Greetings History Minions!
This week I have two similar questions for you. Select one and impress your classmates with detail and historical fact.  :)
You should contribute NEW information to the discussion, and you should do so with your reply as well.

Option 1)  Analyze the effects of the Vietnam War on ONE of the following: the presidency, youth aged 18 to 35, or Cold War diplomacy.

Option 2)  Analyze the ways in which the events and trends of the 1970s diminished the nation's economic power and international influence, and challenged Americans' confidence in both.
Amazing, I know!  Happy blogging!
(Option 1) The effects of the Vietnam war on the cold war diplomacy was that the Vietnamese army makes the United States army look bad in that we struggle to fight them although they are an "inferior" army. The US spent a lot of money on the war and the northern Vietnamese army still was doing better than the US, when the US withdrew from Vietnam, the north was able to take over the south.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war also brought a lot of Americans to doubt in the government during the time.
DeleteThat is very true. The US was in over its head at this point. The Vietnamese had nothing to loose in the war.
DeleteThey did all of this to stop communism from spreading, but in the end, it didnt really matter.
DeleteThis money spending is still in effect today. America is still the "World's cop" as Ana said.
DeleteThe Vietnam War caused major tension between society, separting the democratic party who wanted to keep the war going and the rest of the public to wanted so badly for it to end. Because of so many casualties occuring and not enough volunteers, the U.S. had to issue a draft. Protests began to erupt at major colleges throught the nation. Also, the people could see the drastic change the country began to undergo because of the fear in not being able to win, therefore losing trust in the government.
ReplyDeleteThere was a huge distrust in the government after the Watergate revelations of the Nixon's administration officials. It ended with Nixon's resignation and the incarceration of 43 of Nixon's administrative officials.
DeleteAlso the distrust grew with the Kent state massacre causing much of america to begin to dislike Nixon and the Vietnam War
DeleteThe withdrawal of the US caused them to seem weak for not being able to fight off such a small, weak country. The government seemed as if it would fail, the unnecessary casualties that could have been prevented, caused it to make it appear as if it were true.
DeleteIn the 1970s the economic power was diminished with prices inflated on oil. There was war fought for the oil because there was so little of it.Also that U.S citizens didn't bother messing or caring for the inflation prices because the Great Depression had just passed.
ReplyDelete-U.S History
Also much of of the political rhetoric on both sides painted the opposition as enemies of the "American wa." Several confrontations on college campuses heightened political tensions.
DeleteAgree. Some other problems were energy shortage, high inflation, and high unemployment. The energy shortage occurred because of a worldwide oil shortage. Nations around the world started to conserve their non-renewable oil supplies in hopes to have some still available in the near future.
DeleteOne other factor that diminished the United States' economic power was the first ever trade deficit that came to be under the Nixon administration. In the 1970's, the United States began to import more goods than they exported. Consequently, this caused inflation and debased the value of the American dollar in foreign markets.
DeleteAlso, the U.S. international influence diminished with the passage of the War Powers Resolution of 1973 in order to prevent any future president from involving the military in another undeclared war. The War Powers Resolution requires the president to obtain congregational approval for any troop commitment lasting longer than 60 days.
Delete(Option 2) During Nixon's presidency, the economy worsened, going through a period of combined recession-inflation that economists called stagflation. Nixon attmepted to combat the nation's economic woes with a number of interventionist measures including a price-and-wage freeze and increased federal spending. None of his efforts produced their intended results. plitically, american society remained divided between the conservatives and the progressives.
ReplyDeleteThe inflation caused by the little amount of oil. Society divided because the Great Depression
Deleteit didn't help that Johnson previously received a blank check to fund the Vietnam war and then the pentagon papers were published
DeleteLyndon Johnson was removed from office and the Nixon era began. At the center of these vietnam war stood President Lyndon B. Johnson, who inherited the White House following the November 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The circumstances of Johnson’s ascendance to the Oval Office left him little choice but to implement several unrealized Kennedy initiatives, particularly in the fields of economic policy and civil rights. Lyndon B.Johnson was equally committed to winning the fight against the Communist insurgency in Vietnam—a fight that Kennedy had joined during his thousand days in office.
