree with lisa as well and also Nathaniel Bacon didn't like the friendly relations the governor had with the indians so they took it upon them selves to run the government out and to deal with the native americans.
DeleteThe Stono rebellion was a slave rebellion in south Carolina. The Stono rebellion reflected tensions in colonial society because the government feared the slaves uniting together and revolting so they past harsh laws that would further limit their rights, thus giving us the Negro Act of 1740.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment! The slave population exceeded that of the slave-owners, so it was natural for them to fear the uprising of the slaves. The harsh laws that limited the rights of the slaves made them lash out. The Stono Rebellion reflects the tension that had been growing for years.
DeleteYes, very true also the uprising of this rebellion were Native americans that were catholic.
Deletei agree with your comment too! this caused huge tension with slave owners and slaves causing them to battle killing many african black Carolinians, resulting to the harsh slave code.
DeleteGreat response Rochelly, you excellently summarized this event in a nutshell. In addition to what you have said, the Stono Rebellion was, in fact, the largest slave uprising in the British colonies before the American Revolution, even though a total of less than one hundred slaves partook in the rebellion. Unfortunately, the rebellion was suppressed, just like previous and future attempts to overthrow oppressive slave owners.
DeleteThe plantation owners of the Southern Colonies feared that a union of the suppressed servants, Indians, Africans, and white indentured servants, may pose a potential threat to the safety of the well off. Soon enough, a threatening force composed of former white indentured servants were unified under the leadership of Nathaniel Bacon, unfortunately the rebellion was unsuccessful in the long run since their force did not incorporate Africans and Indians. The joining of the three suppressed groups would have been a large enough force to have posed real danger to the plantation owners. After the failed rebellion, plantation owners feared more potential threats by their servants, so to lessen the danger they switched to race based slavery and the white indentured servants eventually gained their freedom, for they were no longer wanted or needed. The now former indentured servants allied with the plantation owners, just as planned by the plantation owners so they could have the advantage over their slaves in case of another rebellion. After Bacon's Rebellion, white plantation owners had more direct conflict with African and Indian slaves. The white plantation owners no longer had much potential threats since the slaves were now more in check by the power of the new found alliance between plantation owners and former indentured whites.
ReplyDeleteThe Stono Rebellion cause tension in the colonies between the white plantation owners and slaves. When the whites saw that slaves could gather together and overpower them, they became fearful. Beacause the slaves had the potential to take over the whites, stricter laws were put into place to prevent anymore uprisings. Once the law was set slaves could not gather in groups, make money for themselves, or even grow their own food.
ReplyDeleteBacon's Rebellion reflected tention in the colonies because it showed how much anger the indentured servents had. They were frustrated at the way they were treated and how when they were freed, receved no land, like they should have. All the built up frustration caused them to snap.
ReplyDeleteAlso remembered due to this they reacted with unnecessary violence against the Native Indians to take land that belonged to them which is actually when the Rebellion took place.
DeleteThe Pueblo Revolt was when the conquered the Pueblos in the 17th century. The Indians were forced into slavery, their way of life was destroyed. It was an example of how the Pueblos were treated by the Spaniards.
ReplyDeleteThe years after the Pueblo Revolt were marked by drought.Famine, disease widespread among the Indian population, which made the Indian population decrease rapidly.
Don't forget about the fact that all of this started when two girls started to have illusions that they were seeing spirits. The town got suspicious so they did anything in the power to get "rid" of Satan. All of the girls called out three women's names and one confessed, and that is how the Salem witch trials started.
ReplyDeleteStono Rebellion was a rebellion of slaves against slave owners. Not only did the event show tremendous tension in the colonies but its cause also contibute to all tension that colonies had over them.In 1740 the Negro Act was passed in response to the Rebellion. Most of it was a prohibition on importing slaves directly from Africa. The Negro act also strictly restricted lives of south Carolina's slaves.Group of slaves were no longer able to assemble on their own, nor could a group grow their own food, learn to read or more less work for money.
ReplyDeleteAll this was very accurate. Also, legislature required a ratio of one white to ten blacks on any plantation to keep control and went even further to compensate the slaves by starting a school to teach Christian Doctrine.
DeleteThe Salem witchcraft trails reflected tensions in colonial society because it was mainly the poor who were accusing the rich of witchcraft. This caused a rift between the wealthy elite and the poor working class. The trials also dealt with religion. The puritans were afraid of the unknown and suspected that anyone who didn't practice their religion might be practicing witchcraft instead. This reflected the growing tension between extreme traditional puritans and the younger generation of puritans that were a part of the half way covenant.
ReplyDeleteVery true. The younger generation of Puritans might have been more aware of the unknown whereas the more traditional puritans were very closed minded. The traditional puritans were focused on their own religious ways and didn't want anything from the outside to mess with it.
