After careful analysis of your Gilded Age documents, I want you to consider what the key problems of the era really were. Cities had more to worry about than garbage collection and unsafe drinking water, although these problems were symptomatic of larger issues.

What were the worst economic, social, and political issues facing our Gilded Age cities? Select one (or more) for each category and explain WHY you chose that problem.
The worst issues facing gilded age cities were social and political problems. Big bussiesses thought that applaing darwis theory of survival of the forest allowed them to think they were reasoned o cheat and extort those around them. Following this they broke funds asclly too money right from the governments nose and cheated people out of their pay making n eonomicl problem in the united states,so much that the government had to take out a loan from one of the rich bussines men of the gilded age.
ReplyDeleteThe rapid urbanization of cities led to the need of more housing for incoming immigrants. The growing population resulted in the placement of countless individuals in crime and disease ridden communities called slums. Political machine bosses would often mislead the cities population them public works projects and social services in exchange for their votes. Most immigrants lived in poverty and were often robbed of their working wages as well from the companies they worked for.
ReplyDeleteThe worst issues facing the glided age was a sense that government-enabled political machines intervened in the economy and the resulting favoritism, biberyy, inefficiency, waste, and corruption were having negative consequences.
ReplyDeleteThen economic issue brought up cases cheating in the economy. Many of the powerful bussisness men created trusts, which allowed them to monopolize the control the market. This borough many issues as only few handful received the profits and any competition, if any, was eliminated. In part this was also the governments fault as only the bills they had passed contained many loopholes which allowed them to do what they wanted to do.
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest problem was socially because of how the workers were being treated. Mainly because many business owners had social Darwinism in mind and the fear of losing ones job in this time kept many people working under cruel bosses.
ReplyDeleteI agree, social darwanish was everywhere during this time period, and swallowed workers alive. I also think that the pressure of immigrants coming also made them feel even worse. they didnt want these outsiders to come and take their jobs.
DeleteThe worst issues facing the gilded ages were economical. Companies would use survival of the fittest theory, because it kept their workers alive. If they didn't know that they were being cheated it is their fault. They should pay attention more often. People would even brag about using this theory. We went into so much debt we had to get loan.
ReplyDeleteLiving in farms everything would be disposed by pigs or either recycled or used for compost. While in the cities they had no plumbing issues in where to dispose of their waste. Smelly streets and piles of garbage soon became the new image of cities. With the waste flowing into the waters contamination to all who drank it. Then with the slaughter houses which had rotten meat and animal waste in the same building. All in all many cities still had work to do.
ReplyDeleteBiggest problem I think was socially because of h the workers started to strike for hours, wages and the working conditions.
ReplyDeleteEspecially the Pullman strike which ended very violently.
Some major social problems were child labor, views on women, minorities and imigrants. Child labor was a major problem because kids of poor families were growing up working. Men also didn't see women as their equivilant. They didn't want women working because they were to work in the house. One of the biggest social issues however was immigrants and minorities. White people didn't like them taking jobs and wages away from them, also they didn't like change.

ReplyDeleteThe gilded age face economic, political, and social issues. Economically the nation was unstable due to big businesses gaining much more influx of money compare to smaller companies. Politically, the House of Representative changes from Republican to Democratic to Republican to Democratic repeatedly which caused for no issue in the nation to be solve. Socially, there became an abundant amount of immigrants looking for labor leaving no job for in born citizens.
The biggest problem was social because there were many immigrants coming in and they were taking up all the jobs so they had to establish laws to control it
ReplyDeleteThe biggest problem was the workers or the farmers that were suffering fromthe loss and what little the big industries were taking from them. They obviously did not like it and began to strike against their own bosses, which believed that they were giving for the greater good.
ReplyDeleteI think that the worst issues during the guided age were socially. Immigrants took most of the work force because they worked for cheap pay, and they didn't really care about the working conditions. It was hard for Americans to get jobs. There was child labor also, and the working conditions for children and women were terrible. Most of the time, bussines owners cheated their workers pay, using the theory of darwanism, and they did nothing about it. Political runners also bribed city livers into voting for them.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest problem was how businesses tired to cheat out their workers and that immigrants kept taking all the jobs
ReplyDeleteOne of the main problems of the gilded age were the cheating and corruption large businesses were cheating their people and making them work for less pay. Another one was social Darwinism. Charles Darwin made up a theory about natural selection and survival of the fittest. Many of the wealthy believed they were so fabulously rich because they were smarter and had worked harder than everyone else. The flip side to Social Darwinism was that the poor were in turn considered ungodly and/or biologically inferior and were left to fend for themselves