ReplyDeleteShortly after 13 years into the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon assumed the presidency and was left to direct American involvement in the Vietnam War. At this point, the Vietnam War had become very unpopular with the American public, especially since a draft was enacted, many American lives were lost, and American forces were on the losing end of the conflict. By 1973, faith in the American government began to dwindle because of unsuccessful support in the ongoing war, placing Nixon in a position that demanded the withdrawal of American troops from South Vietnam. Partially inclined by public opinion about the Vietnam War, Nixon agreed to evacuate American troops in 1973 after signing the Paris Peace Accords with both Vietnamese parties, North and South Vietnam. However, after the withdrawal of American troops and the signing of the Paris Peace Accords, North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam once again in 1975, and without American troops to support South Vietnam, Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, fell to Communist North Vietnam. Ergo, South Vietnam assimilated with North Vietnam and together formed the country of Vietnam. Consequently, the role of being president was now more closely attached to the responsibility of being the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The president's actions during the Vietnam War determined both the credibility and respect from the American people.
ReplyDeleteAfter this Nixon's presidency went down hill. Where his administration officials tried to cover-up their involvement with the Watergate incident which led to his resignation.
DeleteThe Vietnam war caused the us citizens to doubt their winning of the cold war when they are seen as un-superior. The Vietnam war caused the a shift in the cold war and causes the US to sign a peace treaty with the soviet union and china and forces Vietnam to join in the treaty by expanding bombing sections surrounding Vietnam. In the process of the signing of the Nixon Doctrine, Nixon makes sure to state that they would not be doing majority of the fighting at war when a country is at risk of being taken over by communism.
ReplyDeleteAgreed but also remember to state that we lost people to a war that really wasn't ours. We were just fighting it to avoid the spread of communism like the Korean War but in the end our struggled failed to give us democratic security.
DeleteAmericans also learned they can't win the war with Soviet Union, so they eventually turned into propagandors.
DeleteIt was also said that the U.S turned to propaganda in order to aid them with their issues of insecurities.
DeleteAna M.
Americans lost a lot of money and men during the war. The army went over to Vietnam wanting to stop communism from spreading and ended up losing its battle. Americans were afraid and this only caused for the communist threat to grow.
DeleteThe Vietnam war affected many of Americas youth causing them to question authority to the extent that in 1964 at University of California the Free Speech Movement launched a protest on authority. The youth strongly distrusted the government authority because of our involvement with the Vietnam war and the drafts."trust no one over thirty" was one of the popular saying that the American youth would say.
ReplyDeleteThere were many effects of the Vietnam war that effected those between ages of 18 through 35. Many young Americans that came from poor backgrounds joined the army . There were around 58,000 killed and 30,000 wounded from the Vietnam war. Another effect was that there was an increase protesting. One of the protests was the march on Washington, which was seen as one of the largest political rallies in U.S history.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, the american people between 18 and 35 were also drafted into the war, which they didn't want to be a part of.
DeleteOption 1-
ReplyDeleteThe youth showed their concern through campus rallies,anti-war demonstrations, they strongly opposed the war taking place in which their loved ones were dying. United they created a "counterculture" which stood against middle class society norms.
I agree that the youth had opposed the war in Vietnam, and they show how much the way was a mistake for those involved in it. Though youth had to speak up about the reasons why the war should of been resolved.
DeleteMany people believed that the war in Vietnam was a war we, the U.S should not have been fighting and people were extremely happy when Nixon withdrew the troops from Vietnam. We lost more troops here than in the Korean war which made the president unpopular among protesting people.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Nixon's "Vietnamization" did make people happy at the fact that their friends and families were finally coming back, but the fact that we were over there to begin with and the president essentially spent a bunch of money we didn't even have made the public very angry.
