Good afternoon, History Minions!
I hope your Spring Break is both fun and safe! For those of you doing make-up work, this is a great time to get caught up.
Accordingly, this week's blog post is for extra credit. :) If you choose to do it, then be sure to give facts and to respond to another person's post.
Prompt:
What was the most significant cause and effect of WWI?
Feel free to think of an economic, social, political, military, technological, domestic, or foreign policy category--BUT you may only pick ONE cause and ONE effect that hasn't yet been discussed. You may wish to debate your classmates in a respectful manner and bring in outside reading to assist you in your post!
Happy blogging!
One of the main causes that led to WWI was Imperialism. European countries were trying to increase their power and wealth by adquiring additional territories under their control. Africa and Asia were among these because of the raw materials that they provided. Competition rised with the desire for greater and more powerful empires leading to confrontations that led to the war.
ReplyDeletei agree Germany was taking advantage of the imperialist powers and became a huge threat.
DeleteI agree, imperialism played a big role in WWI. The countries were also trying to build up their navies and armies to gain more power, and pose a treat to rivals.
DeleteOne of the main causes of WW 1 was social darwinism because America wanted to become a Imperial Power so they built up their Navy causing an arms race with the other Imperial Powers. One of the major effects of WW1 was a greater number of countries began to have more liberal forms of gov't, and Germany's anger rose to the point where it eventually provoked WW 2.
ReplyDeleteThere were many political aspects that played a part in World War 1, but they didn't come into play until the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on their trip to Bosnia, which Serbia wanted control of. Austria-Hungry then declared war on Serbia, then Russia and Germany joined, which eventually led to the expansion of the war around the world.
DeleteOn the subject of social darwinism, there was about to be a war or races.as said in the document "our country "
DeleteBy 1900 the British Empire extended over five continents and France had control of large areas of Africa. With the rise of industrialism countries needed new markets. The amount of lands owned by Britain and France increased the rivalry with Germany who had entered the scramble to acquire colonies late and only had small areas of Africa.
ReplyDeleteGermany competed with Britain even more because with the industrialization of Germany, the country became the largest iron producer. The strive for colonies and a longing for territory was a struggle between Britain and Germany because Germany had almost no colonies while Britain colonized the world. WWI was a time where they basically fought for power, land, and wealth.
DeleteNationalism because it was the reason why people disliked others from a different country than they are. This cause the nations to struggle among each other. Another cause was competition in economics and military. Britain had an excellent navy and wanted to compete with Germany, which was out growing the British military in strength and with weapons. Also the strive for colonies and a longing for territory was a struggle between Britain and Germany, because Germany had almost no colonies while Britain colonized the world.
ReplyDeleteSome effects from WWI were the economic strain that resounded through Europe and the rest of the world. Inflation skyrocketed in many colonies. WWI was also the cause for a rise in nationalistic tendencies leading to the demand for independence in many British colonies of outside Europe.
Technologically speaking, I think Machine guns caused WWI because Machine guns were known to be weapons of mass destruction. The effect was that they caused WW1 to be different from any war before, and caused more casualties and forced soldiers to fight from trenches, it also made the cavalry charge obsolete and prompted armies to build tanks.
DeleteNationalism did make others feel superior to others because it was the loyalty to a one's nation. The people would set their countries political and economic goals before anyone else because they were superior. It divided Italy and Germany.
DeleteSamantha M. Ameicana got inspired by John Moses Browning invention of the machine fun in 1895. His gun was designed to use the propulsion of a special gas to operat a piston that auromatically ajected spent cartridges fron the barrel and inserted fresh ones.
DeleteThe main cause of WW1 was the building up of alliances. The US began to form many alliances hoping that forming them they would be protected and helped when needed. Yes, it did protect them but it also created dangers when "having each others back." If one nation went to war with another these nations would depend on their alliances for support with the war. This created a problem because it would send a country to war when there was no reason for it. All these alliances were building up like "Three Emperors League" and this gave Europeans the feeling of suspicion. The alliances began to argue, back stab each other and to worry each other. They were national aggression and sparked up the war.
