Greetings, Minions!
Let's be very careful to credit sources this time. Several of you were very lax in using Internet or class sources word for word and not including quotation marks or citing your source. When you quote three or more words in a row without giving the author credit, this is plagiarism. Again, read it, think about it, and put it in your own words. Make a connection of your own.
The Progressives, their causes, and their reforms, are a common College Board topic. Let's stick with it a bit longer. This time, delve in a little deeper. Have you noticed any other interesting or odd connections to earlier time periods? For instance, do you see similariites in William Bradford's desire to build a shining "city on a hill" with the Progressive's crusading sense of moral righteousness?
Prompt: Tell your peers what was the Progressives' greatest success--and why, and their biggest failure--and why. Be sure to support your opinion with FACT and do not repeat what has been said.
One of the greatest successes of the Progressives was that working conditions for women were improved, and one failure was trying to limit the rights of new immigrants which was later labeled unconstitutional.
ReplyDeleteThe rights of women definitely improved during the Progressive era, especially when the 19th amendment was ratified.
DeleteLimiting the rights for immigrant may be a threat to workforce.
DeleteYou forgot to explain why it was a success or failure but I will help you! Working conditions were improved because of the labor unions along with the suffrage movement that formed and fought for women rights. There was a limitation of rights against immigrants and there still was no equality given to them. They needed the low waged workers.
DeleteNot only for women but for all factory workers as well.
DeleteAlso child labor was removed from all workforces which was benefiting for all families.
DeleteStill women were not paid as much as men even with their conditions improved.
DeleteAs with all attempts to make society perfect, the extreme reform movements of the progressives are strongly motivated yet incapable of improving all aspects of society. The focus of the reformers are spread so thin that it is almost ineffective. For instance, the successes found in the Amendments to the Constitution resulting in women's suffrage allowed for that long wished dream for women's having a voice, but what happened to the African Americans? Reforms are spread out in our Nation's history as a result of the nation's inability to do it all. The African Americans would have to wait for another age of reform in the Civil Right's movement. The Progressives moved further away from Capitalists' ease in gaining control of government, but instead of finding a balance, they seemed to be moving from one extreme to another, some Americans even came close to embracing a form of Socialism. "A city on hill" cannot become a truth as a "nation" on a hill. Some things are just unlikely to succeed on a large scale. The same inclinations to seek moral improvement, but too many voices and opinions create struggles to see it through. The failures of progressives was seeking large steps in everything as opposed to baby steps in all places.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressives had many successes, one of the biggest being the educational reform. Educational historian Lawrence Cremin described the educational reform as an integral part of the Progressive era, which attempted to "improve the lives of individuals." Many schools erupted during this time, and after a few years, half of the population had a high school diploma. A big failure during this time period was the failure to address the problems of minorities, such as the blacks and native americans.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree. Due to the progressive movement of education everyone was to receive and education and this would help the nation prosper as a whole. I think during this time Natives were treated very badly. Maybe even more than blacks. People of this time acted as if these natives weren't present and their land and resources were just free for the taking.
DeleteA success of the Progressives were the improvements on child labor laws. It was such a success because child labor began to prominently decrease as more labor and reform movements grew and the general standards in labor began to improve. The National Child Labor Committee was originated in 1904. A failure was the attempt of prohibition of alcohol. It was nationally banned, not to be able to solicit, nor transported anywhere. The prohibition ceased with the ratification of the twenty first amendment.
ReplyDeleteChildren below the age of 16 were not allow to work so that was an improvement. That is one of the laws that we still carry on until this day.
DeleteProhibition was not a success because it resulted in organized crime. Especially in Chicago, this would result in all types corrupt organizations.
DeleteProgressivism was a political movement that attempted to correct the problems that were brought along by the modernization of America. Additionally, Progressivism also attempted to achieve equality among all people and improve working standards in factories. Of all their endeavors to reform politics, Progressives' greatest success was exposing and raising awareness of corruption in business and government facilities. Some businesses and factories allowed the continuation of unsafe practices in the production of goods, like the unhealthy processing and packaging of food and medications. The government, too, was corrupted by the unjust election of several U.S. Senators. One of the greatest failures of the Progressive Era was Prohibition. Firstly, Prohibition was enacted on January 17, 1920, only later to be repealed in 1933. The prohibition on alcohol actually caused an increase in criminal activity by tempting people to secretly producing their own alcohol.