DeleteThe Presidency
ReplyDeleteAmerican citizens lost faith in the government for refusing to withdraw forces from Vietnam. Both Republicans and Democrats help the war making the public hate both. President gets a blank check to waste money we don't have. The pentagon papers are published and expose executive corruption
To elaborate more on the issue of the economy, the U.S. was increasing the national debt. The U.S. was spending money on the war that we didn't have anymore. Also, the oil shortage caused prices to shoot up which affected the western economies greatly. This led the U.S. To fall into stagflation due to the high inflation and recession occurring. Another issue was the high demand with low supply for jobs, cars and houses. Since veterans were returning from war, unemployment rates increased.
DeleteDuring the 1972 elections Richard Nixon and George McGovern were running for president, McGovern was antiwar so the people voted for Nixon, even though the people already knew about the watergate scandal Nixon was still elected president. The liberals went wild about the decision and used the scandal to get Nixon to resign. Ever since he resigned most American’s gave up. This then caused for congress and Gerald Ford to let N. Vietnam overrun S. Vietnam without any opposition, because of this action Ford wasn’t reelected. When “lifesaver” Jimmy Carter was in charge he withdrew us from the cold war and and did absolutely nothing to oppose the SU who was sponsoring wars of National Liberation in SEA.He then watched when SU deployed missiles to intimidate NATO, and actively helped to destabilize Iran and Nicaragua. Our economy on the other hand wasn't so great and we were then the laughing stock of the world, but Reagan promised to give us back our dignity, and he did.
ReplyDeleteRichard Nixon's presidency didn't end well. After evacuating the his troops with signing the peace treaty. The powers of the president were diminished. Richard Nixon last straw was the watergate incident which led to his resignation. Nixon made his first mistake by promising to evacuate our troops, but troop numbers stayed high and eventually expanded the war with Cambodia and Laos.
ReplyDeleteAlso due to this effect for helping the rest of the world in war our own economy was horrible compared to the rest and caused the world to judge us.
DeleteNixon showed great intentions but failed badly. People were to take action for his faults. there were tape recording of the conversations Nixon had with Senate Watergate committee many of the conversations were illegal going-ons. Nixon was forced to resign.
DeleteThe Vietnam War caused major tension among society back in the states. People saw it as an unnecessary war to fight. After the U.S. witnessed the number of losses and the lack of volunteerism , it began to issue the draft. Of course the youth was at an uproar with this policy seeing as they were the main ones effected. Soon major protests began in society.
ReplyDeleteWith so much for peace going on soon American Society grew a "who gives a crap " attitude and change the old traditional lifestyle of Americans to a whole new level of rebellion.
DeleteThey saw this as a loss of time and money.
DeleteDuring the Vietnam War, youth from 18 to 35 were greatly affected. Throughout the war, there was over 50,000 american youths that were killed fighting and even more that were injured and left with psychological issues. After having more drafts announced to be able to continue fighting, draft resistance reached its peak. Many Americans became anti-drafts and protested against it. This age group of the youth were also some of the main ones participating in civil rights movement. For example, the March on Washington had many of the youth attacked by dogs, fire hoses and police while protesting. The Kent State shooting was also a protest specifically against the draft for Cambodia Campaign during the Vietnam war.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds familiar
Delete(Option 1) The Vietnam War is the war that many people consider to be the greatest U.S. defeat. Indeed, the U.S acts caused the Vietnamese people to rebel against them, since the U.S was trying to Americanize, Vietnam in a way that benefitted them the most disregarding the Vietnamese citizens. Now more importantly, the U.S government was lying to the citizens that the they were winning the war, when really many American lives were being lost. As the war ground on the draft claimed more young Americans, opposition to the war grew. Protest rallies grew larger and more frequent, and more and more young men either ignored their draft notices or fled to a foreign country to avoid military service, many went to Canada. As a result the government lost creditability and the American citizens no longer trusted them.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam War was the big turning point of the Cold War. The U.S feared that their military was not strong enough. People believed that new strategies and techniques were needed if they wanted to defeat the USSR. The internal insecurity that the U.S was experiencing at the time encouraged the Soviet Union to impose itself around the world which quickened the process of its defeat.