The worst economic issue was the emergence of monopolies in big businesses such as oil, steel and railroads. Many people were being cheated on through their wages and were stuck being poor. The worst social issue was that the wealthy people believed they were better then the lower class because they had a lot more money and were more "fit". The worst political issue was that many presidents of the Gilded age were forgotten and there was corruption in the government involving big businesses.
ReplyDeleteLarge businesses tried to cheat their workers and the immigrants would work for a lower wage.
ReplyDeleteA major economic issue was that immigrants were believed to be taking over the work work because they worked for very low wages and in harsh working conditions. Women and kids also worked like that. Businesses also tried to cheat their workers ("survival of the fittest"). A major political issue was that "bosses" would reel in votes in exchange for promising to help the community that would give the votes. A major social issue was the fact that there weren't many labor unions because of fear that they, the protesters, would be fired, and because the government had laws that were against the labor unions.

DeleteSorry :I
The worst economic issue during the Gilded age was big businesses controlling most of the money in the nation and because there were laws made to protect those businesses there was nothing that could be done. The worst political issues was that the House of Representatives constantly switching between Democrats and Republicans so the House was unable to pass any significant law during this time. The worst social issue was the mistreatment of workers and because there were so many immigrants willing to work for less, labor uions went away during this time period.
ReplyDeleteThe survival of the fittest was often getting used by factory owners. They cheated people already in poverty of their money. At this time immigrants were seeking to the land of the free for work for been lower pay. Any sort of issue with that they give the job to an immigrant for lower pay that will save the company money. The federal government supported the factory work not the workers so any SRT of rise against the companies would automatically be stopped in the name of the government.
ReplyDeleteTheir are many issues with the gilded age. Economical and social issues following the gilded age affected the people, rather the working ckass . Being cheated and treated foully with their working environmental conditions. Workers had to withstand those terms to remain employed , and if one choose to rebel he or she was easily replaced by a immigrant worker.
ReplyDeleteThere were many social, political, and economical problems during the gilded age. A big social problem was that the immigrants were taking jobs for less pay causing the people who were born there to have no jobs. Big businesses would cheat people and say Its was because survival of the fittest causing economical problems. During this time the house of representatives kept changing from Republican to Democratic.
ReplyDeleteIn 1890, Congress passed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, Pension Act and the McKinley tariff allowing the government to buy more silver to produce currency, give money to Civil War vets and increase duties on foreign goods. However cheating workers of wages was a huge problem at the time, leading to the homestead strike which protested against the wage cuts at Carnegie's steel plant in Pittsburgh. Lastly ending with the Surpreme Court's ruling of the Plessy v. Ferguson issues. That legalized segregation by "seperate but equal" facilities for blacks and whites.
ReplyDeleteIn the Gilded Age, the economic problem was that too many businesses were cheating others, meaning they were making more money and therefore leaving others broke. Socially, the influx of immigrants, mainly the Chinese, led to overpopulation in the urban cities. Politically, no one, Democrats and Republicans, wanted to get involved because they decided that it would be better to keep their noses out of how others o their business.

ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest political problems in the Gilden Age was the political participitation in busnisses. They wanted to be apart of the cities and attempt to control the manner the companies did their sales and ect. One of the biggest economic problem was the appearance of the monopolies that would control the smaller busnisses and make the head of the industries greedier. One of the social issues was the increase immigrants that would disrupt the workers that sought the labor unions. The labor unions would fail because other immigrants didn't mind the harsh jobs.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Gilded Age America faced issues in economics, politics and social. Big businesses started to take control over others. There was a growth of economic power. There was a mixture of Democrat and Republican parties constantly changing and controlling the House of Representatives due to the fact that no one wanted to disturb the balance between the North and the South after the Civil War. The businesses hired many workers and immigrants to work for them but the wage were low and urs were long.
ReplyDeleteThe worst political issues was that the party bossers and the machine politics interefered with the voters. They would bribe especially poor people into voting for them. The worst economic issue was that the rapid industrialization. There were a lot of jobs but then immigrants started coming and would take the jobs for less pay. The worst social issue is all the immigrants coming in and taking over.
ReplyDeleteThe worst economic issue facing the Gilded Age cities was that if they weren't able to sustain a good business with good amount of sales, they were forced out of business(the business world was a competition). I chose it because I think that even though it wasn't an issue for big businesses, it was for smaller ones who had to make a living. The worst social issues was that as migration from the countryside to the cities grew, so did the dispute with between the Progressives and the government. I chose this because as much as some Americans wanted to keep the nation stable, others wanted control over the government. The middle class people who migrated went with the idea to regain control of the government which led to the political issue. Politics were being ignored very much during the time so their wouldnt be another upset between the balance after the Civil War. I chose this issue because even though they didn't went to mess with the balance ignoring the government wouldn't help them keep it. However after population in the cities began to increase, the Progressives wanted the government to take a larger role in keeping the economy, urbanization, and businesses stable.
ReplyDeleteThe Gilded Age was faced with many issues. Economically, with rapid industrialization, smaller companies began to be unstable. Socially, immigrants were being cheated on wages and lived in poverty so they couldn't do much about it. Politically, political bosses would tell residents to vote for candidates for their benefit and would bribe these bosses for the vote.
ReplyDeleteEconomically, One of the biggest problems was how they would try to cheat their workers and immigrants. Socially, the major influx of Chinese immigrants. And politically, the bosses would get their votes by saying they would help the community in exchange.
ReplyDeleteThe worst issue that the gilded age faced was social and economical. The social issue was that there was Chinese immigrants coming to the country and were starting to take american jobs. With the economical issue, the bosses try to cheat their employees to work for them for less pay.
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest problems in political gilden age was involvement in business. Politically, bosses would tell there workers to vote for candidates for there benefit. Economically, the monopolies were the problem because they would try to control smaller business. And socially, immigrants were being used and lived in proverty which left them no choice.
ReplyDeleteMarcelle-The American constitution focused on having a government deriving its power from the people, but with the emerging big businesses the country was at risk of plutocracy. The major business owners such as Rockefeller, defeated competition with trusts and cheap prices. Even major railroad businesses like union pacific bribed politicians. The idea of Darwanism encouraged business managers to use immigrant workers at unfair wages to make their millions. The out of control power these businesses held was the major issue of the gilded age.
ReplyDeleteThe major political issues of the Gilded Age were the tariff, currency reform and civil service reform. The first two issues were of obvious interest to businessmen, and they lobbied and spent freely to gain support for favorable tariff legislation and business-friendly monetary policy. Their efforts were countered vigorously by progressive groups opposed to tight money and high tariffs that raised the cost of consumer goods.
ReplyDeletethe biggest problems that were happening was that businesses were cheating their workers and the influx of immigrants were taking all the jobs
ReplyDeleteOne of the biggest issues socially was child labor. During the Gilded Age families living in the cities were very poor. Everyone in the family had to work including the children. The children were unable to go to school and had to work in factories to help support their families. The factories were dangerous and the children had to work long hours.
ReplyDeleteThe worst economic issues facing Gilded Age cities were the unfair practices of companies and corruption in trusts. Big company owners cheated out their employees and would hire immigrants that would work for lower wages.
ReplyDeleteThe main issues with the gilded age was the economical stand point that big companies had an abundance of money compared to all the little companies, and also immigrants taking up most jobs kind of intimidated the Americans to a certain extent.
ReplyDeleteGreg Goods
Socially, wealthy people would look down on lower class people who did not have enough money because immigrants would take their jobs.
ReplyDeleteIn this era, the socio-economic hierarchy was vastly divided between the lower and upper classes.
DeleteThe socio-economic hierarchy was vastly divided into the wealthy and poor. The middle class was feeble in comparison.
DeleteOne of the more morbid issues during the era was the abuse in child labor. With unregulated hours and sparse breaks, children were mistreated and malnourished. The work enviorments typically were unsanitary as well as hazardous. Accidental mutilation among the children who worked with the machines