ReplyDeleteThe criminal activity was also that led to major mafia groups.
DeleteThe fact is that people were lead to believe that during this time, it was a time of great advancements, but in all reality things just kept getting worst at they progressed on wards.
DeleteA success of this era was The Interstate Commerce Act (1887)which helped investors throughout the nation economically and a failure that was Corrupt Politicians. With corrupt politicians our economy and our society would go down.
ReplyDeleteThose who corrupted caused issues not only with money but also with work conditions as well.
DeleteAlso don't forget aboutt the political machines which were an organization of govt. Officials who ran govt. Of a citt mainly through corruption.
DeleteThe Interstate Commerce act was designed to address the issues of railroad abuse and discrimination by requiring that shipping rates be reasonable and just, rates had to be published, secret rebates were outlawed, and price discrimination against small markets was made illegal.
DeleteDuring the Progressives era there was a good amount of new available jobs that almost anyone could get. Many immigrants came and this created many problems with sanitation (hard access to clean water) and overcrowding. This created even bigger problems with immigration, urbanization and industrialization. Many kids were given jobs because they could be paid less and there was really no enforce law saying they could not work. These kids were put in horrible working conditions that later were strike against. Social workers later fought for child labor, an improvement on working conditions, better wages and education since many of these kids were not provided an education since they worked. This created labor unions that strike for these rights (legislation). Soon there were better working conditions and child labor was abolished being the Progressives' greatest success. Its failure was how after many reforms immigrants as well as African Americans still inequality.
ReplyDeleteAn improvement of the Progressive reform would have to be the labor laws. They attempted to better the conditions in which the workers had to work in order to improve their health and productivity. A failure would have to be Roosevelt's First New Deal. The First New Deal did not accomplish what it was supposed to. With the creation of it there were still unemployment, wages were low and some of its alphabetical agencies were seen as unconstitutional.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Labor laws changed for minors and conditions bettered.
DeleteThe First New Deal was not actually during the Progressive Era and the leader of the Progressive Era was President Theodore Roosevelt. Also, the First New Deal was put in by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Therefore, the First New Deal could not be a failure of the Progressive Era, they were related but different topics.
DeleteI agree with you, regulations were put in the health conditions after Roosevelt read "The Jungle" and finding out that the conditions in the book were indeed true.
Deletei agree the child labor laws did improve but was it really improved or just covered up with a pay increase or cleaner facilities?
DeleteThe progressive movement had a very successful movement in the making the food healthy and passing sanitation laws like the meat inspection act. a failure would be the Sherman anti-trust act that was suppose to limit trusts in big businesses but instead it broke up unions in the workforce.
ReplyDeleteOne of the progressives’ great successes was when the new four amendments were added to the constitution that let the government collect income tax, protecting society through prohibition, providing new elections for senators, and extending women’s suffrage. Also a big failure wanted to limit child labor which was prevented by the courts and also the needs of African Americans and Native Americans which were poorly served.
ReplyDeleteAdressing racial injustice was a big failure. People were still treated unequal.
DeleteProgressive movements were successful on the working conditions of factory workers. This was a greatly discussed issue and brought up with it Unions, strikes and many other organizations like the knights of labor. All these movements paid of and working conditions were improved from what we read of "the jungle".
ReplyDeleteWell i actually believe that was a failure because they tried to improve conditions, but industry corruption worsened factory conditions, and many of the unions fell and didn't do much because they weren't funded sufficiently.
DeleteOne of the Progressives’ greatest successes was when president Roosevelt brought the square deal. The Square deal got control of corporations, consumer protection, and the conservation of the U.S natural resources. This helped all Americans and it helped the laborers get more power. The biggest failure was the many sources that lead to the Great Depression. There was debt in which people did not payed much attention to inflation so this also lead to the great depression.
ReplyDeleteIt was also a great success due to the fact that it controlled and stopped the rise of industrial capitalism.
DeleteThe progressive movement policy of laissez faire had been replaced by the idea of regulated capitalism.
