Greetings History Minions!
Some of the comments last week were excellent!  Let's keep up the good work :)
Modern historians demonize imperialism, pointing to the long-lasting damage done to conquered people, their languages, religions, and cultures.  For instance, at the lasting legacy imperialism, and apartheid left on the country of South Africa!  Consider what the British did to India.  And who can forget the fact that imperialism is a major cause of WWI?  In addition, significant and on-going ecological damage occurred.
But contemporary Americans (and Europeans) usually thought otherwise.  Many were convinced of the nobility of their actions.  Let's consider American imperialism this week.  Give a positive AND a negative economic, social, cultural, political, geographic, or diplomatic consequence.
Consider musing on the topic and giving your thoughts: What were the primary causes?  Who can we blame--or should we actually place "blame" on anyone?  Can imperialism be justified?  Does it still exist?  Does it still affect the world today?  What can you bring into discussion from The White Man's Burden, from The United States Looking Outward, and from Josiah Strong's Our Country?
Don't forget to blog twice and to support your opinions with solid historical fact.  :)  Happy Blogging!
Imperialism was greatly wanted in the early 1900's. They saw how great United States were doing and they hear the European Nations expanding and at a time where the frontier was still very important to the nation, they wanted to globalize too. Economically, they wanted to sell their goods and buy goods from other countries. This leads to a rise in the economy as well.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Americans were really fond of Americans. not really any other immigrants. Even though our nation was based from immigration, foreigners are really looked down upon at this time, as they do not like the Asians, and the Irish, and other countries coming in into the nation. They wanted to be the same country that they had been for over a century. They felt that this mass immigration and imperialism would be a bad idea since not all the people in the world shared the same ideas as the US had.
During these times there was a mood of social Darwinism and everyone was trying to come out on top. Imperialism came from the countries capable of expanding taking over others to expand their race. Fight for the fittest. They all believed the Anglo Saxon race would come out on top yet everyone was trying to step up their game. Also U.S reward for imperialism was the praise from prosperous foreign nations like Great Britain and France.
DeleteAround this age, America had the desire of becoming a world power. To attain the status of a world power, however, the United States had to establish an overseas empire to validate their strength. American imperialism was the solution to this problem, for it resulted in the United States becoming a world power.
DeleteAfter the conclusion of the Spanish-American War, the United States was given possession of several territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. While under control of the United States, these colonies gained some of the economic advantages the United States had. American infrastructure, for example, was the main aspect that these territories obtained. However, these colonies were powerless when it came to America managing their economies. America was highly interested in maximizing profits from their colonies; not much consideration was taken about effectively governing these territories. The cause of this domination of economics over other territories originated from the belief of Social Darwinism. Many Americans, at the time, believed that they were superior to others. However, no motive whatsoever can justify oppressing an entire nation of people. Moreover, the culprits of the consequences of imperialism were Americans who had an overpowering surge of nationalism and superiority. To this day, America still possesses Puerto Rico as a commonwealth. Some Puerto Ricans, however, wish to declare independence, but fall short of support. Much like the three selections mentioned above, Americans believed that they were created dominant and must therefore help the needy and expand their nation while conquering others.
ReplyDeleteThey also wanted those territories for military purposes, as they could establish a great and powerful navy.
DeleteAmerica had be be as strong as any other navy. they needed those areas for stratigic reasons
DeleteAmerica, at the time, was acting like a teacher's pet because not only was is doing good, it was going beyond its capabilities in order to help out those who needed it most. It saw the rise in opportunity and took it in order to gain something back, and eventually that risk would pay, if the world new it or not.
DeleteA negative effect of economic American imperialism were the monlpolies which had lots of power over mostly all of the U.S.However, a positive was that there were lots of exports going out the country giving the country money.
ReplyDeleteThe primary causes were forign competitors,manopolies,addictions..etc.I think imperialism can't be justified because there will always be people with higher power or influencing others. Thus continues to exsist till this day and affecting the world. In "The United States Looking Outward",the people are all forgotten about being described alien.
I believe that Imperialism can be justified in some instances because if it wasn't for that our country wouldn't be where we are now. If it wasn't for their desire to expand overseas or their ambission we wouldn't have what we have now. It also increased trade, wealth, and power.
DeleteNot only exports, but the US also gained very valuable resources like bananas and coffee. Their search for these resources was one of their main reasons for entering other countries.
DeleteAgreed, the Panama Canal positively increased the economy and trade (exports+imports)of America.
DeleteSuch expansions also brought along more petroleum which was something the US was really starting to use since it had started to industrialize.
