President
Lincoln wanted the nation to follow his Ten Percent Plan after the Civil
War. In his opinion, far too many lives
were lost and far too much bitterness was engendered. The following is from SparkNotes:
“Lincoln’s
blueprint for Reconstruction included the Ten-Percent Plan, which
specified that a southern state could be readmitted into the Union once 10 percent of its voters (from the voter
rolls for the election of 1860)
swore an oath of allegiance to the Union. Voters could then elect
delegates to draft revised state constitutions and establish new state
governments. All southerners except for high-ranking Confederate army officers
and government officials would be granted a full pardon. Lincoln guaranteed
southerners that he would protect their private property, though not their
slaves. Most moderate Republicans in Congress supported the president’s
proposal for Reconstruction because they wanted to bring a quick end to the
war.
In many
ways, the Ten-Percent Plan was more of a political maneuver than a plan for
Reconstruction. Lincoln wanted to end the war quickly. He feared that a
protracted war would lose public support and that the North and South would
never be reunited if the fighting did not stop quickly. His fears were
justified: by late 1863, a large
number of Democrats were clamoring for a truce and peaceful resolution.
Lincoln’s Ten-Percent Plan was thus lenient—an attempt to entice the South to
surrender.
President
Lincoln seemed to favor self-Reconstruction by the states with little
assistance from Washington. To appeal to poorer whites, he offered to pardon
all Confederates; to appeal to former plantation owners and southern
aristocrats, he pledged to protect private property. Unlike Radical
Republicans in Congress, Lincoln did not want to punish southerners or
reorganize southern society. His actions indicate that he wanted Reconstruction
to be a short process in which secessionist states could draft new
constitutions as swiftly as possible so that the United States could exist as
it had before. But historians can only speculate that Lincoln desired a swift
reunification, for his assassination in 1865
cut his plans for Reconstruction short.”
But what of the freedmen? The first African Americans to serve in the United States Congress were Republicans during the Reconstruction Era. On February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate, becoming also the first black member of the Congress.
Blacks were a majority of the population in many congressional districts across the South. In 1870, Joseph Rainey of South Carolina was elected to the US House of Representatives, becoming the first directly elected black member of Congress. Freedmen were elected to national office also from AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, and VA.
All of these Reconstruction Era black senators and representatives were members of the Republican Party. The Republicans represented the party of Abraham Lincoln and of emancipation. The Southern Democrats represented the party of planters, slavery and secession.
But from 1868, southern elections were accompanied by increasing violence, especially in Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolinas. In the mid-1870s, groups such as the White League and Red Shirts worked openly to turn Republicans out of office and intimidate blacks from voting. This followed on the earlier years of secret vigilante action by the KKK against freedmen and allied whites.
Many historians
believe the Reconstruction was a “glorious failure”. What was the Reconstruction supposed to do
for the South, for the newly freed African Americans, and for society? While African Americans initially made rapid
gains, by the end of the Reconstruction, northerners were tired of the Reconstruction
and its many “issues”, and African Americans largely lived in fear of white
reprisal should they choose to exercise their constitutional right to
vote. No more African Americans would
serve in Congress until 1928!!
Prompt: Was
the Reconstruction a success OR a failure? Consider the intent of the Reconstruction and
what it accomplished (or failed to accomplish).
Be sure to support your opinion WITH FACTS. As always, DO NOT repeat what has been said!

Like many historians believe the Reconstruction was a “glorious failure”.Which was true because of various deals being illegal/schemes and backstabbing which caused a lot of controversey. Also the "Forgettable Presidents" which include Grant and Hayes which caused huge problems like the Depression of 1873.Therfore,the Reconstruction was failure because even after the reconstruction there was more trouble in the like the Jim Crow laws, tarrifs, and more depression ect.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree. The reconstruction did lead to many more problems. Abolishing slavery only led the rebellion of many racist people like the kkk and led to the black codes keeping newly freed African Americans in fear of voting, holding office.ect. The union and confederacy had many differences and although the reconstruction was set up to solve these differences it lacked firmness.
DeleteI agree because black schools, to help educate them, were under funded and many southern states didn't put any money aside for the school, and the "40 acres and a mule" turned out to be false
DeleteSo, considered the affects instead of what it was supposed to do. Like unite the country and ease the transition from owning people to having them as equals.
DeleteI agree with Iban's opinion about the Reconstruction Era and how it was a "glorious failure". I also believe there certainly was a significant amount of "backstabbing". Personally, one instance I believe to be considered "backstabbing" is when Northerners went to the South during the Reconstruction Era to make a profit, even after some of the Northerners themselves were the ones who caused those damages. These people were known as "carpetbaggers".