ReplyDeleteHowever it did not provide direct government relief to the poor and needy.
I think during the progressive era the first focus was to help companies and anything social came second.
DeleteCapitalism hindered the economy since monopolies began to be created and had most of the power having advantages that small companies could not offer. But many still saw capitalism as an economic freedom .
DeleteOne of the success of the Progressive Movements was the long awaited amendment for women's suffrage, because it finally gave women what they wanted for years to be the equally represented in the government. As for one of the big failures was the 18 amendment which banned the distribution, production and the consumption of liquor. It turned out to be a failure because it led to the rise of organized crime.
ReplyDeleteYes, the 19th amendment made women feel and were equal among the men. However, a job that a women would get would usually become less of value.
DeleteI somewhat agrre with you because not all women were given the right to vote. Immigrants and Native Americans were not given the right to vote, so women's suffrage was not that great of a success.
DeleteOne of the successes in the progressive era was the Sherman Antitrust act, which stopped the attempts of monopolies. The prohibit of monopolies helped business companies from unfair business that monopolies caused. One of the failures in the progressive era was that there was no decrease of discrimination. African americans had no help during the progressive era. They were still not allowed health care and education .
ReplyDeleteThe progressive era was a time period, that improved in many ways, but it also had some failures. A big success was how they made food and drug regulations, healthier and helped to improve the workers. Unfortunately The economy did go into a depression such as a panic. People and the economy went down.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the regulations on drugs and food improved in the health of many workers that problems in their health.
DeleteOne of the greatest successes of the Progressives was that working conditions for women were improved, and the failure was trying to limit the rights of new immigrants which would be later labeled unconstitutional. Working conditions were improved because of the labor unions along with women's rights. There was a limitation of rights against immigrants and there still was no equality given to them. They needed people who would work with such low pay.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but working conditions didn't improve just for women, but for everyone.
DeleteProgressive movements were successful on the working conditions of factory workers. Child labor was decreaseing over time and the conditions in which the workers worked in were better and improved. One failure of the Progressive movements was adressing racial injustice. Even after many reforms immigrants and African Americans were still treated differently.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Trying to help African Americans was probably one of the biggest failures throughout the Progressive Era. It almost seems that African Americans were being ignored throughout the Progressive Era because there was nothing going on that tried to help them. Injustice and discrimination was still happening to them.
DeleteYes, African Americans were still dealing with inequality. They were being payed lower wages and still had to deal with segregation and injustice from society, as well as politically. They didn't have access to healthcare, private housing, loans and education rights that were available to the rest of society did.
DeleteOne of the progressive era's greatest accomplishments is women's right to vote.
ReplyDelete-For centuries only men could vote, but now women could vote. They finally had a voice in politics. This accomplishment would also stick permanently for centuries to come.
Greatest failures
One of the greatest failures was the 18th amendment. Which banned alcohol, however this amendment led to to the creation of the mafia, bootleggers, and high complex crime empires
That was a significant accomplishment because women were give the right to vote with the 19th amendment.
DeleteOne of the successes that the Progressive Movements brought along, were the establishments of National Parks. With America becoming an urban and industrialized country, many factories began to deplete Natural Resources. Some people wouldn't stand for this, so they started a conservation movement, which eventually led to formation of Nation Parks.
ReplyDeletethis was a great success because it actually followed through and did not allow the railroad companies in building through national parks that were established.
DeleteYou have a success but youre missing a failure. TR conserved the wilderness by making national parks.
DeleteOne important success that happened during the Progressive Era was ending monopolies. Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to use the Sherman Antitrust Act successfully against monopolies. However one of the failures that happened during the Progressive Era was trying to make the economy better by lowering debt that kept piling up in society. Eventually, The Great Depression came along.
ReplyDeleteThere was already depression even before this time. (Gilded age) but yes the great depression.