DeleteIn the eyes of most Americans Imperialism was justified as shown in the "White Man's Burden". It was the U.S job to care for the poor, helpless, child and demond-like, others. In the eyes of the Americans they were doing the right thing, putting forth all their hard work for the benefit of the ungrateful foreign countries like the Philippines. The negative effects of Imperialism was that those countries the U.S was trying to help ended up hating them for destroying their culture and way of life. To the U.S the only reward they were going to get was the praise of other Prosperous countries like Great Britain and France. America justified their imperialism thinking they were sacrificing the best of their best for another's good yet the only thing they were really doing was going in to others territory to mess them up. Those foreign countries didn't want them there. U.S not only represented a better healthcare program or education to them. Foreigners saw them as someone coming in to take over and change everything. U.S saw them as animals because they didn't know any better.
ReplyDeleteAlso they were willing to sacrifice the best of the best in order for the nation to prosper.
DeleteInvading the other countries for their own salvation was a cover up for the fact that the U.S wanted to demonstrate they were better than all the other great powers. The young men who were deployed to help looked down upon them. They really did believe that by "helping" them suddenly Americans were better.
DeleteMany Americans believed that the U.S had to expand. Some causes for imperialism are the increase in population, wealth, and industrial production. Their desire to compete with Europe overseas grew. Foreign trade became increasingly important! Dominance, power, and control was part of imperialism. Josiah Strong advocated superiority of Anglo-Saxon civilization. Urged Americans spread religion and democratic values to backward people. A positive effect of imperialism would be the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal benefited the United States in trade because it was a good passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Some negative effects were that the American and German navies nearly came to blows in 1889 over the faraway Samoan Islands. Also America and Italy were on the brink of war because of the lynching of 11 Italians. Imperialism is just like ambission, they want more and more, and they have both positive and negative results.
ReplyDeleteAlso, another positive effect of imperialism was that the U.S helped Panama gain their independence from Colombia.
DeleteAmerican imperialism had a negative effect with foreign countries like Great Britain , Italy and Germany because the U.S would either go into a territory that the other imperial nations were civilizing. It brought a lot of tension between the imperialistic powers which led to World War 1.
ReplyDeleteA positive effect of imperialism was the acquisitions of the Philippines and Guam and also the establishment of democracies in some of the central american countries. The Imperialistic views still stick with us today with that hate towards immigrants and the racism still existing in some parts of the U.S
I agree Kimberly, America now posed a threat and was competition to other imperial powers, which led to much conflict. The conquered countries not only received democracy, America also help these countries build their infrastructure, and also made their technology advance.
DeleteImperialism is never considered as a good cause and effect. At first when it occurs it may seem as a positive effect, but in the long run, for example in this case it was a negative effect. All Africans and Asians were heavily exploited and were given no rights to do anything even though the mother countries gave them modern culture. Colonies inside colonies would fight because they wanted independence and have their own government and rule. There were many ethnics group that had nationalistic feelings but could not accomplish anything and become a free nation because of Imperialism. The mother country's that did the taking over were only after a few things and unfortunately did happen to accomplish what they were after. They wanted raw materials, markets for goods, national glory, balance of power and they also felt as though they needed to help smaller nations as though it was their burden, which Europeans called "White Man's Burden." In their point of view they thought they were helping people but really all they were doing was hurting the smaller colonies. Mother countries were destroying ethnic groups and causing civil wars between smaller nations. This newer modern Imperialism was never productive.
ReplyDeleteMany races were seen as a threat to the United States. The main reason they were seen as a threat was because their cultural was not seen as normal to americans. Different religions and language seemed intimidating to others. Which was why the "normal" cultural was forced on many.
DeleteAmerica wanted to impose on other countries because of the need of new markets and products because of The White Man’s Burden. Trying to convert other countries into believing we were helping them by telling them what was best for them, and if Americans didn’t help they would be conquered by other countries like France and Germany. The United States then grew stronger and the countries that were imperialized made trade agreements and were overwhelmed with the revolutions. Trade was what made the United States an active member in different world affairs, during the 1890’s the US became very important in industrial powers of the world. As the country was improving the military was too, the Navy especially expanding in areas of the world where US had not had the capability to go. The war with Spain and Roosevelt’s presidency caused the US to have extensive economic, military and imperialistic power which was good but for a certain amount of time but not too long.
ReplyDeleteI think as long as the other country the imp. power is helping has resources they help, and when there is no point, the imp. power will leave. And the white man's burden is just to fool people we are just doing this for good.
DeleteI agree i believe amaerica thought they were going to get swallowed up by the imperial powers for example when america bought alaska becuase they feared russia would want to move back into canada.