ReplyDeleteI agree, all of the alliances caused a domino effect that led to WWI.Italy and United States didn't join in until later in the war to and and join the side of the allies.
DeleteThey also sparked up the war over protecting one anothers countries and the only way to doing that was to strengthen their military.
DeleteI agree, These alliances took part into sparking up the war. The increased in military frighten other allies because they thought the allies increasing their military were ready to attack and start the war.
DeleteEven though the United States was egged to embroil itself into World War One, the United States did not join the war until the Lusitania was sunk by German U-boats. The US opposed German submarine warfare.
DeleteAlso different European countries were competing against each other over imperialism. Countries in Europe wanted to have the most control and power
DeleteAn event that really contribute with these alliances and that eventually led to WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand(heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne) and his wife Sophie by Gravilo Princip . On July 28 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia.Within 6 days later WWI began.
ReplyDeleteOne cause of WWI was the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. After the assassination , Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia started to mobilize because of it's alliance with Serbia.Which made Germany declare war on russia. Which began the start of the war.One effect of WWI was the treaty of versailles. The treaty of versailles was a peace settlement that was singed after WWI ended. The treaty made Germany give up territory to France and reduce their armed forces.
ReplyDeletei believe the assasination had a lot to do with the war. A spark hit when this happened to archduke.
DeleteA cause of WW2 imperialist Germany was growing an becoming a threat to the US when they attacked the soviet union. If the soviet union was beat by Germany the Us thought that Germany would shut them out from all the foreign markets which was what the US didn't want. therefore the US backed up Russia when the Germans attacked causing the US to get involved in foreign affairs.
ReplyDeleteOne cause of WWI was because germany wanted to increase their own wealth. They wanted all of the power, and a desire of international influence. Soon they started to make naval arms that caused a spark with other nations. One effect of this war was that it did not completely end with the treaty of versailles, this caused little problem.
ReplyDeletethey also searched for alliances to seek more power
DeleteOne cause was the alliance system. The alliance system entangled the involved countries with treaties and agreements that often contradicted each other, causing conflict between a few countries to escalate into world war 1.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Bianeth. The alliance system that existed caused much tension between different countries. It led to many disputes, like the fight over the Balkans and different territories to gain more influence.
DeleteThe widespread of militarism was a cause of WWI; the European nations began arming to protect their riches. In order to protect they had to increase the size and strength of their militaries, which caused Europe to become extremely unstable. The aristocrats, dictators, and military elites had way too much control over Russia, Germany, and Austria and the war was one consequence for their craze for military power. Though Britain’s royal navy was stronger than Germany and Austria, Hungary’s navies combined. Since the aristocrats in Germany and Austria Hungary knew they were losing the arms race, they decided the best way to catch up to Britain’s royal navy was to declare war.
ReplyDeleteA cause of WWI was militarism. Each imperial nation believed that they had a stronger military and navy than others, and soon, it became an arms race to see which country was more powerful. It also led to alliances being formed between Britain and France and Germany and Austria. By 1914, many European nations had armies and navies, and thus, World War I began. One social effect of World War I was because the US men were fighting out in Europe, many women had to take over their jobs and produce supplies for battles. Women started to receive benefits, after the war they gained rights (like the right to vote). The war may damaged the US, but women got something good out of it.
ReplyDeleteOne important cause of World War I was the competition between Austria-Hungary and Serbia and Russia to gain territory and influence in the Balkans. The Balkans was the source of much tension between Austria-Hungary and the alliance of Serbia and Russia. Then the rival powers started to pull in their other alliances (Germany, Great Britain, France) into the conflict. This diplomatic clash between these and other great countries led to more conflict, which then initiated the first world war. An economic effect of World War I was that some Great Powers were left damaged, like Great Britain in Germany. Britain may have won the war with its allies, but they still were left with much debt and damage to its economy. Because the Germans and their allies were defeated, they owed a huge amount of money to Britain and France. Apart from their own war costs, they were forced to pay other nations. Germany suffered the worst when it came to economics after WWI.