ReplyDeleteAna M.
Agreed. However, The Vietnam War and the Break in of the Democratic Party Offices at Watergate also had a HUGE effect on the Presidency by decreasing it's power, and making Congress more powerful.
DeleteAlso the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. decreased America's confidence.
DeleteThe Vietnam War really had an effect on the Presidency. The Vietnam War along with the Watergate event increased the power of Congress and decreased the power of the President. This happened because Nixon and LBJ abused the power of the Presidency by, LBJ lying about the Gulf of Tonkin incident and Nixon covering up the break in of the Democratic Party Offices at Watergate. Therefore, the Congress took away some of the Presidency's power.
ReplyDeletei agree with you completely and dont forget that the role of president also came with a huger burden because of having to lead a country through a tough time.
DeleteIn the 1970's the US's withdrawal from the Vietnam war caused a lowering in american's confidence in international influence, it seemed as if the US had lost the war to a small country and was unable to stop the spread of communism.
ReplyDeleteThis is true, but Americans also felt like they shouldn't have been in the war in the first place.
DeleteDuring the 1970s was the time when blacks, women, native Americans, gays and lesbians continued to to fight foe equal rights. They wanted civil rights. Many laws and reforms were demanded from this. Women kept on fighting and involved themselves more in politics and began to further more their education. African Americans also had leaders among themselves who became members of congress. There were also ongoing protestants against the war with Vietnam. Many things altered these events one of being the recession of 1973-1975. This recession was the end of the economic boom caused by ww2. There was stagflation high unemployment and high inflation! The cause of this was the 1973 oil crisis. Nixon showed faith and good intentions of the federal government.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam War affected the population on the youth between the ages 18 and 35 pretty bad. More than 58,000 Americans were killed about another 300,000 wounded and countless others were mentally changed by the war. This decreased the amount of people able to expand the U.S. population.
ReplyDeleteNot many young people wanted to volunteer to serve in the war, so the draft was put into action. The youth felt helpless and retaliated the only way the felt they could, through rallies and antiwar movements.
DeleteThey also fought for the 26th amendment because a lot of 18 year olds (pretty much all of them) felt it was unfair that they had to go fight in a war and have no say in the matter.
DeleteI agree that the Vietnam War did change many young peoples lives through protesting and opposing the continue of the war. The result of injuries that those suffered because of their beliefs was something that was cause by the government.
DeleteDuring the Vietnam war the youth population was the one mostly affected and rose against it. Students all over the U.S believe there was no good reason for the U.S to be involve in the Vietnam War.Youth protests during the 1960's changed the way many Americans viewed the Vietnam War. During the 1960's american society grew a "who give's a crap " attitude. This was the rise of the counterculture. The counterculture involved the young generation standing against the traditional values of middle-class society . Their manifested their rebellion in many ways such as long hair , rock music, fornication, drugs , riots, to name a few. This was due to gain attention for antiwar demonstrations. This mixture of hippie, pop and drug culture was a big change in American society and still remains today.
ReplyDeleteYes i agree, Even college students were a huge part in the antiwar society. Did you know on campuses across the country, students held marches, teach ins, strikes, and other forms of civil disobedience to show their protest of the war.