DeleteThe main causes for American Imperialism were the desire for wealth, new raw materials, and the idea that it was their duty to better the natives' lives. America also wanted to protect themselves from outside threats, which is why they annexed islands surrounding them in the Pacific (Hawaii). Publications like The White Man's Burden and Our Country influenced the public to support imperialism, thinking that since the White race is superior, it was up to them to intervene in third world countries. The one to blame for this would be world powers, including the US. Because of them, there was discrimination, racism, and much conflict in those developing countries. they A positive effect of American Imperialism was that America gained the international status that it always wanted. It became a world power like Britain, France, and Germany. The US became a nation that was to be feared. A negative effect would be that because of so much competition between imperial nations, it led to conflict, which eventually led to World War I, the war that led to much death and destruction, all because of these countries fighting over territory and resources.
ReplyDeleteMost of these high-ended countries wanted to be superior and dominate. They each wanted land and those resources which all signified power. I agree that World powers did share the blame for these events. They were the ones competing and using third world countries to make themselves advance.
DeleteI agree with you because america did try their best to help out the natives' because they did want more power but I don't think the best way was to start a war was to start racism and conflicts with other countries, it just made a bigger mess.
DeleteOne positive effect of American Imperialism was United State's involvement with Panama. The U.S helped Panama receive their liberty and democracy that was taken when Columbia was in control of Panama . Although there were great effects of American Imperialism, One big negative effect of the imperialism was that U.S. was forcing their cultural to other countries. The U.S. believed that their way of life was the best way to live by, so they forced others that were fine with the cultural that they already had.
ReplyDeleteYes, a selection like "Our Country" urged many Americans to spread religion and democratic values. This gave Americans the idea of their superiority over other countries. This also spread the idea of Social Darwinism which was the earth only belonged to the most fit. So this was the way America saw themselves as the best fit. They then tried to turn everyone like them.
DeleteI agree with your negative point because of the power which the U.S had over others and made them believe in the religion. This was said in the white man's burden,"Bring all hopes to nought and have done with childish days",explaining the way american's care was given to the others.Therfore influencing the people .
DeleteA positive economic matter is that imperialism helps feed the people and fix the financial problem in the country/city/state. A negative cultural matter is that most imperialist don't care about the counrty/city/state's previous way of life. Instead the imperialist power forces their religion and way of life even if they don't want it. Everyone believes they're are right in "civilizing" third world country. No one can be blamed because they all believe they're right. Imperialism still exist today, In africa the U.S is forcing Africans to be catholic/christians. We send them food, build their schools, and teach them about god. Disregarding their religion and way of life
ReplyDeleteImperialism overall helps other countries who are willing to get help.Another positive effect was the panama canal.
DeleteNo one should be blame because imperialism benefitted a lot of countries from falling. Two of which were the Philippines and Cuba.
DeleteWhen America moved into, regions to do business, it was practicing expansionism, which most Americans supported, but when it took control of another country, however, it was exercising imperialism, which became a huge controversial topic. Indeed, the book called "The Influence Of Sea Power Upon History," by Captain Alfred T. Mahan increased the govt's interest in imperialism. Mahan argued that successful foreign trade relied on access to foreign ports, which reqired overseas colonies, and colonies in turn required a strong navy. Also, there was the belief that the United States had a moral obligation to "Christianize and Civilize" the foreigners and that it was their duty to promote Democracy, this came to be known as the White Man's Burden. So then, the U.S later on acquired Hawaii when searching for a port along the trade route to Asia. Also, another huge gain for the U.S occured when they defeated Spain in the Spanish-American War, and gained control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. In the end, it can be said the these acquired territories became socially "civilized" since the native population were educated and adopted the American ways. The U.S grew economically wealthy and became one of the SUPER POWERS. Now, negatively, these territories really never gained their independence but instead were exploited to the U.S benefit and the colonial subjects were not entitled to the same protections and privilages as the U.S citizens.
ReplyDeleteStories like "Our Country and a White Mans Burden" are social consequences on imperialism and encourage Americans to impose their ways to others.
ReplyDeleteIn the "White Mans Burden" there is huge sense of imperialism. America is the elite or the emperor of all and it is our duty to save those who are in need and need our help. America has to suffer a burden that is to help the other 3rd world countries with their needs. America imposes their beliefs and restricts their religions, languages and cultures. America believes everyone must be like them and conquers many.
In "Our Country" it emphasizes American Whites superiority to others. It urges Americans to spread their democratic and religious values and Social Darwinism is huge topic in this selection.
