#1) labor and working conditions : factory act of 1891 raising the minimum age for child labor to be 10 and the next being the prohibition of employing a women within four weeks of childbirth
ReplyDeleteRoosevelt, as a main contributor to progressive reform, made factory conditions more sanitary and suitable to work in.

Delete2)The role of the federal government in World Affairs grew. Theodore Roosevelt lead the country in the idea of Imperialism. The United States became more involved in world affairs such as the Spanish American War.
ReplyDeleteThe Department of Commerce and Labor was created in 1903 (department was split into two separate department) to oversee government regulation of business and to monitor labor relations. The government grew bigger with all the regulations that were made.
DeletePrompt 2: Once president Roosevelt was in office, the federal government strengthen, since he showed the trust who really was in charge.He was the very first trust buster and created the trust busting policy to break up and dissolve the big business. As he continued to break companies like Northern Securities, the laissez faire faded away and brought a new authority to the federal government.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Roosevelt broke up the bad trusts and the good trusts were okay. He helped control the power the big companies exerted.
Delete#1 The progressive reforms were very successful when it come to labor and working conditions. They were able to shorten work hours and made working conditions safer for everyone by having labor unions make Congress change laws.

DeleteThey had a hard time doing it though because at the beginning one law that they favored was used against them, they had a o work really hard to change working conditions.
DeleteIt was a good thing that the working hour and conditions became better because employees were at risk of losing their jobs to immigrants who would work for much lower wages. Employees could not afford for this to happen.
DeleteThey also made sure to not hire a woman whiting 4 weeks of child delivery.
DeletePrompt 1 - If the new laws did much to change the conditions of factory workers and labor then the progressive reforms cooulf be proved to be succesful however if it were not for "The Jungle' then these changes would have taken longer to complete.
ReplyDeleteWorking conditions consisted of non stop mundane working , always the same process never changing. Usually workers were cheated and mistreated . If a worker complained or rioted then they would be easily replaced with others more anxious to have a job. Very tricky to riot when the workers toiled all day and did not have enough strenghth to deend thier rights.
I agree that workers often experienced difficulty to change their poor working conditions due to the fact that they often worked all day or feared losing their jobs to someone else.

ReplyDeleteDuring the progressive era from 1890-1915 many believed that not much was accomplished for the improvement of the nation. However, many changes were made which included the Meat Inspection Act which improved urban life and the introduction of secret ballots which improved the state and federal government. Therefore, the progressive era caused many changes that created a positive impact within the United States.
Roosevelt was one of the biggest reformers in the progressive reform. He was able to make the changes that benefited everyone.

ReplyDeleteMany people believed that William Howard Taft did more to change the federal government during his presidency. However President Roosevelt passed the Pure Food and Drug Act and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1902 in world affairs. Therefore the government experienced many drastic changes under the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
Dont forget that he stirred things up when he refused to end his speech even after he was shot thus earning him more respect and crowd approval.

ReplyDeletethe progressive reforms got women the right to vote, and a number of election reforms such as the recall, referendum, and direct election of Senators (making the U.S more democratic) They also passed laws establishing federal regulation of the meat packing, drug, railroad industries, and strengthened anti-trust laws.
Prohibition was also part of the progressive movement.
DeleteFemale organizations were made to create protest. And establish messages towards women's right , being recognized by Taft.
Delete#2- During Theodore Rooselvelt's presidency, he put down the Northern Securities Company which controlled the majority of the railroads. This was one of the first trusts taken down when Roosevelt took office with the Sherman Anti Trust Act.

DeletePrompt 1: The progressive reforms were effective in the urban life by the foundation of settlement houses. These houses allowed poor, jobless immigrants to settle there and helped them learn and gain skills to increase their chance of finding a job. These houses were usually ran by white middle class women. One very popular house the the Hull House founded by Jane Adams in Chicago.

ReplyDeleteTheodore Roosevelt made a great impact as president. He went after many bad trusts and passed laws to limit the power of big businesses. It was these laws that helped bring power back to the federal government.
He had a reform named The Square Deal in which he saw both tge people and business owners to be treated fair. He did help bring power back to the federal government.

ReplyDeleteTheodore Roosevelt was the father of conservatio. He formed the united states forestry service. He also reserved lands for public use and huge irrigation projects. Roosevelt created the Antiquities Acts which allowed his successors and himself to proclaim hisstorical landmarks in federal ownership as national monuments.
Don't forget that Roosevelt also stopped trust in the us when he enforced the ani trust act

I agree, although Roosevelt only broke trusts that were "bad" and thought that some of the trusts were in fact "good" and necessary and effecient to the economy.