DeleteThere were many successful progressive movements that led to many improvements and changes that we see today. During the progressive era, one of the greatest and successful reforms was the ending and exposing of much of the corruption in the government and such. There were acts, such as the Pendleton act, that limited and inspected who could and would be hired into federal services. This helped balancing the amount of members that came from a political party so that it wouldn't be overpowered by the beliefs of just one party. Books and journalists would make public all of the fraud and corruption which led to much of their exposure of,not only the government, but also companies. One of the greatest failures were the attempts to recover form the Great Depression. During this time, everyone suffered for the most part. The stock market had taken a hard hit. Unemployment and tariffs increased. Many acts being placed to help were failing and some even caused greater issues. Although many issues were being improved, there were many falls which all contribute to the success and failure of the Progressive era.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressive's Era greatest success was winning victories state level rather than national level. More specifically the working class achieved great success when the Progrssives set limitations on the length of the work day, minimum-wage requirements, child labor laws, and urban housing codes. Also, many states enforced the 16th amendment which created the income tax in which people with higher incomes were given taxes with higher percentages. This resulted in fairness for the poor and the redistribution of the nation's wealth. In the other hand, the movement's greatest failure was the fight against racial discrimination. W.E.B Du Bois headed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People but later abandoned the organization due to lack of progress.
ReplyDeleteOne of the progressivism's success was regulating business. Monopolies were inevitable. They had massive resources and economies of scale , offering the U.S advantages that small companies could not offer. These large corporations could easily abuse their power. The idea of allowing this companies to exist but be regulated for the pubilc interest was supported by President Theo. Roosevelt. One of the failures of the progressives was leading to the Great Depression by giving the federal government power it had never used before.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but what about givinng women the right to vote, the goverment was finally recognizing women for what they are and not just property and people who had no voice.
DeleteYes businesses were regulated with the Square deal that Theodore Roosevelt adapted. This was the main program that outlined business relationships between the corporate leaders and the industrial workers and that fairness and equality would preside over the connection.
DeleteOne of the greatest success of the progressive era was the passing of the 19th amendment. This gave women the right to vote. This helped women's rights and showing that women are equal to men in many aspects. Giving women the right to vote gave them a lot more credit and responsibility that ever given before.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest failures were the corrupt politicians. Politicians became very greedy with their money. They no longer cared for the good of the country, but for their own personal growth.
I agree about the great success regarding to them implementing the 19th amendment. Congress was introduced to constitutional amendment in 1878, providing that "The right of citizens to vote shall not be abridged by the United
DeleteStates or by any State on account of sex." In 1890, Wyoming was admitted to the union becoming the first state to allow women's suffrage. In 1912, the first party to have a plank supporting suffrage for women was Roosevelt’s Progressive
Party.
To be specific, not all women were included in the 19th amendment. Immigrants, and Native american women were not considered citizens. So, were not included in this amendment.
DeleteAna Mendoza
The Progressives' greatest success was the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 which the food and drugs were able to pass if stamped. This was good because people wouldn't like something with stuff they don't know whats in it and that could make them ill.Though the greatest failure was the income tax which a congressman argued of that there would be a restraint in government spending because the lawmakers would relize that they were spending the tax payer's money. However, they never did and the nation is in lots of debt in this current economy.
ReplyDeleteAre you referring to the 16th amendment as the failure or what led to the 16 amendment as the failure?
DeleteThe greatest success of the progressive era was exposing the corruption of the govt. At the time journalists would reveal the problems capitalists and monopolies caused. For example, john D. Rockefeller used bribery, physical threats, and sabotage to take the oil company to the top.
ReplyDeleteThis would also be a failure because before being exploited many workers were manipulated and caused the number of the poor to increase so basically leaving no middle class.
I agree that monopolies did have a great negative impact. At the time it sounded like survival of the fittest.
DeleteOne of the biggest successes of the Progressive Movements wa the passing of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, thus giving them more of a role in the country. One of the greatest failures was the banning of alcohol, instead of reducing crime, it caused the rise of organized crime such as the mafia and bootleggers.
ReplyDeleteOne of their other failures was the lack to establish rights for immigrants
DeleteAgreed, at the time they thought baning alcohol was a good thing but all it brought was bootleggers and orginized crimes.
DeleteThe progressive era caused many changes in the U.S. Both successes and failures were included. Successes reflected movement toward the unity of the nation, but not in its entirety. For example, the frontier had been tamed (immigration), many great cities and businesses were formed, with fair opportunities to many eager workers. Children and women were also beginning to experience a sense of liberty from horrible job conditions to fair public treatment. However, not everyone was included in this new nation of prestige and opportunities. Many immigrants, native americans, and blacks were still treated unfairly. They were constantly threatened by their superiors to be replaced, since they were pretty easy to replace in the factory industries.