Imperialism can not be blamed on any one but it is still in affect today. America still feels superiority to other nations and still feels like everyone should follow their values.
Even though America had imposed it's way of life on others, it also helped those foreign countries in a way. U.S. brought many good things, like education, healthcare and other things
DeleteAmerican imperialism was really driven by the wanting of the resources and riches in other countries, and the feeling of being superior to other countries. For many of the Americans, the "White Man's Burden" was the justification for their actions and their goals set. America not only wanted to grow, but also outgrow, the other advanced countries. As a nation, America had quickly advanced like no other country (especially with the expansion to the west)and felt as if they could dominate the rest. Although imperialism does exist today, it's not seen in the same ways as it was in the 1900s. A good result from the imperialism was the accepting of the idea from the open door policy. It was the concept of foreign affairs and tradings with one another freely. It also helped other countries gain independence, and gave high powered countries some competition. Some negative results were the consequences that people suffered. Although American believed they were helping, many people of other countries thought the complete opposite. They saw it as destructive, offensive and as if they were being controlled.
ReplyDeleteImperialism wasnn't completely destructive. Americans were trying to educate and civilize other nations. The result of this was sometimes failure, but there were cases of them succeeding in civilizing a nation.
DeleteAmerican Imperialism had both Positive and Negative effects. Some Positive effects of American Imperialism were the creation of the Panama Canal that certainly helped world economies and benefited people in the region. It also increased transportation and communication facilities due the control of world-wide areas needing fast transport and communication. Also, the part from " The White Man's Burden" about bringing civilization to undeveloped areas, helped areas get better Sanitation and a higher standard of living.
ReplyDeleteA negative effect would be the control that monopolies had over the U.S. They controlled most of the US. Another negative effect was that Americans didn't really care about anybody else except themselves. They thought of themselves as superior and overpowering. They were really racist towards immigrants and did not care for them. They did not want the Asians, Irish, etc. coming to the U.S. America was embedded in it's own ego. Imperialism is not popular, whatsoever in today's culture, however go back a century and people and people would praise it.
The u.s was all about power and control but some things were good some bad. The conutry wanted to help other countries and i think in a way, one good thing is that the country was now from coast to coast and immigrants wuch as Asians from the west and Irish from the east came for work. The frontier was set and work from foreigners and also citizens built the economy. Power was global and The US helped the countries it could benefit from.
ReplyDeleteI agree.Imperialism had a great impact on American Economy . It set America as a world leader in agriculture and industrial development .
DeleteI agree with you Luis, however shortly after this, the already uneasy relationships with the Germans and English only tensified.
DeleteAmerican leaders were enticed by the many opportunities that third world countries had to offer. Raw materials, cheap labor, and the possibility of gaining profit prompted the nation to intervene. The public was convinced that it was a benefit to both sides by written publications like The White Man's Burden and Our Country. Kipling and Strong made the the people believe that it was the country's duty to educate and better the indigenous peoples' lives, to "civilize" the "savages". Is there someone to blame? I believe that yes, the imperial powers were at blame. The developing nations may have advanced when it came to technology and their infrastructure, but the people lost so much. When imperialism was over, the countries were left divided, filled with conflict and discrimination. They lost their religions and cultures. Imperialism still affects the world. It was not till the 1990's that South African apartheid ended, something that imperialism created. One positive consequence of American Imperialism was that the US took in Hawaii as a state to gain more access to neighboring islands and to protect the nation from outside threats from the Pacific. Another positive outcome was that although the natives did not want it, they did gain good values and teachings from America. The US also gained many resources. A negative effect would be that the countries that were conquered were forced to do hard labor to provide the resources. Countries lost their culture when the Americans enforced their values on them, they did not allow them to express themselves.
ReplyDeleteOne positive aspect of imperialism is the involvement of U.S in Panama. U.S wanted to build the Panama Canal to make trading easier. However Columbia owned Panama at the time and did not allow U.S to build nor use a canal in their territory .However Panama was not happy with the way Columbia ruled their country so U.S helped them overthrow it in exchanged of the Panama Canal. This helped both nations economically, and politically for Panama since U.S has helped them maintain their liberty and democracy. A negative aspect of American Imperialism was the competition it brought between other imperial nations which eventually led to the start of WWI.
ReplyDeleteThe panama canal was a ver important factor, i agree. This helped trade and since this was built material got transported quicker.