DeletePresident Johnson and Nixon were two of the four presidents whose actions weakened the presidential position during the Vietnam War. President Johnson believed that the solution was to send more troops, which was one of his failures because many troops were not able to differentiate between the enemy and a villager. President Nixon was certain that by withdrawing all U.S military in the war through his "Vietnamization" plan that South Vietnam would become strong enough to fight on their own. He spent a lot of money on strengthening their army, supplying them with better weapons, and training. When the South began their attack on the North, their attempts failed horribly. Nixon was too focused on improving South Viets military that in the end war expenses damaged the U.S economy.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, Samantha. Because of the actions that were taken by these two presidents, the people were starting to lose hope in them. For example, The Watergate Scandal showed many hidden secrets that Nixon had and did not share with the public, that just gave the president a bad name. The president's ability to rule was being questioned, all caused by the Vietnam War.
DeleteI find it interesting that no one mentioned the 26th Amendment by name. This amendment is directly related to the Vietnam War and student protesters. Young men aged 18 could be drafted to fight--and possibly die--in a war they did not support, but the voting age was 21. In 1971 the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18.
ReplyDeletehttp://westlawinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/old-enough-to-fight-button.gif
(Option 1) The vietnam war was, in the eyes of some, unnecessary and was also very costly. The US sent many troops to fight against them and with this we saw the drafting which allowed the government to "draft" or take any 18 BOYS to go to the war.
ReplyDeleteI agree because not many viewed a reason or meaning to fight in the first place.
DeleteMany protested aginst the draft also because as said by juan they did not see any reason to fight in the first place since it wasn't our fight really .
DeleteTheir were many protest also because of the fact that they were allowed to go fight for their country but not allowed to vote for their rights. That is why they passed the 26th amendment.
Delete(Option 1)The Vietnam war greatly effected presidency, and not in a good way. While Lyndon B. Johnson was in office during the war his power only diminished and the power of congress increased. When Johnson lied about the Gulf of Tonkin incident it caused USA to get into a complex situation in Vietnam, but ended when the peace treaty was signed in 1973.
ReplyDeleteMany young Americans did not agree with the Vietnam war, and they showed their concern though rallies and antiwar demonstrations. Their efforts made no difference, it seemed, so they joined the thousands of other young people who shared their opinions and created the "counterculture". The "counterculture" was characterized by drugs, sex, long hair, and rock and roll, as showcased at Woodstock.
ReplyDeleteThe "counterculture" fought for world peace causing it to spread across the United States and the United Kingdom.
DeleteThe Vietnam war drew Johnson back a lot from his Great Society plan. Due to the fact that we couldn't afford to look weak to the communists Johnson drew funds for the Vietnam war from education etc. It really hindered Johnson from accomplishing everything he wanted to during his presidency.
ReplyDeleteJohnson also called it an unwinnable war, but entered anyway.
DeleteJohnson's chief mistake was trying to fight two wars at once-the war on poverty and the Vietnam war- leading him to fail at both. He withdrew from the presidential in large part because his association with the Vietnam war turned many Americans against him, including within his own party. Johnson's withdrawal opened the field to a third candidate, Vice president Hubert Humphrey. This affected the presidency after the Vietnam war.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war affected the youth society because most of them were sent of to the war and many did not come back. They were cut down in their lives and the ones that didnt got to the war began making protests against the government because they viewed the war as pointless nonsense.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war diminished the power of the president. Congress was starting to take some of its powers away because legislators and representatives felt that the president, especially Johnson and Nixon, was abusing his power by taking drastic decisions that dealt with the Vietnam War. The presidency was also affected by the Vietnam War because the public started to lose trust in the president. The decisions that were being by them were mostly affecting the country negatively. They led to the US losing the war, communism had spread to South Vietnam. That gave the president a bad name.
ReplyDeleteJohnson could have been known for so much more! The war cost him his great society and with it his legacy.
DeleteTrue, the people lost faith in their leaders. Only bad things can come of that.
Johnson entered and "unwinnable war" in order to stop the spread of communism, and the government spent a lot of money on this war but instead after a while we pulled out of the war and the north took over the south. Thus giving Johnson a very bad name for making us enter the war and costing many lives.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war drafted many young people ages from 18-35. The only reason they had to draft was because not many people wanted to go to war. Many protested agains this draft because many where unprepared for their sons and husbands to be taking away . So many people where drafted they were not trained right so many where killed in battle others where wounded. When their soldiers came home where phyiscaly changed but really seeing people dye caused them to be mentally changed. They came home different basically.