DeleteIn this situations the puritans weren't really scared of the unknown, they just didn't want the damned as their neighbor. They did want evil contaminating their world of perfect
DeleteThe bacons rebellion of 1676 caused tension between the poor white servants working to grow crops, and the Indians. They both wanted the land to grow their crops to make money. The servants worked hard because they thought that if they worked hard enough, they would eventually make it to be wealthy but that wasn't the case. This made them very angry. Nathanial Bacon began the the rebellion and soon the colonies started to depend on black slaves, they seen that they would work for free.
ReplyDeleteHow did this reflect the tensions? Bacon's rebellion did not reflect the tension between the indentured servants and the Native Americans. There was tension between the indentured servants and their masters.
DeleteAcctually the Indentured Servants were angry at thefact of that when they were free, they received no land, thus causing them to rebel against the mayir because he was friendly towards the indians and not making them move for land like the servants wanted.
DeleteIn Bacons rebellion, many indentured servants were furious at the lack of land and opportunities for economic growth. The new slaves were free labor and took away these paid servants only source of income. This was much like the colonial tension between the immigrants non religious and the puritains. With the change this caused an upset in the economic system as the non puritains immigrants caused an upset in the established government theocracy.
ReplyDeletewell, the indetured slaves only mostly suffered from lack of land and lack of economic growth. They didn't really feel the slap to the face from free slaves until it became more popular to have black slaves because they were free(salary).
DeleteThe Stono Rebellion (given that name because it occurred near that river) caused tension in South Carolina between the slaves and their owners. The slaves, led by their leader Jemmy, began an armed march gathering along various other followers killing multiple whites. They were soon stopped by the S. Carolina militia. Because of their acts, the Negro Act of 1740 was passed, not only limiting much of the slaves' freedom, but also repercussions placed with harsh treatment of slaves.
ReplyDeleteBacon's Rebellion and the Pueblo Revolt both reflected the tensions that colonial society had. They both were cause upon the difficulty of getting along between white settlers and Native Indians. However unlike the the Pueblo Revolt , the tensions that caused the Bacon's rebellion to happen were much different and deeper than Indian colonist conflict. Both Bacon Rebellion and Pueblo revolt were initiated by trying to find safety and a way of life as both cultures , White Settlers and Native Americans came together to live on the same land. In Bacon's Rebellion , White settlers were trying to settle in land that was already taken by Native Americans , and that brought up troubles . The White settlers felt threatened by the Natives and responded with unecessarily violence.Natives felt the tension as Settlers try to change their way of life. Same happened with the Pueblo Indians in now present day New Mexico , who felt tormented as the Spanish try to impose an unfamiliar , Christian life on the Indians. Both groups felt tension as a result of Native Americans and White Settlers interaction , with most of the time resulting into useless rebellions and cruel violence.
ReplyDeleteThe Salem Witch Trials had different types of colonial tension. As others have stated, the tension involving the Puritans or farmers were both good examples. Another way tension was shown between males and females. Any women that showed any sign of being independent could have been accused of doing witchcraft. Being independent could have symbolized witchcraft because it was believed that witchcraft could make one powerful. It came down to the fear of having women overpowering the rest in these colonies, since men believed that the women should serve them and be lower than them.
ReplyDeleteThe pueblo revolt had a big impact on the colonial society because it destroyed all of Christian objects and churches. The pueblo revolt led to a humiliating set back in the expansion of the Spanish empire.
ReplyDeleteThis is correct, however more could of been added such as the relationship between the Native Americans, the Europeans, even the Pueblo Indians.
DeleteBacon's rebellion was a reason for tensions between them and the Indians. Nathaniel Bacon was upset from not gaining land after paying his dues. This led Bacon to lead a rebellion to acquire the land they thought they deserved. Unfortunately, they decided to slaughter and kill Indians in order to obtain their lands. This was unfortunate because they were already at peace with the Indians.
ReplyDeleteEconomic problems, such as declining tobacco prices, growing commercial competition from Maryland and the Carolinas, an increasingly restricted English market, and the rising prices from English manufactured goods (mercantilism) caused problems for the Virginians and it also attributed to Bacon's Rebellion. Another cause of Bacon's Rebellion that caused tensions in the colonies' society was the fact that the regular traders, some of whom had been trading independently with the local Indians for generations, were no longer allowed to trade individually. They also wanted land, therefore they started the Bacon's Rebellion.
ReplyDeleteStono's rebellion was the largest slave uprising. 20 slaves broke into a store (hutcheson store) and stole all the guns and gun powder. Then they headed south and when they hit south carolina they engaged in a battle. many of them were killed and rest were kept as slaves. Later after the slave codes got even more strict and they were enforced to the max. theis created even more tension with slaves with battles later on in history.
ReplyDeleteIn bacon's rebellion (1676) indentured slaves worked for many years and once they earned their freedom. They would have nowhere to go because all the land was taken up. The only land available was the land occupied by the native americans. The indentured slaves burned the capital, and kicked of the governer. After bacon's rebellion many landowners were tense because they were afraid of another revolt from the indentured slave which ultimately made many landowner switch to black slaves.