DeleteAmerica had power like no other during the time of imperialism. They believed that their power was superior to that of the rest of the world and tried to impose their laws on other coutries they deemed to be troubled. These beliefs of superiority resonated with most citizens, as seen in The White Man's Burden. The reason for these feelings was the rapid rise to power that came to the United States. I don't believe that anyone is to blame, because by "helping" the other countries, the Unites States was trying to help them gain the power they were experiencing. Their intentions were good, but the execution was not.
ReplyDeleteWell said! Also, keep in mind that the U.S was trying to promote their own ideas and beliefs, for example democracy.
DeleteAna Mendoza
I agree with you. Imperialism is ever present in society. Although most of society can now see how wrong it is, the government still continues to impose their beliefs on others. Just because certain things have worked for us, doesn't mean it will work for others as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Social Darwinism is a big contributing factor also.
DeleteOne cause of American Imperialism is The Panic of 1893. It was a serious economic depression in the United States. It was marked by the collapse of railroad overbuilding and shaky railroad financing, resulting in a series of bank failures. Compounding market overbuilding and the railroad bubble, was a run on the gold supply. The Panic of 1893 was the worst economic depression the United States had ever experienced at the time. The Panic of 1893 convinced some businessmen industry had over expanded resulting in overproduction & under consumption.
ReplyDeleteImperialism soon led to them wanting to buy the land and buy goods from other nations. It made a big step economically especially after the depression. Alot of businesses and transportation got better. A negative effect was the control of the monoopolies and the control of corruptive men. This caused many downfalls in the U.S.
ReplyDeletetoo much corruption is a big problem and that can tie with everyone wanting to have power.
DeleteMonopolies weren't so much a product of Imperialism. Imperialism brought new markets and in doing so destroyed many cultures or belittled entire nationalies simply because they were not Anglo-saxon.
DeleteI agree with the positive effects you stated. Also, they wanted to produce a lot of goods in our own factories and industries. It ended up being more than than the U.S. demanded for. The abundance of goods produced needed the growth of new markets which eventually led to the betterment of the American economy.
DeleteOne positive economic effect that was produced from American Imperialism was the economical boost received in other third world countries from the modernized help that america provided them with. For example, railways, canals and roads. However, one negative cultural effect involved the humiliation and judging of other "inferior" nations. Basically, America underestimated other cultures other than their culture.
ReplyDeleteAna Mendoza
On the other hand, the third world countries may not have wanted the Americans to show them their culture and felt it was forced upon them as some people may say.
DeleteImperialism was positive and negative in the US. Many things that it caused can have many different opinions from todays era. A positive economic impact would be that the panama canal was made and many regions had benefit from it. Imperial cant be justified because there will always be a country wanting to have more power. But imperialism is still around and its more noticeable now than back then.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this but there was also thw during lust for power even before imperialism.
DeleteImperialism to the modern individual can be seen as built on the foundation of racism. However, at the time, imperialism and the social Darwinist belief was sincere and even religious individuals thought that God had made it possible to be superior. For that reason the U.S. was responsible of other third world nations. The took hold of the Philippines and sought to bring them education and religion. The underlying reason although seemingly obscure was seeking markets for American goods. Imperialism was seeking another frontier another source of raw material and wealth. Colonies like the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico, along with Panama and Hawaii were often burdened with American presence they also benefited by a small portion of education and a new form of civilization. The U.S. gained markets, transportation, and most importantly military bases. They were finally competing with the big bad nations of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe public might have been fooled to believe that there was nohing but positivety to come from I.perialism. It did have its benefits like the panama canal but it also had its disadvantages. One was just the spare lust for power. It played a pivotal role in the way society would place its view on upcoming issues. There was a want for more lk and and goods.
ReplyDeleteI agree that imperialism fooled the public into thinking that this was a positive thing. Because of the way they understood social darwinism they thought they had to go around and help others to be like them when others would be fine on their own.
DeleteI agree with you that imperialism had its downs but without it the united states would have never become a world super power. The united states strived to be top condender and if it ment stiking down with an iron fist let it be done.
DeleteHere are some American Imperialism positive effects,There were new crops; tools and farming methods, which helped, increase food production. These changes meant less death to smaller colonies, and overall improve the state of living. They now could live longer and have better sanitation compared to the earlier imperialism. Some negative effects were that colonies were put to work as cheap labor. They had no freedom, had to do what the mother country said since it has so much towering power over them, they were exploited and were taken advantage of.
ReplyDeletei agree with you marlon because the farmers had a new way of tools to farm it made it easier for them. but they still got paid very little cheap labor
DeleteImperialism is something that has been around for many years. Americans saw this as a way to teach their morals and beliefs to the people in countries that needed help. However by having the Americans go into other 3rd world countries, it brought hate from those who they were helping since they were destroying their beliefs and practices.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the US was soon hated because of all the "help" they did. Foreign nations did not want to be controlled and did not want to follow Americas beliefs. They became angered once they saw that the US was trying to take over and make their nation just like the US.