ReplyDeleteAna Mendoza
I completely agree Ana. Although there were great opportunities for citizens, there was much discrimination not only with ethnicities but also by class, which was a step backwards for improvement.
DeleteDuring the Progressive Era, foreigners were also treated unfairly. After America won the Spanish-American War, our nation gained the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam as protectorates. Americans mistreated Filipinos because they felt superior to the native people. Plus, America wanted to annex these islands as colonies and perhaps incorporate them into the nation later as states. The Philippines later declared war on America and in 1946, they gained independence after they were mistreated and abused.
DeleteOne great success of the Progressive Era was the implementation of the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906. Thanks to one very reliable account of the horrors that occur in meat packaging companies (The Jungle by Upton Sinclair), this act was established, and now there were more inspections of meat factories to make sure that citizens' health was not being put at risk. Although this was a vital step toward improvement, there were still some failures during this era like racial discrimination. There was still discrimination in American society, and that was a drawback to so much more improvements to be made. Colored people were still not receiving many rights, they were still inferior to Whites, which led to resentment on their part.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you yaji because if it washy for teddy Roosevelt reading the jungle book he wouldn't have found out about how the meat is being treated and how unhealthy it was for the workers.
DeleteIn the Progressive era there were lots successes but one big was the child labor laws. The child labor laws made to were kids couldnt work at a very young age. This also helped the kids by allowing them to geta education instead of working. One Failure was banning alcohol. The reason this was a failure was because now with alcohol being illegal it was starting to cause lots of crimes, for example, bootleggers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with alcohol being one of the big failures. It was made so there would be less crime, but instead it just ticked people off and they went on with their own rebellious motives.
DeleteA success would fighting back against corruption. Congress passed the Sherman antitrust act which prevented large firms from controlling a single industry in 1890. A failure would be the working conditions. Because of the massive immigration and population growth, there were not enough houses. Many people were now homeless and w/o job because all jobs were taken.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Camelia. I like how you brought up the antitrust act and you supported your statement well. I believe the working conditions were one of the worse, but they were able to fix that 7 years into the Progressive Era. Before they were able to fix child labor and women labor it was pretty rough, but they were able to pass laws and get them into better living conditions.
DeleteI disagree towards the failure with the working conditions. The Progressive movement actually helped people see the working conditions and how they bad they were. Afterwards they were made better.
DeleteOne of the Major Progressive movements that was a success was the prosperous of the farmers and the city people. The "Middle Class"
ReplyDeletewas finally getting a voice. One of the Major Progressive movement that was a failure were the trials for the Women's Rights. Although they tried so much to not be sexist, they have still major problems.
I agree that the Progressive movements was a success for the "Middle Class" though there were some points that were forgotten when working with labor and social problems.
DeleteOne of the progressives' greatest success was the seventeenth amendment which was the right for the American citizens to elect their senators. This was very important because this was a big step in converting the "U.S Government from a republic to a democracy." A failure of the progressives' was the eighteenth amendment- which was the prohibition of any intoxicating beverages. This was a failure because basically it didn't solve any problems, it may have seemed right at the time but it brought no good results to the common people. the only results this amendment brought were an increase in crime and poverty.Note that this was the era where Mafias became more prominent, and government funding had increased just trying to control both poverty and crime.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Raquel. Due to the Senators influence by political machines and business interests, they were replaced by direct election from the people, which gave them a voice!
DeleteRaquel i dont agree with the 18th amendment beeing a failure because i believe that it did help the people that might of been abused because of alcohol such as women and kids.
Deletei completely agree with you Maria! the prohibition of alcohol was a big failure that lead to an increase in crime rates- irony is that it was suppose to decrease it. Many Gangsters such as Al Capone played a big part in the black market distribution of alcohol. They are pretty much similar to the drug cartels of today modern time.
ReplyDeleteThat was one of the great failures of the progressive movement, the organized crime is one of the main problems that we never really rid ourselves of. Prohibition of alcohol causes trouble to arise.