ReplyDeleteThe Salem Witchcraft Trials reflected colonial tensions in colonial society by showing the tension between the lower classes and the wealthy. The upper classes were becoming very superstitious because they believed the Devil was sending witches to do them harm. They immediately started to point fingers at the poor women, and wanted them executed. It also showed how the citizens were starting to go back to their religious beliefs, because they believed the Devil was around them, and they needed God by their side.
ReplyDeleteI thought they weren't poor women they were very wealthy women ,in familes that were involved with Salem's mercantalism.
DeleteThe most infamous trials were done by the Court of Oyer and Terminer in 1692 in Salem Town.
DeleteThe Pueblo Revolt relfected tensions between the Native Americans and European settlers. The Europeans tried to chanfe the Native American's way of life, which made the Native Americans feel threatened. The Europeans enslaved the Pueblo Indians, and tried to change them. The tension between them made the Pueblo Indians revolt against the Europeans.
ReplyDeleteBacon's Rebellion in 1676 an uprising in which the former indetured servants went against the wealthy plantation owners. The cause for was that the servants were to only work for a number of years and then be freed, but their owners would extend the years if they did something that was so insignificant. Also the indentured servants were promised land when they were freed but that wouldn't be possible because the wealthy men were taking it all. Due to this tension between the servants and the owners increased and the rebellion came to be. After the uprising the owners didn't want any more problems with the servants so they looked towards Africa, and its there where slavery started coming into America.
ReplyDeleteBacon's rebellion was based on class tensions. Nathaniel Bacon and other poorer farmers wanted the government to open up colonial expansion, but the government wouldn't do it. Presumably, expansion would have help the farmers acquire more land, and pay off the debts they owed. The governors, being wealthy aristocrats, were against allowing expansion at the time.
ReplyDeleteAlso don't forget to mention that Bacon's rebellion came in response to conflicts over frontier Indian policies between settlers and the colonial government and how land was given to Indians instead of settlers.
DeleteBacon's Rebellion definately reflected tension between the colonial society because it showed the the colonist weren't giving what they promised. Indentured servants were furious because they worked their contract off and in returned they weren't getting their promised land. They showed their anger by gathering with other indentured servants who were being lied to and stared attacking the indians because they had land that the indentured servants wanted. The rebellion resulted in farm owner using slaves instdead of indentured servants because they worked for life and would not rebel.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Also, don't forget the tension arose because of these different races. The clash between white settlers and native indians.
DeleteThe pueblo revolt of 1680 was an uprising of indians against the spanish settler in Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. One of the major conflics was that the spansh prihibted them many things such as traditional dances and religion. This caused the deth of many settlers and the rest were driven out of the province.
ReplyDeleteThe terrible belief in witchcraft accompanied the New England settlers, and they adopted English laws against it. For a long time it was simply an undemonstrative belief. However, Malice, rapacity, and revenge often impelled persons to accuse others who were innocent; and when some statement of the accused would move the court and audience in favor of the prisoner, the accuser would solemnly declare that he saw the devil standing beside his victim whispering his touching words in his or her ear. And the absurd statement would be believed by the judges on the bench.
ReplyDeleteSalem Witchcraft trials (1692)
The Salem witch trails reflected the alarm that went through the colonies as more than hundreds of people were being accused of witch craft. This shows how religious the puritans are, and how far they are willing to go to protect their "Perfect" society from any evils or abnormalities. It started off with an accusation by two young teenage girls blaming their strange doings on other people. This came as a surprise because the community was fooled that there was no evil amongst them. Since they ran a theocracy, and everything devil related was a crime, some of those whom were accused of witch craft were executed.
ReplyDeleteThe Stono Rebellion happened due to the slaves being tired of getting used for their cheap labor. They decided to gain their freedom. Afterwards, whites were killed which not only angered the Carolinians, but making them as well as the government afraid. Thats in then when they become more stict towards the slaves. They began to really enforce the slave code, limiting the privilages for the slaves which is where the Negro Act in 1740 came in. Examples would be like no longer being able to grow their own food, gather in groups, make their own money, or even have an education for themselves. Although some of these actions were already enforced, this grew even more tension.
ReplyDeleteBacon's rebellion was the effect of developing stress resulting from white settlers and Native Indians clashing. The tension that caused Bacon's Rebellion go much deeper than Indian/Colonist conflict. It was ignited by the mounting apprehension by preserving safety and a way of life as white settlers and Native Americans come together on the same land. The clash of the 2 races cause the uneasy apprehension. Bacon's Rebellion was fueled by the strain between the most elite Americans. All started because of uneasiness about Indian situation but ended as a full war with the elites. It was this end that reflects the growing tensions between the elite and the common people of American colonial society.