DeleteAmerican imperialism was positive in helping other nations become like the US. Although it was a lot of work for the US, it was supposed to be something good for foreign nations because the US was teaching them how to be democratic. The US also wanted to be an example in order to stay away from communist outbreaks by other nations. However, being entangled in wars was a negative consequence. Because they were so involved with foreign nations, they were brought into their wars which the US did not want.
ReplyDeleteI agree. A negative consequence was that their involvement led to the U.S. being in foreign nation wars which they did not want. However I disagree that the positive consequence was that they helped other nations. Because they were so involved with foreign nations, America was entangled in wars. Also, even though they were trying to be an example, they ended up enforcing American beliefs and tried to control them which the foreign nations didn't like.
DeleteAmerican imperialism had its ups and downs. There were plenty of positive outcomes, although there were more negatives. The Panama canal was a positive outcome of American imperialism. The creation of this helped the world not just America. It increased the world economy and benefited people in the region. One of the many negative outcomes was destroying the social part of this. Many countries, if not all, were terrorised.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteAlso, one negative outcome was the US wanted to be known as the worlds "Cop" before the war but after the war the us wanted to be more isolated because of the imense amount of money wasted in WW1. foreign nations saw that US wasn't getting involved so that caused a little tension because they expected the US to have their back.
DeleteThere are positive and negative parts to American Imperialism. I think that the thought of being a "good neighbor" to other countries is one of the positive ways to look at American Imperialism as many other students have said, but another is the fast growing industrial economy. The Panama Canal addition is also a plus as well as the regional gain. However, there are negative ways to American Imperialism. Such as...the forcing of the United States' culture onto the third world countries that were fine living the way they were, it supports the idea of Manifest Destiny, and American Imperialism left the people powerless in some parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jennifer. The U.S wanted to be the world's "cop" as other students have mentioned before. The U.S felt they needed to keep the world safe for democracy, of course. The Panama Canal was, indeed, a positive contribution to American Imperialism. The Panama Canal not only helped America, but increased the world's economy.
DeleteWe can put the blame of Imperialism on the misinterpretation of Social Darwinism, Imperial Powers believe they must get ahead by taking over foreign and 3rd world countries or get left behind. Some negative side effects of Imperialism is that the country they take over will lose their traditions they once had to become "Civilized". America STRONGLY believes that they are helping the countries they take over.
ReplyDeleteAmericans saw imperialism as a way to spread their culture to other parts of the world in hopes of "civilizing" any territories they acquired. As a result of imperialism, the regions acquired became "civilized" and could be utilized for any resources needed.
ReplyDeleteHowever, a negative side ot imperialism is that the regions were never fully granted independence or granted any of the same rights as American citizens. They were only being used for their resources, and then they were just left.
i agree with you completely on this! Some countries even revolted against the U.S government to stop the inequality and harsh treatment they were receiving. The Philippines for example, were expecting freedom after the Spanish- American war but were angry to see they would only be controlled by yet another country.
DeleteImperialism has brought nothing but negativity to america. American wanted to be the best in anything and everything. Everything they did was right and everyone had to follow their example. There is no one to blame for this whole concept because competition is always going to be there. Americas intentions were good but their understandings of social Darwinism was all wrong which resulted in documents like "our country" and "white mans burden" who educated the public that they needed to help out the savages of the world to be more american.
ReplyDeleteImperialism wasnt all bad for everyone because panama gained some good out of this with its independence and its newly built canal. It also let us become the world power of the world so our popularity and respect was increased.
DeleteEconomically, the imperialist era was a case of ends justified the means in positive growth. The building of the panama canal was a major staple in American advancement. By creating an easier route to ship American goods, this brought in much more money. However the growing problem of monopolies gave America the image of an unstable government.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the creation of the Panama Canal created an easier and faster route for ships for the U.S. Also that monopolies were making the government seem a bit unstable. While there was an increase in the profit made in trading while the Canal was active.
DeleteAmerican imperialism affected politics in that a) It helped extend American naval power all over the globe and b) The extension in naval bases also increased The United States’ power- often claiming to use “Big Stick”. However, American imperialism came with the ideas of Democracy for all- even those who do not want it. This would lead to some countries’ hate for America. One of the primary causes for American Imperialism was the need for Americans to teach other underdeveloped countries the American way of life, or else Germany or Britain will teach them theirs. Rudyard Kipling can be blamed for American imperialism because he was basically urging Americans to become imperialist like Britain.