DeleteLIke many historians and Iban I fully agree that the Reconstruction was a failure. Was it not set up to join the union and the confederacy yet it left many new freeman in fear of getting attacked by those who opposed the abolition of slavery. Instead of uniting the south and showing African Americans that they could now live as citizens southerners found their way around it by issuing black codes. Like Iban stated the reconstruction led to much backstabbing especially in the south. The KKK is just another example of backstabbing the law.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with your failure of the reconstruction and the fact of the black codes. Also dealing with the Black American's was them getting hit hard by the depression, losing 7 million in their savings accounts.
DeleteMany historians....and Iban look at the failures of the reconstruction,But the reconstruction had its successes as well.
Deletei believe it was set-up to join the union and confederacy, accept the fact that the was more harm in result for the reconstruction than good to the country.
DeleteI disagree although the reconstruction had bad things in the long run there was good outcomes and it did reunite the south and the north.
DeleteBasically the Reconstruction was a failure. Politically, the government did convince southern states to rejoin the Union in a fairly simple process. They also managed to pass the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment. Past that, not much went well. Also the Freedmens Bureau was underfunded and cut short. The Black Codes still left African Americans unprotected and worked for whites involuntarily again.Instead of actually reconstructing it actually was worse off than how it started.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction area was not only about failures. This was about successes as well.Like a somewhat better education and union.
DeleteThe Freedmen's Bureau also left a vast majority of free slaves uneducated and still in the South. There was no land reform, meaning slaves were forced into a sharecropping system and did not own their own farms, which might have made them more independent, equal and successful.
DeleteI agree although the 13,14 and 15 amendment benefit the AA by giving them a period where they could vote , many opponents to this progress soon began to rallied against these freedoms and responded with violent attacks to AA.
DeleteThe two main purposes of Reconstruction were to reunite the polarized nation and grant freedmen their Constitutional and legal rights. The Reconstruction Era did successfully unite the North and the South into one nation once again, but its people, however, where anything but united. Segregation was an outcome from the Reconstruction period, for the unification of the North and the South brought upon the nation an increase in violence and racism aimed towards blacks. The Jim Crow laws, black codes, and the Ku Klux Klan all contributed to the increase in violence and racism towards blacks. Reconstruction did succeed in uniting the nation geographically, but not politically and socially. Blacks were still not treated as equals and many were still denied their rights even after the ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. Therefore, Reconstruction was a failure to rebuild the South.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you edgar. The blacks were still being treated unequally even after those three amendments were passed. Black codes made a huge increase in descrimination against freed and former slaves.
DeleteThe recnstruction was in my point of view both a failure and a success. It was a failure because it led to economical corruption upon Taxes. Some successes were that the union got back together leading to be one. This in some ways led to a better education.
ReplyDeleteAs being a success the reconstruction era also gave African Americans new rights and they continued to fight. The North and South reunited at the end as Lincoln planned.
DeleteI agree with you, Marlon. I really couldn't decide between the two. I didn't want to be wishy-washy about the topic. But I thought it didn't have better education, because there were tons of African-Americans that were uneducated at the time.
Deleteyeah I agree with you Marlon it was both a failure and a success. Like yeah the reconstruction was good because the government made factories but for the ones that were slaves and did not know how to work in the factories it proved that it was a failure and a success.
DeleteI agree with you that it was both a success and a failure. Other successes that were part of the reconstruction were that slaves were free and the fifteenth amendment was soon ratified. Other failures were that it led to a depression in 1873.
DeleteIn my opinion there was succeses but the failure overrided them : like the formation of KKK and the black codes.
DeleteMany historians believe the Reconstruction was a “glorious failure”. I agree it was a failure. The "glorious" part about the Reconstruction was that it did lead to "Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate, becoming also the first black member of the Congress." and much more after. With this success of Reconstruction the violence increased and whites were tired of reconstruction which further lead to no more african americans in the goverment. Then further along came more problems in the goverment with Hayes becoming president because of electorals votes and not popular vote and compromise of 1877 also known as "the great betrayal."
ReplyDeleteI fell Reconstuction was a success as well as a failure because its main purpose (Ten Percent Plan) was to unite the nation once more.
DeleteThe reconstruction was a success. The ten percent plan kept the united states together and now blacks had a political standpoint. That is a success to me.
DeleteReconstruction was just that, it was "putting back the pieces". It was the point where America attempted to become a full running country again. I believe that the Reconstruction was both a success and failure. The Reconstruction succeeded because the African Americans were free, but it failed because they were still much poorer than whites, and they were not able to vote. Another Failure was that Lincoln was assassinated before they could put the plan to the test. Reconstruction wasn't a total success but it was a step towards the right direction. Laws that were set up weren't followed strictly. Laws were created to protect African Americans. They were now formal citizens and had the right to vote.