DeleteAt this point, the people attempted to make living better by applying, approving and denying many things. In my opinion, the exposing the corruption of the government was a very big thing since at this time, the building of railroads and big businesses was a big thing, the people were able to know that their government was cheating them. One of the failures was that even though there was good things coming out of this, there was still poverty and it was increasing pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive movement was a response to the problems created by the transformation from a rural society to an urban and industrial society.
ReplyDeleteSome successes were women's suffrage and passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act making for health standards in the food industry. Now women were allowed to vote and the food will actually be healthy.
Some failures were that child labor wasn't regulated until years after the progressive era. This meant long, crucial working hours for them. Also blacks still faced inequality.
I agree with Sayra listing the Child labor reforms as a somewhat a failure due to the time periods. Failure on government priority it may seem.
DeleteOne significantly important reformation of the Progressive Era was the ratification of the 17th amendment. This is because it limited the power of capitalists and gave the opportunity for the people to take a bigger part on issues. One minor reformation was the Prohibition of alcohol, which really only caused more crimes.
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest successes was the Educational reform. This reform allowed several previously uneducated workers and immigrants to gain a diploma and this demand for education brought tons of schools into each city. One of the biggest failures had to be the temperance movement. The motive and idea were quite successful in empowering women in politics, however this plan backfired and made crime activity spike in the consumption and soliciting of illegal alcohol, which was, if anything, more dangerous.
ReplyDeleteAnother great accomplishment was the improvement of working conditions for factory workers due to labor laws.
Delete*Prohibition of Alcohol
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest achievements the progressive was their legacy and how it shaped the American government for years to follow. For example our modern regulatory state is rooted from progressivist legislation. Also the income tax is still confiscates the hard earned wealth of Americans. Their greatest failure was president William H. Taft. He supported teddys square deal but with all the other points he supported he actually satisfied conservative more than the progressives. With the Payne-Aldrich act he betrayed the platform. Teddy was so outraged he challenged taft for the presidency in 1912. Teddy formed the bull moose party in order to run as a 3rd party candidate however the vote was split resulting in the domocratic win.
ReplyDeleteA great achievement during the Progressive Era was the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act. This regulated the safety, labeling, and interstate shipment of food and medicine. This forbode companies from selling adulterated food or poisonous medicine.
ReplyDeleteA failure that occured would be the attempt at Prohibition. This outlawed the sell and consumption of alcohol because it was thought that it ruined lives. Hwoever, many people were against the Prohibition, leading it to be repealed.
A success of the Progressive's would be the improvement in Labor Laws. Labor Laws improved the working conditions for factory workers. It also sparked the rise of Labor unions. A failure would be the unfair treatment of immigrants. They failed to give the immigrants any equality.
ReplyDeleteLaws such as Child labor laws that restricted them from working in factories and made them get a education for the best of both the health and the future. As for the immagration it would soon bring new ideas and views towards the foreign workers.
DeleteOne of the greatest successes of the Progressives was establishing greater working conditions for women. It helped establish their pivotal role in society. One of the failures could be their lack of establishing fair treatments to the immigrants of foreign countries.
ReplyDeleteJust because women had better working conditions doesnt mean that was a complete success because they still had unequal rights compared to the men, but i will agree with the unfair treatment of immigrants.
DeleteI believe the Progressive's greatest success was the National Child Labor Committee formed in 1904 which removed the children from working in factories and creating better working conditions for the women. Children needed to focus on school and the factory was no place for a child to be. Women are supposed to be delicate and the factories back then were never a safe place for a woman to be. They got their heads straight and fixed what needed fixing. I believe the Progressive's biggest failure was the inequality of African Americans. Despite the fact that they fought in World War 1 they were still considered inferior.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressives came soon after the Gilded Age and had both failures and accomplishments. A few of their accomplishments to date are reforming working conditions, removing slavery, humanizing the mentally ill and prisoners, and getting rid of child labor at the same time as making education a priority for the children. "Roosevelt’s progressive impulses were strengthened by his term on the United States Civil Service Commission and as police commissioner of New York City, where he fought against corruption among New York’s finest." Some of their failures were that the african american people were STILL not treated equally. "Another limitation of the Progressive Era is that African-Americans still faced inequality......As we all know, it wasn't until 1964, with the Civil Rights Act, that things became better for blacks, with all segregation in public places finally being stripped away." Therefore, there were some perks and some fails.