ReplyDeleteA negative consequence due to American Imperialism was that America was too involved with foreign nations. For being so involved, they were entangled in wars an conflict that they did not want to be in. They also didn't have the best relationships with some of the foreign countries. A positive consequence would be the isolation phase that America went through. Because they got an "selfish" attitude shift, they were able to focus more on themselves and recovering from the Great Depression. By focusing on just themselves, they felt as if they didn't have to worry about being entangled into any future wars.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Imperialism refers to the economic, military, and cultural influence of the U.S on other countries. Americans were the ones influencing the other parts of the world. A positive consequence was how we helped Panama gain their independece from Columbia. A negitive would have to be the fact that the countries we help get free from the tight grasp of other nations, would not have the same right as the US had
ReplyDeleteI agree that a negative effect of American imperialism was the difference of the countries helped and the country that helped them such as U.S.
DeleteImperialism in the U.S positive consequences were endless if only in perception as an American. After World War I, we became a world power. We rose to power as we wanted and made everyday life for the common citizen that much easier. The building of the Panama canal, not only aiding our economic endeavors, put us on the good side of other countries also allowing them to make transportation easier for trade and other. The negative effects endured were the mass murders on Native Americans, and also a sense of arrogance we gained with accomplishing so much being an underdog.
ReplyDeleteRight and also to add to negatives the act of placing high taxes once a country was overran put alot of citizens out for money.
DeleteAnother negative consequence would be how the US did acquire land: with the blood of Native Americans and the backs of Africans. There was a hint of hatred and terrorism, too.
DeleteLead to construction of the Panama Canal which was a benefit for the world and the people of panama. Lead to the independence of Panama, Philippines and Cuba.Japan was opened to the outside world. "White Man's Burden" brought civilization to undeveloped areas. The annexation of Hawaii and the battle against spain for puerto rico can be seen as negatives.
ReplyDeleteThe panama canal was a huge benefit to the nation!
DeleteYes, the Panama Canal was a huge benefit because it was a shorter and faster trail to travel by instead of the Cape Horn route.
DeletePositive effects of American imperialism is that after WWI we were the major world power, led to the construction of the panama canal, led to the independence of panama, and significantly increased transportation and communication facilities. Some negative effects of the American imperialism is that it made other countries live in the ways that america saw as perfect and that the idea of manifest destiny was expanded more.
ReplyDeleteexactly, like i said before, we gained a sense of arrogance, countries HAD to follow our example because we were so much "better"
DeleteImperialism is he art of taking over ones country resources politically socially and economically. It has its benefits such as war profiteering and looting natural resources.the negative out come could mean the loss of ones country culturally. Like the language and entire background could be left behind. The leader if ruled badly could tetminate all orgins of a country.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Imperialism had both negative and positive effects. A negative effect Imperialism had was that the U.S was trying to help foreign nations and show them how to be democratic, but being an example to foreign nations brought the US into wars which the US didn't want to take part of. A good example of a positive effect of American Imperialism would be the creation of the Panama Canal. The Panama canal had a positive effect because it increased the transportation of goods and the interaction/communication between different regions.
ReplyDeleteWell, Imperialism is the belief in empire-building: the policy of extending the rule or influence of a country over other countries or colonies. And well, American Imperialism was thought as helping. For instance, when America decided to intervine with Panama, they outcome was beneficial to both parties involved. America went into Panama to build the Panama Canal, which benefited American trade. And America helped Panama overthrow Columbia's power.
ReplyDeleteHowever, American Imperialism was bad because it dominated a country economically. It [American Imperialism] also influenced countries to lose their own values.
American Imperialism is both a good and bad thing. It all depends on how it was done. A good thing about American Imperialism was that the U.S. wanted to help those foreign countries. It wanted to improve it's government, economy and other things to make the life of it's people better. A downside to this is that the U.S. also wanted to take advantage of the foreign countries' resources. The U.S. believed that it had to "colonize" these countries. They had to teach them right from wrong and control them, which angered the people within the country. The Philippines is an example on how the U.S. tried to help them, but in the end in only brought issues and conflicts with them
ReplyDeleteAmerican Imperialism gave us the chance to live privilieged lives and it helped improve the world's economy. However, it gave our government a feeling of superiority to others.
ReplyDeleteAgreed our country was making alot of changes at this point in time. I beleive so many that it got overwhelmed and started to think it was a lot better than evreybody else.