ReplyDeleteI think the reconstruction was mostly a failure because the slaves were freed before it was created. It's main purpose was to brink the north and the south back together, which it did politically but not socially.
Deletei agree with angel, it was more of a failure because more bad things came from it rather than good things. Although some black people got to be some representatives, this did not happen in a long time. but they did get the right to vote, eventually...
DeleteThe Reconstruction was a success. Lincolns plan was to reunite the North and South therefor he came up with a plan where he could make both happy. All of his intentions were to unite the North and South. Yes there was an increase in violence between the north and south but because of this there were Black Representatives for the first time in congress. African Americans had lots of gains because of the reconstruction era. Even though Northerners were angered this was a new step into equality and unity. By the end of the Reconstruction Blacks were still free, and Southern States reunited with the Union.
ReplyDeleteIn the long run it was a success, but what about everything that camalong the way such as violence? .t wasn't like African Americans were given rights right away like some would like. But nothing good ever happens w/o any bad along the way.
DeleteI concur, if the 15th Amendment was not passed, African Americans would not be in Office. Reconstruction brought change to the nation because of the laws that went through and because of what people thought of the laws and rights.
DeleteIn my opinion the Reconstruction was a big failure which in fact actually led to great success. Lincoln wasn't able to carry out what he saw as Reconstruction due to his assassination.Instead the idea of it wasn't seen as beneficial at first. In time it would lead to Hiram Rhodes Revel's seating in congress, this however was a lengthy event. Before this the rights of slaves were being shunned even though the North had made offers for an easier solution. In time the benefits of Reconstruction were seen after the hardships placed before it.
ReplyDeleteAs Simon says the Reconstruction was a failure that led to great success, it is what most modern ideas face too. The effect of Abe Lincolns assassination would lead to many influences in others views on slavery. As a death would bring a change in others, the death of a president whose intent to change the law for the good, it would affect others in the most unbelievable way.
DeleteIn my point-of-view, reconstruction was indeed a failure. Yes, it granted African-Americans more civil liberties, but what good are those if African-Americans still were victimized by the KKK? It also didn't protect former slaves, because even Jim Crow laws were passed, and former slaves AND ALL African-Americans were discriminated against. It also put a damper on the economy.
ReplyDeleteThat may be true but if it wasn't for those hardships there really wouldn't have been such a strong push for equal rights among all the races.
DeleteI angree. Not only with the reconstruction being a failure but how people were still treating african americans bad.
DeleteI actually think that freed African Americans didn't even have civil liberties. It was still the same kind of treatment for them. It was more of a saying rather than showing
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteMany of my peers agree that the Reconstruction was a failure because of the violence increased towards the freed slaves. However the reconstruction had good accomplishments like education for many illiterate blacks, the amendments like the 14 15 and 16th,and the north and south to rejoin. Therefore i believe that the reconstruction had few accomplishments but they were very significant in the lives of African Americans.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kimberly. The Reconstruction may have not fixed all of the problems that were occurring between the south and the north or with the Freedman and the whites but it wad it did improve things between them.
DeleteI also agree with Kimberly, because not many people see the positive impact on the newly freed men, because of all the negative overshadowing. I mean 1870 and congress receives an African American member!
DeleteI feel that Reconstuction was a success and also a failure, it succeeded in bringing the union back together and swiftly ending the war, but was also a failure because it led to things like the black codes and the KKK and most importantly the Depression of 1873.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, but i believe it is more of a success than failure due to the fact that it brought the US together.
DeleteThe Reconstruction was a failure that ended up being a success. Lincoln wasn't able to carry out what he saw as Reconstruction. The reconstruction was a failure in that it began some of the worst organizations the US had seen. In time the benefits of Reconstruction were that it brought the US together.
DeleteIn my opinion the Reconstruction was a success because at the end slaves were still free and the South joined the Union again. There were laws passed to protect the Freedman and the reconstruction improved education.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the reconstruction was a success because the south united with the union again. The black got education in the prose of the reconstruction .
DeleteYes, but they were now being pushed to get an education. Which I feel is a step closer to equality.
DeleteTo me the Reconstruction was a Failure. It failed to help blacks economically. They did not get the "40 acres and a mule" that they hoped for and so they continued to be poor farm workers who pretty much had to work for the rich landowners. This was not much different from how things had been during slavery.
ReplyDeleteUnder General Sherman's Special Field Order No.15, land seized from the Confederates was to be redistributed among the new freedmen thus creating the saying 40 acres and a mule" but President Andrew Johnson recinded Sherman's order.