ReplyDeleteRussian's involvement in the war would have much greater costs within its domestic policies. It was left devastated and the people sought sought comfort turning towards socialism and eventually overthrew the government.
DeleteI agee, but if it wasn't for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, they wouldn't have gone to war. The assassination led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, and then the alliance system made many nations join the war.
DeleteWWI occurred during an age of imperialism. Every nation had their own agenda of building up empires and out doing other nations. Politically they set up alliances that would give security amongst a common enemy. Alliances can protect nations just as much as they can drag nations into a mess that didn't concern them. When Ferdinand was assassinated it started a domino effect that brought nearly every nation into war. Even the isolationist and Neutral American joined in the fight. The greatest effects were towards the European Economy war is always very hard on the economy of a nation and because alliances were made nations had to share the cost. Germany ultimately was blamed for the war and forced to pay extensive reperations.
ReplyDeleteA significant cause of WWI was militarism. Having a bigger military made the nation/country more powerfull than the rest. Along with militarism came Alliances, as well as the competition to gain territory, which lead to WW1. An economic effect of World War I had was the it left alliances in much debt and damage to its economy.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years before the Great War, many European nations were embroiled in conflicts and crises with one another. The hostilities before World War One escalated throughout the continent so much so that war broke out after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914. The foreign policy of many European nations changed dramatically following the July Crisis. Therefore, the most important cause of World War One was the hostility between European nations before the start of the war. Unfortunately after the conclusion of the war, the foreign policy of many nations remained bitter towards others, and this consequently set the stage for a second major conflict that was soon to come, World War Two.
ReplyDeleteMilitarism was a huge factor. the European nations were growing even more powerful, and the armed forces of many of these countries like Britain, Russia and Germany. Everyone was thinking they were big stuff including the US.
ReplyDeleteAlso alliance problems with Germany also just made things worse for everyone. Just little by little tension grew until they couldnt hold it in anymore
i agree with you! But i feel as if the German forces were not that much powerful as Britain for example. Germany was just one of those countries who strive to walk alongside the best.
DeleteA significant cause that is associated with imperialism is the use of oil instead of steam as a power source. The efficiency of oil over steam made it much more valuable. This caused countries to look search for regions that had vast amounts of oil. Imperialist countries began to acquire territories abundant with oil which helped them build up their empire. This made some nations take over parts of Africa and Asia, causing rivalry amongst them which would eventually lead to them fighting over them.
ReplyDeleteWe can pretty much agree that if it were not for the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 by a group called Black hand, the WW1 might have started at a later time. Besides this obvious fact, Nationalism may have also played a big part in the initiation of this war. An example to prove this is Germany, previous to the war Germany was not "fully recognized" by other countries and pretty much wanted to prove itself and "Fit in" lol. The effect of this war was that, for one it proved to America that it could not be a world cop. It also lead to women suffrage, and many countries in HUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE debt!
ReplyDeleteOne of the most significant cause of WW1 was the Balkan Crisis, when Austria took over Bosnia-Herzegovina and thats when the increasing tension in the Balkans begin and challenged the major powers Austria-Hungary, Russia and Germany.
ReplyDeleteA significant cause that led to world war 1 Nationalism. Britain had controlled a lot of countries around the world. Also Germany had a hunger which led to want more power and a greater influence around the world. A lot of nations wanted to have power so they were all competing against each other to see who would have the greater control. This eventually led to the conflicts between each country in Europe
ReplyDeleteagreed but also the assasination of the arch duke is what set everything in motion, atleast in my opinion it was.
DeleteImperialism to me was one of the main causes of WW1. Before World War 1, Africa and parts of Asia were points of argument amoung the European countries. This was especially true because of the raw materials these areas could provide. The increasing competition and desire for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation that helped push the world into World War I.
ReplyDeleteNationalism, militarism and imperialism were all important factors of world war I, however i believe what really set the fire was the assasination of the arch duke. It was the trigger to all of this chaos.