ReplyDeleteThey also protested the draft because they found the war unethical with the US soldiers having to kill innocent women and children from the paranoia that they would be bombs.
DeleteAfter evacuating the his troops with signing the peace treaty for Vietnam, Nixon's presidency was more on the bad side towards the end. The refusal to hand over the tapes from the Watergate Scandal did not help at all either. He ended up resigning because of that.
ReplyDeleteOne of the big effects of the Vietnam War was that of men ages 18 to 35. During the Vietnam war at the age of 18 men were allowed to be drafted to go fight in the war. However, they weren't allowed to vote til they were 21 years of age. It was in no way fair that men that were fighting in the war, but under the age of 21 could not vote. The men were upset because how could they not vote for political elections, but yet be able to risk their lives for their country. Because of this problem we have the 26th amendment. The 26th amendment states that the United States does not have the right to set the voting age no higher than 18.
ReplyDeleteThis also led to more protests and riots.
DeleteI Agree with you Sabrina and Joe.And with protest and riots there was urge uprising into trying to stop all the drafting that was being made. There were mother's veiwing news and praying their sons will make it home back. With News being cast throughout the nation more and more protest were being made.
Deletethe vietnam war had a huge role on the presidency because no one actually wanted to have to deal with the problems that the nation was having but someone had to step up. no man wanted the pressure of deciding the fate of a country and the actions that would have to be taken because they would be criticized and hated if what they did or said was wrong so not many people actually thought that they could handle the presidency.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the pressure. Many of the Preidents during the time of the Cold War and Vietnam war had a lot of pressure on them. It was too much for them to handle which caused them to try and do stupid things which ended up as scandals
DeleteThe Vietnam War created major tension between America and the rest of the government. Protests began to erupt at major colleges throught the nation. Also, the people lost trust in the government because of president Nixon and how the rich people ruled the government.
ReplyDeleteJohnson also lied to the people once exposed by the media he did not run for reelection
Deletei agree! events like the Kent State Massacre which created even more tension between the American people and it's government. This event showed that the Government cannot be trusted.
Delete18-35 the beginning of someones life. The draft or "the lottery" was implemented during the Vietnam war which ment that males between the ages of 18-35 could be summoned to war. This was very controversial especially when fighting a war that most of the population was against. Veterans upon arrival after the end of the war were alienated.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam War was a time of embarrassment and disbelief. The American people were being drafted to a cause that they were not thrilled about. There was a loss of patriotism and support. However much the American people hated communism, it was simply not enough to put their men and sons in danger. Scandals led to distrust with the government and it was a time of ill memories for America.
ReplyDeleteVietnam war drew attention away from LBJ's great society plan. His one true love was placed second when fighting against communismn, americans greatest fear. So much money was spent on a war that many thought would not be won. Many american men lost their lives and also a lot of young boys given that the 26th amendment allowed young men age of 18 to be drafted to a war that could possibly kill them. Many of the young men ran to canada to avoid being drafted.
ReplyDeleteMen who ran away from the draft were later pardoned, funny fact is that one of our previous presidents was a run away also. :p
DeleteThe Vietnam War affected the youth of the time with that of the draft. They were force to go to be randomly selected to see if they had to go to the war. Those that didn't want to were either arrested or ran to Canada. The ones that were sent of to fight were scarred mentally from the Vietnamese tactics of using women and children as bomb. And were treated like dirt when came home because of their actions in Nam.