DeleteAmerican Imperialism made everything worse because people had to much power over others and this caused riots among workers against their bosses. Although one good aspect out of this was that it increased economic welfare because everyone was being taxed on a high scale.
ReplyDeleteThere were both positive and negative affects of american imperialism. The main positive effect was it not only advanced the U.S. but also made us seem more powerful. the negative affects of it were that it was costly and put troops into harms way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Sabrina. It did help advance of the U.S of economy and also the spread of Democracy. Also many lives were lost making the US seem powerful and bringing tensio between each other. By US isolating itself from everyone else, I would consider this as a negative also. Just letting the problems fly by and and not wanting to confront them .
DeleteImperialism wasn't all that great as Americans painted it to be. The race with other great powers blinded them from the damage they were causing the "savages" they were trying to change. Although imperialism expanded land and even opened up new trade routes the tension brought from those countries who did not want nor need any help was a burden for the white man.
ReplyDeleteimperalism was positive and negitive .panic of 1893 was when business idustries had an overexpanded results in over production in goods.it was the worst econmic depressin the united states. the positive effect was that creation of the panama canal and the and also led to the independence of panama.
ReplyDeleteYou cold say that America was kinda being selfish in the fact that they wanted to help out the rest of the world, which was so called helpless and needy, in order to improve their reputation and be known as the "World's Cop." The only thing that we can put blame is on our ancestors because they were the ones who wanted to prove to the rest of the world that in fact we were the best, by not only improving our own nation but in making 3rd world countries more "American." Those third world countries experienced significant changes in their society, but in those changes they experienced both negative and positive changes. A positive change could be in their economy because before we got there, at some places, they didn't even have their own currency, so with our help they went from a "savaged, poor, and broken down society" into a "wealthy, prosperous, and healthy" society. Another positive impact that was made was the introduction to self-government. We were used to a society that had a full running government that could help the people out when the time came, but to us those third world countries were savaged because they did not have a way of order because they had no government, so we took it upon ourselves to liberate them and introduce them to democracy and finally a way of self-government. A negative impact would have to be the change if their culture as a whole because we had to say goodbye withe the old in order to say hello to the new, the new better way, the right way, the American way. Their culture and their own way of life was nothing but a fossil covered in their new found wealth and life that they have gained.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Imperialism was something that Americans took upon themselves to prove to the rest of the world that they could and would help out the needy and helpless, and this is evident through the pieces stated above.
I disagree because American didnt help other nations just for them to seem like they were almighty and the best. But in order for them to gain allies and to seem that we could be as one togethere in the world.
Deleteimperialism in america had both positives and negatives. A positive was the panamal canal since it helped alot with trades. Also railroads and other great ideas also helped with the economical trade of the country by tranportation.
ReplyDeleteThe panama canal causes boats to be able to travel though from ocean to ocean without having to go around South America.
DeleteImperialism had both positive and negative effects on the U.S. while one of the things that lead to having a more simpler future would be the taking in of Hawaii. This created many opportunities which could become a strategically useful resource. While on the other hand was the taking in of Puerto Rico which wanted to be its own country and wouldn't want the U.S. over them. This created many changes in the cultures of the newly taken countries with new forms of culture and politics.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Imperialism had both positive and negative effects on U.S. A Positive effect was that America was able to expand, with "White man's burden" and "Americanize" the places it was able to reach through the spread of Democracy without being to cruel about it. The One Negative is the conflict it brough brought between the U.S and other countries. The friction between Cuba and Spain was great.
ReplyDeleteYes, i agree that Africa is still affected till this day. There is still so much controversy from the culture and ethnicity
ReplyDeleteOne positive thing about imperialism is that it turned us into a major world leader, as the US had wanted. One negative is that now the US believes that it is superior to all other countries, making the US think that they can invade other countries because we are superior.
ReplyDeleteone positive effect caused by american imperialism was the building of the panama canal, it made trade easier which benefited our economy. One negative effect caused by american imperialism was that the US gained a sense of arrogance that they were better then everyone, whatever they did was the right way and that everyone was obligated to follow our example.
ReplyDeleteA positive effect of Imperialism in America was the idea of bringing civilization to undeveloped countries and a higher standard of living for those living in the area. A negative effect of American imperialism was the tainting of countries that were barely becoming developed.
ReplyDeleteyes, i agree. the positive is the development nd the negative is the lack of freedom the smaller countries had.
Deleteokay, to start off, imperialism is when one mother country takes over a smaller country socially, politically and economically. A positive effect is the production the country has once imperialism took place, the mother country started to build canals, roads and railroads.A negetive effect is the way the smalle4r countries had no freedom, and had to listen to the mother country.