- their attempts to better working conditions were some what successful, butdid not create as much of an effect as it was ddesired because their was so many deaths by the machinery and also child labor all the progressives seem to do was push for eight-hour wok day and push for labor reforms
Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine were the photographers that exposed child labor
DeleteAlso since children were useful because their size allowed them to move and fit in small places and they were paid very little. So, the reforms wanted to stop child labor but instead it just led to working curfews so it wasnt so successful.

ReplyDeleteThe Progressive reforms were widely influent in the country. Labor unions went on strike to get more laws passed to protect the laborers. Women began the suffrage movement to fifth for equality, and monopolies, and big businesses began to fail. This led to the creation of the Sherman Anti trust Act and the 19th amendment.
Good point about the 19th amendment. Maybe it's my opinion, but I really do feel strongly about the child labor laws.
DeleteLabor and Working Conditions: Workers made an attempt to end the corruption in their job. They got tired of being manipulated for working long hours,which caused a lot of injuries,with little pay.They also made an attempt to stop child labor in the coal mines.

Delete#2) President Roosevelt was know as a big trust buster but he only busted the bad trust that didnt follow the Sherman Antitrust act. He left all the good trust alone. However, President Taft busted way more trust than Roosevelt.

Before, there really wasn't much support for laborers. Even though they had the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, it did not help labor unions much, and trusts used it to their advantage.
But then everything changed when Theodore Roosevelt attacked the issue.
The anthrite coal strike was occuring, and he wanted to send an army to stop it, but came to a compromise with the workers. Soon, he issued the Square Deal, and suggested 8-9 hour work days and increased payment. The Department of Commerce and Labor was also created.
2.) The federal government had an increase in world affairs slightly prior to and during Theodore Roosevelt's term. Before his term, thanks to Alfred Thayer we had an increased interest in strengthening our navy. Although Mahan thought that the United States was not ready for expansionism into other countries, we disproved that by annexing Hawaii in 1898, and During the presidency of Roosevelt, The United States took their own role in other countries by being the "Policeman" of the world. With the US feeling nationalism due to the White man's burden, the United States took firm hold of the "Big Stick" and sought out to keep other countries in like and at bay. We also wanted to increase trade between other heavy markets such as china, and went far as making the open door trading policy. Way before this period, the United States studied and listened to the ways of Washington, and stood away from getting into other countries' affairs.

2) Theodore Roosevelt took action almost immediately. He "trust busted" all the corporations in which he sought to be negative and left the good ones in place. He broke up northern securities which was led by JP Morgan into smaller businesses.
ReplyDeleteHe wanted to stop small businesses from arising so they wont spread and he wont be able to have something with all of them. Having the size of trusts they had at that time was enough for Roosevelt.
DeleteThe progressive reform benefited a lot on the labor and working conditions. Not only were wages more reasonable, the put an end to child labor. The progressive reform also benefited the middle to lower class because of the economical help given from the progressive. Just another way to keep the government fair.

ReplyDeletePrompt 1: Progressive reforms were widely influent. Attempts to better working conditions were some what successful but did not make much of an impact as expected to do so. National Labor Union was formed to push for labor reforms and shorten work hours and conditions.

Before no one really paid any sort of attention to them as much in concerning the government but Roosevelt took advantage that they had the money to help them.

ReplyDeleteTheodore Roosevelt, supported the conservationists. Legislative effort was devoted to changing the way America used its land, especially in the West, since a plethora of emigrant were searching for more/bettere land.
The Newlands Act of 1902 placed the federal government in an activist role in the areas of water management and reclamation.
Therefore the federal government greatly benefited the conservation idea.
The role of the federal government change under the presidency of Roosevelt in the issue of world affairs by going from an isolationist state of mind to an imperialistic state of mind. Under Roosevelt the federal government viewed the u.s. as the world's policeman. the US increasingly got concerned with world affairs in asia and the pacific. Another example of this new imperialistic state of mind was in The US's gaining of the panama canal.
ReplyDeleteone of the more morbid issues was that of the abuse and mistreatment of child labor. Since the were no limit nor regulations, children often worked hours with seldom breaks. The conditions of the work enviroment were unsanitary as well as hazardous. Accidental mutilation was a common factor in the machine industries.

Under his administration he was successful in creating some of the first major all-inclusive national conservation policies in the nation, and as far as trusts were concerned, he was often called and referred to as the trust buster.