ReplyDeleteThe inequality of African Americans set us back a lot. Ending segregation would've been a success and is now
DeleteThe Progressive Era soon came after the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age but a strain on our government and economy. Many movements occured but the most successful was the fight for better working conditions for women. Women were treated poorly during this time. the biggest failure was the failure to solve any problems having to deal with the African Americans and Native Americans.
ReplyDeleteYes the womens movement was succesful and the muckrakers really helped out in publicizing the conditions towards child labor
DeleteSuccesses of the progessives were the Interstate Commerce Act (1887) and the Sherman Antitrust Act (1890).Faliures were that it did not adress social issues.
ReplyDeleteone of the greatest successes and failures of the progressive era was abolition. during abolition alcohol was forbidden. this led to an increased prosperity via increased savings in banks and better attendance at work. this same reform was a failure in that it spurred the development of gangs. the gangs came about for the profitable business of bootlegging alcohol. this forced the repeal of prohibition due to the violence and the increased deaths due to poisoned alcohol. gangs turned to more profitable affairs such as prostitution and the dealing of narcotics.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest terms were racial issues, the progressives failed to address, however they were successful through the muckrakers. The way they publicized the reality of poverty and the way factories were ran and the conditions of child labor really opened the eyes of many for progressive reform.
ReplyDeleteOne of the success was that women had more rights. A big failure was that African-Americans were still being treated unequal.
ReplyDeleteyes women did gain more rights like working
Deletethe progressive era was a succes because the chid labor laws. childern where not allowed to work in factories or other parts but would have to go to school and effected the women to have a better working cnditions with childern not there . the progressive era was a fail because they tryed to ban alchol but with this just created more crime.
ReplyDeleteChild labor laws were one of the best things about the progressives in that kids at least had a chance to go to school, and learn.
DeleteOne thing that was a great success in the Progressives was that women rights weren't so limited and they got to work more but on the other hand on thing that was a failure was the limitation of immigration which I think could have contributed to the Great Depression.
ReplyDeleteAltough times were still very hard for everybody most conditions in factories did improve. Child labor laws were changed and frankly, for the best, they had to get a better education. For the women they had some of their rights that were given to them. Though all this was happening the immagration factor on U.S. workers was tough.
ReplyDeleteThe child labor laws helped children receive a madotory education instead of working all day and receiving a lower wage than women so i agree.
DeleteThe biggest success the Progressives had was that they created the Interstate Commerce Act. That act regulated railroads, and stopped the monopoly that was in place with them. Their biggest failure was that they did not address racial issues. The progressives could have easily dealt with the racial problems our country was having during that period, but instead chose to ignore it.
ReplyDeleteOne of the big success in Progressive reforms was the state reform of such as the secret ballots which kept a person vote to the voter not to the public. One of the failures in the reforms was the negligence of immigrants and their treatment during the reforms.
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest success the Progressives had was the creation of new laws to help the conditions of factories, now the factories were a little bit more safer than before. One failure the Progressives had was the rights for the African American people, they were still being misstreated.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressives’ greatest success was when new labor laws were introduced. These laws regulated child labor, secured a decent salary for the employees, and created safe working conditions. One of the Progressives’ greatest failures was when civil rights were not treated fairly with people of other color. African Americans were not treated fairly during this time.
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest successes of the Progressives was acts about working polocies for the people. The U.S made it mandotory for children to stop working in factories and to receive an education by law. One failure was the racism that continued againsts the blacks and how they werent treated as legal citizens should be.
ReplyDeletei agree, even though african americans fought it war, they were still inferior.
DeleteOne of the greatest successes of the Progressives was that women & children had more rights because of the National Child Labor Committee formed in 1904. I believe the biggest failure was the inequality of African americans.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest failures for the Progressives is that they failed to seek for the equal rights and treatments of african americans and other ethnicities. There was much discrimination towards them. A success was the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 which made the railroad industry rates to be fair and just etc.