DeleteThe Reconstruction was somewhat of a success. Due to the fact that some African Americans did get high class seats in Congress such as Rhodes and Rainey. They gained some sort of respect. Most African Americans started from the bottom though because they were former slaves. The Reconstruction brought many issues to float to the top, but it did solve a few issues.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction i believed was a failure. Many attempts to kill freedman and harm them were going around. Although this was a time period to stop war and gain equal rights it did not thoroughly go through with it. Many newly free slaves were very scared, and this did not cause the nation to become united like they said it would.
ReplyDeleteTo add on to this, the freed slaves were also intimidated by the violence against them. The freed slaves were scared to even use their right to vote. All the negative feedback was like a step back from what was trying to be accomplished.
DeleteA lot of people have different opinions on the reconstruction but I disagree with historians & say it was a success. Yes even with their newly given right African Americans were still treated wrong by whites but the fact is such a change like this could not happen over night or in a decade. From the 1870's to the 1900's you would think there would be a drastic change within races but this took time. If all these different incidents were to never happen like the 15th amendment being ratified & African Americans being slowly admitted to Congress, equality would have been delayed. You must look at the big picture of what te main purpose of the reconstruction .
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you because yet African Americans did get treated wrong and slowly did get admitted into congress it all happened way to slow than Lincoln would have wanted.
DeleteHey there Minions! Be careful not to be wishy-washy. This prompt is asking you to pick one side--success or failure. I have deleted a few comments that did not make a decision or that did not ADD A FACT. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the Reconstruction was inteded to reunited the South and the North, and to build a society not based on slavery. Indeed, the Union was restored, Congress passed the 14th amendment which granted citizenship to freedmen, and the 15th amnedment allowed freedmen to vote. Furthermore, new Southern governments were directed mostly by Nothern Republicans, and blacks, this resulted in the creation of public education and social instituitions in the South. The fact that blacks were serving in Southern governments represented a huge step foward, though it would prove only a temporary victory. Unfortunatly, segregation and discrimination came into being, with racist oragnizations like the KKK who attacked and often murdered black and white Republican leaders, community activists, and teachers. Also, black codes restricted the freemen way of living, the Jim Crow Laws just discriminated and segregated the blacks, and unscrupulous landowners used the sharecropping system as means of keeping the poor freedmen in a state of near slavery and debt. Reconstruction in the end did reunite the nation but was never able to build a society in which the people would accept the freedmen as actually being free with n discrimination, so therefore the Reconstruction was a failure.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you %100. The reconstruction was not strong enough to fully end all the discriminating and poor treatment against the blacks. Many people such as the democrats, the white league, and the red shirts intimidated the freedmen.
DeleteI think the reconstruction was a failure. Even though the freedmen were free, laws such as the black codes were placed to keep them in their place, and the land given to them by the general was taken away and given back to the whites.
ReplyDeleteYes, Andres, I also think the Reconstruction was a failure however slavery was abolished, they were able to become citizens and then they were given the right to vote. 13, 14, and 15 Amendments
DeleteThe Reconstruction was a success, because it brought back unity with the opposing US states to rejoin the United States and blacks received their political rights. The African-American community received their 13, 14, and 15 amendments, which abolished slavery, gave them the right to become a citizen and then the right to vote.
ReplyDeleteEven though they had the Black Codes blacks had the choice to choose education or to stay with the owners. After the reconstruction blacks could be free even though they didn't know what to do with it . The 10 percent plan was a major part of the reconstruction because if 10 percent of the south population would unite with the union it will forgive them for rebellion against the union . The reconstruction was a success.
ReplyDeleteThe over purpose of the reconstruction was to give blacks the right to vote & equality between the north & south. W/o the reconstruction era then who's to say the civil rights movements would have happened regardless. Thanks to people like Lincoln, Johnson & Washington African american point of views were able to be understood by some whites. Therefore, it was all about timing & w/o this era what are the odds of the 13 14 & 15 amendments being ratified at the time they were?
ReplyDeleteI agree. If the Reconstruction were to have never happened then America would probably be the same before it. African Americans would probably never be equal, they'd never get a chance to vote and African Americans would probably never get the chance to get a good education which is now essential. This meaning we did take a step forward thanks to the Reconstruction.
DeleteTo me the Reconstruction seem to be a success while Lincoln WAS alive . His intentions to stop slavery were a huge step forward to reunite the US. The way he sought things should be done was what seem to be correct . He just wanted the US to be what once was , a Unite Nation. Blacks were allowed in Congress for the first time giving an example for many to aspire new opportunities. His 10 Percent Plan was a quick way to end the war . It might have seen as a "political maneuver" but he just wanted to prevent more violence from happening . Ironically after his assesination his plan for reconstruction turn out to be a failure after violence outbroke against African Americans with the creation of the KKK. Blacks were not allowed in congress and it took a gigantic step backward on the reform of slavery .
