  2. President Theodore Roosevelt significantly reshaped the role of the federal government by enacting his Square Deal program. Once it was put into effect, the government was to concern itself in helping reform labor practices in America. Roosevelt's program was to help control the power of big corporations, protect consumers from false advertisement and the sale of unsafe products, and conserve America's natural resources. The Square Deal was designed to protect the middle class from big business and monopolistic trusts. Businesses were also protected from labor unions under the same program. Food and medications had to be legitimately labeled and represented when put up for sale. False advertisement and unsafe processing and packaging of these goods was no longer tolerated. The Square Deal was also responsible for helping conserve millions of acres of land from being exploited for commercial purposes.

  3. Under Theodore Roosevelt the federal passed many laws to improve labor conditions. For example, instead of 10 hours laborers now worked 9 hour shifts. Another concern was that children and woman shouldnt work.
The government did a good job of changing these conditions but of course there was obstacles.

In 1902, united mine threatened to cease the distribution of supply winter fuel into the big cities. With the help of Roosevelt, the workers had less hours to work and more pay. In my opinion, he really cared about the people.

  5. In regards to trusts, Roosevelt is responsible with the Square Deal policies. He played a big role in World affairs with the construction of the Panama Canal. The role of the federal government changed drastically as we intervened with other countries. He also nullified the Hay-Paunce Treaty and supported an insurrection of Colombia control of Panama Canal. The construction of the Panama Canal allowed more international trade and the U.S was exempt from paying tolls for the usage of the canal.

  8. During Rooselvelt's Presidency , he became known as the "trust buster" ,filing 44 suits against monopolies . He believed that a greater government control over the economy was needed .Focusing on bringing big businesses under strong regulations in order to serve the common people whom he represented he began to eliminate and control trusts. The Sherman Antitrust Act ,law that declared illegal all combinations in restraint of trade, had been approved by congress in 1890. But everytime an enforcement of the act was attempted , US courts sided with businesses. This stopped when Teddy Roosevelt started enforcing the act . The first trust to be affected by this new change was Northern Securities , railroad company controlled by trust giant , J Pierpoint Morgan .

  9. Theodore Roosevelt was known as the "trust buster". This is due to the fact that he took further action in putting an end to over powerful industrialists that were dominating the economy and had formed monopolies or "trusts". Thus, Teddy Roosevelt enforced the Sherman Anti-Trust act which prohibited the trusts (monopolies) and regulated interstate commerce. The federal government was to control or limit these monopolies, and thanks to Teddy Roosevelt about 90 trusts were broken.

  10. Theodore Roosevelt AKA "Trust Buster"! He was all for the public as he aimed for the breaking down of "bad" trusts. They were corrupt businesses that attempted to cheat and monopolize innocent citizens. Head of these trusts were "non-manufacturing sectors like railways, local transit and banking sectors". Roosevelt eventually ended up filing 44 suits against monopolies. The suits were towards Rockefeller's very successful oil producing corporation and others similar to that. The federal government was then more to help the public because of of Roosevelt's help.

There was little safety to workers, poor working conditions, and very long work hours. When Roosevelt was president the Federal government changed because the president wanted working condition to change. Change started by investigation of women and labor, regulating hours of labor, inspections, and securing wages for workers. Roosevelt also created the " Square Deal" that would create a fair deal for managements and labors.

Roosevelt wanted to increase American power and did so by gaining other countries' trust especially those in Latin America. He did so by paying many of LA states' debts. Roosevelt was also big on protecting Latin Americans, claiming that they were brothers."Speak softly and carry a Big Stick." If a country were to pose a threat towards U.S. or its colonies- FDR would react by threatening to use his "Big Stick" in reference to the American Navy or Military. This Big Stick diplomacy was effective because it demonstrated how powerful The United States Navy was and still is. Roosevelt turned The United States into a Military Superpower and it is because of him that America is involved in many military affairs.