ReplyDeleteThe youth at the time were affected by the Vietnam War by the draft. The way the draft affected the age group was firstly by sending them to Vietnam where a lot of them died or came back with mental problems. This led to the youths becoming more politically active by protesting the war and the draft. This also led them to later on protest alongside for peoples civil rights.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam War had some effects on The Cold War Diplomacy. Russians supported north Vietnam and claimed if any Russian supply ships they would declare war on the U.S. This would have sparked the Cold War into WW3. And Tensions would have uprised greatly.Leading into having to draft unfairly more men.
ReplyDeleteYes tensions were tight, and Russia was waiting on any little thing to turn the cold war into WW3.
DeleteThe Vietnam War and Watergate diminished the power of the President and increased the power of Congress. LBJ lied about the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and got the USA into a quagmire in Vietnam, which ended when the peace treaty was signed in 1973. It really ended when the USA gave up on South Vietnam. President Richard Nixon covered up what he knew about the break in of Democratic Party Offices at the Watergate Hotel in 1972 and was forced to resign in 1974. LBJ and Richard Nixon, abused the power of the Presidency and it made the people of the US not trust on it's on government. There was many scandals dealing with the Vietnam War
ReplyDeletethis is very true i forgot about the watergate scandal and how it increased the power of congress. This time in history there was alot of faith lost in the executive branch of govt
DeleteThe vietnam war cost a lot of youths lives. Given that the 26th ammendment allowed a draft for young men 18+, many young men were taken out to a war that they tought wasnt ours to fight. During the vietnam war the US had a lot of young men running to Canada to avoid being drafted.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war affected many of Americas youth causing them to question authority to the extent of the Free Speech Movement. The youth strongly distrusted the governments authority because of our involvement with the Vietnam war and the drafts. Like a popular quote you heard from the youth 'Trust no one over 30' is what code they went by.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the the Free Speech Movement? Is it relatable to the 1st amendment? If so, then I do agree with your post, Doug. Because many youth were FORCED to fight in a war in which they simply didn't want to or they didn't support. Despite their efforts in saying they didn't wanna fight, they eventually had to, which diminishes their 1st amendment.
DeleteThe Vietnam War caused many people to lack faith in the president. The United States was spending large amounts of many for the war and was not making any progress in winning the war. People began to think that the president didn't know what he was doing and began losing faith. It wasn't until Nixon's "Vietnamization" that troops were finally being pulled out of Vietnam. Vietnam fell to Communism, making it seem as though the US did the war for no reason, leaving people to blame the president for it.
ReplyDeleteThe Vietnam war was thought to be a very pointles war. people lost all faith in the president. We couldnt understand why we were fighting in a war that wasnt our own. We were sending over young men to fight that couldnt even vote. and most died...Nixon was thought to be the hero of this time because he pulled the troops out of Southern Vietnam
ReplyDeleteLyndon B. Johnson, a strong supporter of the domino theory, reacted to the conflict in Vietnam with little interest. It wasn't until the demand for US involvement from the US military that President Johnson began to get more involved. Once the President's presence was more prominent in Vietnam, the American people started to react. Eventually, the involvement of the US in Vietnam had depleted any chance Johnson had of being re-elected for another term.
ReplyDeleteIn the Vietnam War their was a challenge in the effect of the communist on the Vietnamese. In the prevention of the spread of communism Vietnam was mainly corrupted because of Ho Chi Minh who was involved in the control of the communist in Vietnam. He wanted the French and other foreigners to leave Vietnam and to allow it to become something controlled by Communism. This did cause trouble while there was going to be a diplomacy in the country of Vietnam.
ReplyDeleteIn the 1970's there was much that would cause a feeling of dread by Americans that felt a change in the nation. One of these things was Hurricane Celia which caused 500 million in damages in Texas and left many casualties. The idea of space exploration peaked many Americans minds and others around the world. There was also the increase of the nations population becoming more than 205 million.
ReplyDelete(Option 1)4 presidents served their terms during the Vietnam War. Each president gives the other more and worse problems related to US activities in Vietnam, than they already had. And the president is the face of the US and the US government. Citizens started to lose faith in the government.
ReplyDelete