ReplyDeleteThe reconstructions goals for Abraham Lincoln was to reunite the North and South as it had been before. Lincoln wanted the states to oath and pledge to obey the laws towards slavery. Lincoln wasn't looking to punish the South. He wanted to end the war before things got worse between the South and North. In the end, it was all a bitter-sweet result. Not everything planned, went accordingly to the plan that was set. Therefore, I believe the Reconstruction was a failure. Lincoln helped push the Republicans laws and ideas of justice through. He wanted to offer each secessionist state their chance to rewrite the constitution. In the end though, the Reconstruction had the democrats enforcing their ways and idea to restructure the United States. Also, Lincoln was still rounded with the violence and negativity towards the freed slaves which didn't allow them to rise. Although amendments and other laws came into play to help the freed slaves, they weren't all used to the full potential due to the rest of society.
ReplyDeleteSome Africans Americans did reach their potential though, they started at the top rather than the bottom like the former slaves did. However, that later changed and African Americans weren't being hired to do what they had studied so hard for, so I agree with your statement.
DeleteLike everything else, the reconstruction had its ups and downs but ultimately it was a failure. Anti-colored groups were formed like the KKK to victimize the blacks. Shortly after, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and all directions to rebuild the South was declined.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reconstruction was a failure. The reconstruction was supposed to remake the south. It was supposed to make the transition from slavery easier for everyone. Right after slaves were freed, some gained high ranking government roles, but they soon felt the repercussions. The reconstruction did not help. Black codes were created to keep blacks in their place, the KKK rose, and tensions between the blacks and whites were deepened.
ReplyDeleteVery true Angel. Freed slaves did suffer discrimination from these black codes. Not only did tensions deepen between these two races, but some free men were killed by hate groups such as the KKK.
DeleteI agree with you because reconstruction seems as if it did more harm then good. Besides the 13,14, and 15 amendment blacks had nothing else.
DeleteIn my opinion, I think the Reconstruction was a success. Yes, as we all agreed on there was violence that came out of it but there were the good things as well which was its main purpose. The intentions of the Reconstruction overall seemed good. It was meant to rebuild and bring together the nation which it did. As a result, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed. This outlawed slavery and now allowed freedmen to be equal under the constitution. Freedmen also got the chance to vote and actually be apart of congress unlike before. Education was so improved which was one of the most important things considering not many African Americans got a good education.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction was bound to stir up problems only because people weren't used to such change but it did being the nation one step forward towards unity.
I agree on those successes, but the north was still taking advantage of the south, specifically the carpetbaggers (also known as the yankees) and even if new amendments were passed, it doesn't really mean many of these former slaves were not intimidated by the ones who opposed the abolition of slavery.
DeleteAna Mendoza
i agree with you! Yes, the passing of the 3 amendments regarding African Americans was a major change in American society but the reaction to it had created a big wound of racism across America. This wound would eventually lead to the Civil rights movement and today can still be seen all across the country.
DeleteNot only did it encourage unity but also gave new opportunities to make the economy better. By allowing the freed slaves to receive an education the nation had a greater chance to build itself up faster. The now freed, educated slaves could contribute towards our economy and government.
DeleteI believe the Reconstruction was a failure, yet since everyone thinks it is rather both a failure and success i think it is pure failure. Yes Lincoln did want the country to be united and become back into what it was but his ideas didn't quite become reality. When Johnson takes his place as president he tries to make Lincoln's plan into reality and it is a success at one part but in the end i don't think it came to help any of the African Americans but maybe some whites.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction was a failure. There was many good intentions, as for anything, but in the end, they ( US Government ) couldn't piece it together.
ReplyDeleteThey tried to make the ending of the war a quick and easy as possible, and it was working, but it was intended for only a short amount of time. The white people did not like the idea of blacks to be free, so they still treated them like trash. They have black codes and groups are formed for the basic agreement of hating the fact that blacks had rights.
Lincoln was assassinated and people could argue that he was shot for trying to execute the reconstruction and the 10 percent plan.
I believe the reconstruction was a failure. After president Lincolns assassination, the republican party were the only ones to push for it. If anything the reconstruction was counter-productive, for with every attempt at unity, a separate party would introduce another aspect to keep freemen from exercising their rights, such as Black codes and the KKK. This also held back the unity and civil reconstruction of the south.
ReplyDeleteSince these are past FRQ's and DBQ's I'm try my best to respond to them as such.
ReplyDeleteMany historians believe and will continue to believe that the Reconstruction was a "glorious failure". However I believe that it was a success because the main purpose of it was to reunite the states. Which it did, and it also was supposed to help the freedman easy in to their new lives/status in society, which it slowly did.
I believe the Reconstruction was a failure. One example can be seen in "The carpetbaggers." These were a group of northern people who basically manipulated former confederate states. After the south was defeated, it was left in terrible conditions which were "beneficial" for these carpetbaggers because it would be easier for them to take advantage of the south. Also, racial tensions were never eliminated. Former slaves were still considered "low".
ReplyDeleteAna Mendoza
I commend the Reconstruction for granting freed slaves very important rights. Unfortunately, the Reconstruction ultimately failed to reconstuct the devastaded Southern region after the Civil War. Even with the intention of improving the South's economy and making it more idustrialized, the South's people felt that they were being punished for seceding from the US. Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan did admit the South back to the Union, but the South still was left in bad shape. Even with the efforts from the Northern region, the Southern region lagged behind in educating its citizens and the economy was not improving as hoped. The majority of the population was not able to read and write, the people were still dirt poor, and freed slaves suffered racial discrimination and persecution.
ReplyDeleteAs majority of my classmates mentioned before me, i believe that the Reconstruction was a failure. The main goal of the act was to unite & reconstruct the south and truly end the war. After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the hatred for the south from the North increased, this may have lead to many radical republicans wanting the South to image the North and trying to pass bills that punished the seceded states such as the Wade-Davis bill. Back to my point, it was a failure because it failed to reach full equality for former slaves. Despite passing the 13th 14th & 15th amendment, many former slaves had to deal with the issue of racism especially with the KKK. Not to mention that many seceded states had black codes that limited the freedom of former slaves. Also many of the former slaves were left without land, leaving them with no other choice then to return to their former masters or jobless. Also the south were very resistant to change they demonstrated this by as mentioned before the KKK, the black codes, the Jim Crow laws, and the Mississippi plan of 1875.
ReplyDeletei believe that reconstruction was one step closer to what they really wanted.
DeleteReconstruction did not lead to much good. Politically, the government did convince southern states to rejoin the Union in a fairly simple process. They also managed to pass the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment. Past that, not much went well.
ReplyDeleteThe effort of Reconstruction was cut off after only 12 years, leaving the economy of the South still in ruins and its population largely in poverty.
The reconstruction, simular to the Freedmans Bareau was a failure in my eyes. The point of them freeing slaves was a good thing but the overall situation wasnt good. After giving land to the freed slaves and then tooken away from them it made the slaves life very difficult to start.
ReplyDeleteIn a way, I understand your point. Just take into account with their freedom, which was just hanging on by a thread, any strings attached were worth it, just to not be considered property anymore. Sure, it was difficult get started, but better that, than still work in the severe conditions as they were before for no profit. Some went back to attempt to work for a certain amount of years and get paid, but at least then, they received profit.
DeleteReconstruction was indeed a success. Although at the time it seemed like a total disaster and many people criticized Reconstruction or made it almost impossible, it led us to what we now know as America. Reconstruction helped develop and advance the role of the federal government in protecting citizens’ rights, and the achievability of economic and racial justice. It was also the effort for African Americans, who where aforetime enslaved, to obtain full freedom and claim their rights as citizens. Reconstruction was the start to adjusting all the problems and inequality.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but it would also be a fail because of the negative organizations like the KKK who would discriminate the blacks therefore making it difficult for the people to accept them.
DeleteI would have to agree with you Mariajose, Reconstruction was a success. During this time African AMericans were standing up to their rights and as a result they were now granted the right to recive full edducation just like any other American despite their race.
DeleteThe overall purpose of the Reconstruction was to, allow/reunite all the rebel states back into the Union and to allow freed African American slaves(Freedmen)to become a part of society/grant them their legal rights. Reconstruction succeeded in allowing Southern states back into the Union, therefore reuniting the United States. The Ten-Percent plan greatly advanced this process and it worked up until Lincoln's death. The Freedmen were still very much free by the end of Reconstruction and had their legal and political rights extended, and many of them were Republicans that were allowed to serve in Congress during the Reconstruction Era. Therefore, the Reconstruction was very successful in terms of the Unification of the United States and the political/legal advancement of the Freedmen.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the goal of the Reconstruction was to "unite" the north and the south, it did not function as well as Abraham Lincoln would have wanted as stated in his %10 plan. Therefor I believe that it was indeed a failure. Instead of becoming more united, many people gained even more hate and took more action, such as the KKK, and the impeachment of pres. Andrew Johnson. Also, both blacks and whites suffered due to loss of lands and lack of jobs. Blacks also did not get the full satisfaction of "freedom".
ReplyDeleteI agree it was a fail.the war just put them so far in debt it was impossible to reconstruct.
DeleteI agree that the Reconstruction did not go as planned because of all the difficulties faced during this time, and this can be proven when the Reconstruction was literally dropped.
DeleteThe Reconstructions goal was to be able to unite not only the union and confederacy but also unite the whites and the newly free slaves and give them opportunities to live an equal life. I do believe that the reconstruction was a success because even though some negative came out of it like the KKK, sharecropping and poverty, there was also some good that benefited the slaves, things like the Freedmans Bureau, the reunification of the union, education, and most commonly known Freedom. Newly freed slaves were now given opportunities to find education, find jobs, and also work their way up the social ladder and even though there were still loopholes that were abused by the whites, Freedom was a good beginning to a brighter future for african americans.
ReplyDeleteEven though this is a good post you could have added reasons for the reconstruction failure and the bad it brought. Things like the KKK, sharecropping, poverty and the black codes are all things that actually hurt the newly freed African Americans rather then help.
ReplyDeleteThe overall purpose of the Reconstructions was positive. However, The Reconstruction failed to reconstruct the south after the civil war. Southerners felt like they were being punished, in a way, for succeding from the US. The citizens in the south had such a poorly education and its economy still failed to improve. Some States had black codes which limited the freedom of former slaves and left them with no rights or lamd. Freed slaves still suffered racial descrimination and some even persecution making the Reconstruction a total failure.
ReplyDeletetheintrntions of the reconstruction were great. although it wasn't so successful. they south had just finished the civil war, with the planning to rebuild the south, the reconstruction failed because the war left them in debt, no jobs and without money how were they even to begin to rebuild.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction was a positive thing. It gave blacks more freedom and bring america together. the reconstruction period was when the 13 14 and 15 amendments were made for enfranchising black rights
ReplyDeleteI think it had positive intent, but the southern black codes and organizations (kkk) had poured alot of negative over the positive.
DeleteI agree that it was a positive thing. Free slaves were allowed to hold office and serve on juries. Which was something unheard of before the Reconstruction .It wasn't one gigantic improvement that happened over night, it was a small step to something bigger.
DeleteThe reconstruction had positive intent finished, however, its effects were negative rather than the latter. With the civil war just finished the nation was still split. With "Reconstructing" the south, the southerners didnt know who to trust. The south retaliated even further by issuing black codes and limiting slave freedom. This brought forth racial turmoil, for ex the kkk etc, as well as government corruption.
ReplyDeleteThe Reconstruction was the system used after the Civil War in the South in order to help bring the South back up from the war. However, Reconstruction was a failure because groups like the KKK, the Jim Crow Laws, and the Black Codes prevented African Americans from becoming as equal as the Whites. The Reconstruction was a plan to rebuild the South, but it only went downhill.
ReplyDeleteI agree that though the Reconstruction was supposed to help the South it actually created a negative effect on African Americans rights. Also there was the depression of 1873 which many blamed on the president in office.
DeleteI believe there was great successes that came out of the Reconstruction. One of the successful things that came out of the Reconstruction was the Enforcement Act of 1870. The Enforcement Act of 1870 allowed protection for African Americans to hold office , serve on juries, and vote. I believe that the act showed the improvement that came out of the Reconstruction. It shows that congress was taking a big step in trying to improve the conditions for African Americans.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Antonia. The Reconstruction did have their successes and the Enforcement Act of 1870 did make a positively changing effect. Also, the Enforcement Act "banned the use of terror force or bribery to prevent people from voting because of their race." This reinforced the thirteenth amendment and this amendment gave slaves their freedom.
DeleteThe Reconstruction was not a total failure. In succeeded in terms of unifying the U.S and advancing the political/legal rights of the Freedmen. Ex. Many of Freedmen were Republicans that were allowed to serve in congress during the Reconstruction Era.
ReplyDeleteMany people believe the Reconstruction was a failure. I would have to disagree. The main goals of the Reconstruction was to bring the rebel states back into the Union and help the freedmen become a part of society. These two goals were eventually accomplished even though it didn't go as smoothly as possible. There were lots of problems evolved from the Reconstruction, but it was eventually a success. Freedom, expansion of the south and north's economy, education, etc. These three of many successes made a huge difference. Technically the whole Reconstruction era was a success overall and not a failure.
ReplyDeleteSuccess overall can be attributed to long term planning which the reconstruction plan was not. It was meant to go quickly. The success is attributed to other governments leader and at a different time. African Americans were not fully integrated into society until the civil rights movement in the early 1960's.
DeleteNo plan can be successfully completed unless it is sufficiently enforced. The Reconstruction Plan of Lincoln was intended to end the civil war by quickly uniting the Confederate states to the Northern states. It did so buy forcing upon them the acceptance that black individuals are NOT property and that with the 13, 14, 15 amendments they were to be integrated into society as rightful citizens. Unfortunately, freedmen were unable to vote from fear or because there were black codes, Jim Crow laws and other restrictions placed on their rights. A constant fear rested in the black hearts toward white individuals because of organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. The government was not doing enough to enforce the protection of African Americans and for the reason the Reconstruction plan was a failure. These individuals were a part of the newly unified nation and yet they were continually ill-represented.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Celia. The African Americans were "free" but were they actually free. they didnt obtain the rights that a white citizen had
DeleteThe concept of the Reconstruction era was a good one but because of the rise of groups like the Ku Klux Klan advancing in the equal rights part of the nation could not continue. It was not until later when the first African American was elected into Congress to show that the race was advancing in the nation.
ReplyDeleteThe reconstruction era was a success due to bring in social, economic, and political standing of Africans Americans. During this time period Education of African Americans in the South increased. They were now being allowed to recive an education despite their race. Now that they were able to get an education their generations to come will be successful. We can see that Booker T. doc. rose this as well.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Reconstruction was a complete failure because although African Americans were now being given more and better rights and equality, many bad things were coming out of it as well. The assasination of Lincoln, the birth of the KKK, disputes between the Reconstruction just led to more violence and more problems for the people who were already tired of them. Although everything was eventually fixed the Reconstruction was still a huge failure that just brought out more problems then answers.
ReplyDeleteThe new "freed slaves" also had to deal with Jim Crow laws and Black codes so they couldnt really have equal rights like the whites did. They still faced disadvantages which the Reconstruction didnt really fix.
ReplyDeleteI belive that the recontruction act was a successs. Blacks recieed many political rights and the 14,15,and 16th amendment promoted civil rights. "On February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate" before the civil war and reconsruction this would of never have been possible. Enforcement Act of 1870 banned the use of terror, force, or briebery to prevent people from voting because of their race reinforced the Thirteenth Ammendement which gave slaves freedom. The reconstruction was a success.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you because eventhough the blacks were starting to gain high positions the racism did not stop and they were still seen as a nuisance to the white people.
DeleteThe reconstruction in my opinion was not a total success. Although the African Americans were noted as free they did not obtain the rights everyone else in the nation had.(other than women) Abe lincoln tried his hardest to bring forth his true plan and intentions. He faught up until he was assasinated in 1865. therefore a true success cannot be given to the reconstruction era
ReplyDeleteAs many believe that the reconstruction was a failure due to all the cover-ups and many of the government organizations that we didn't know about at the time, but in reality the reconstruction was supposed to give the African-American Race their American Rights and that is what happened. The 13th, 14th, and the 15th amendments were passed and they had their political rights. As people only see the bad in the times that they had it was hard to see what the good in the Reconstruction brought.
ReplyDeleteReconstruction it self was an idea that would of helped the South rebuilt and create more opportunities with African Americans. Yet there were setbacks to the rights of African Americans such as the Jim Crow laws and the Ku KLux Klan. While attempting to improve the effects of the war in the South there were many negative effects on the South due to Reconstruction. Therefore the Reconstruction was a failure to the idea that it would improve upon the negative effects that effected the Union.
ReplyDeleteeven though many people believe that the reconstruction was not successful i believe that the reconstruction was effective the African Americans received rights that would help them.
ReplyDeleteThe Reconstruction was successful in providing education. Education was provided to everyone and was especially pushed in the South.
ReplyDeleteI also think the reconstruction was successful but in what ways did the United States rebuild education. i would include something like they helped establish some of the first state-funded public school systems in the south. They built new hospitals, prisons, and orphanages and passes laws prohibiting discrimination against African Americans.
Deletei Agree with the both of you, Education was very very important, but we still have to look at that fact that african americans were still treated unfair. :(
DeleteReconstruction really didn't fix anything there were still laws that were against slaves. Like the Jim crow laws and the black codes, slaves were still treated unfairly even though it was said they weren't.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reconstruction was a failure due to the fact of the Ten Percent plan and president Lincoln's objective to end the war soon. He established the plan only as a political notice to the world so the north and south would be united again. It hardly had an affect on rebuilding and restablishing the nation as whole.
ReplyDeleteThe main goal of Reconstruction was to bring the rebel states back into the Union, and to help the freedmen become a part of society. Although there was a lot of abuse, and Reconstruction didn't go as smoothly as it was intended to be, these two goals were acheived as much as was possible. So, Reconstruction in my opinion would have to be considered a success.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Reconstruction, a lack of political focus on the effort failed to solve the sectional wounds, and the elimination of the freed slaves' newly gained civil liberties failed to bring peace and bring rest to rascism. This is why I think the Reconstruction failed.
