Where the Progressives a success or a failure?
Gilded Age problems sometimes seemed intractable: corruption, party bosses, child labor, alcoholism, pollution, trusts, etc. Progressives sought to correct those problems. Although the term includes a number of interests and groups, Progressives were idealistic reforms who both felt empowered and sought to use the power of the federal government to effect change.
Starting with the Populist movement in the American Midwest, reform movements gained momentum. While the Populists could not be ignored, they failed to elect one of their own to the presidency. Check out the Spark Notes site http://www.sparknotes.com/history/american/gildedage/section6.rhtml
But what started as an agrarian movement in our heartland was transformed into a broader Progressive movement in our urban centers. Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson all made Progressive reforms that transformed the United States and changed the course of our history. ( http://www.sparknotes.com/history/american/gildedage/section9.rhtml)
But were the Progressives truly effective? Where they successful? That's still a topic of debate.
Decided for yourself whether the Progressives were a success or failure and give an ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, and POLITICAL FACT to justify your reasoning.
I would say yes the progressives were effective because unlike other reform movements this reform came from the the middle class, not the lower class. They would have had the knolege and skill. Also the progressives made up the majority of the population.--Jonathan Gonzalez
ReplyDeleteYou didn't mention anything of political or economical. If you could, add on to what you said including the changes that came along with child labor, and women's right or how the government was finally able to take control again.
DeleteRegardless of the points missing, saying that progressives were successful in making large changes in America
DeleteThe progressives were ultimately unsuccessful due to other repeated failures at making a substantial change in the nation. When the progressives nominated John Bidwell they managed to win a popular vote but still lost to Cleveland. As further proof they never managed to gain free silver, and the hope of that ended with the gold standard. The progressives inspired Coxeys army to march to the capital for cheaper money but was ultimately arrested. No substantial change occurred due to the failures. mARCELLE
ReplyDeleteNo substantial change occurred due to the failures. I didn't think of it like that.
DeleteThe progressives in the progressive era were successful. Women got the right to vote with the 19th amendment, the Clayton antitrust protected against monopolies, and the nation labor union made the 8 hour workday.
ReplyDeletePresident Roosevelt helped the labor unions politically and he backed them up in court cases. This helped the progressives attain their goals.
DeleteRoosevelt attempted to strike a balance between employers and employees in labor disputes and pledged to give Americans a "Square Deal" that prized a person's character above his class.
DeleteAlthough many may view the progressive Era as a failure it indeed helped regulate and provide safer regulations. One particular regulation that helped bloom the progression was the Adminstration of Food and Drug Act. At first meat such as cows and pigs were slaughtered in various small houses usually painted red to symbolize the blood of the animals. Maggots and mice ran free containimating the meat which was then sold by the but he to poor consumers. Thanks to the food Act many less diseases were controlled and animals kept in leaner facilities.
ReplyDeletegood thing too but this new regulation apply to the new companies that dealt with food processing?
DeleteWonderful Pacheco
ReplyDeleteThe progressives focus were to get the nation politically, socially, and economically balance. They wanted to incorporated trust between businesses, rather they were big or small, they also wanted to manage the mass influx of immigrants. The progresives wanted these responsibility to fall upon the government. I would have to say the progressives were failures because if they would have succeeded at first to get the nation organize the Gilded Age probably would not be in our history.
What do you mean by 'not be in our history'? Because the Progressive Era was in response to the Gilded Age problems, not after.
DeleteI think the progressives were successful In what they were trying to accomplish. They wanted to correct the problems that they had during the guilded age, such as corruption and whatnot, and people like president Roosevelt did get ysomewhere with trying to correct those issues. On an economic level, Roosevelt filled a law suit against monopolistic trusts that hurt consumers. The supreme court backed him up. On a social level, he was a supporter of miners during the Anthracite strike, and tried to offer miners negotiation of wages and work hours to protect and conserve coal. He also supported better working conditions and treatment of women in factories. On a political level, congress passed the Hepburn Act to strengthen the Interstate Commerce Commission and give it more power to control the railroads. Even though they may have not accomplished everything they might have hoped, they still made great changes to our country during this time period. And I'm Jona Martin:-)
ReplyDeleteThe progressives were successful because they tried to correct the corrupted government, they wanted to make businesses equal so they wouldn't be economically unstable, and they wanted to help lower immigrant influx.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they created equal environments for businesses with the passage of acts such as the Elkins Act.
DeleteI agree. The main political changes provided for substantial equality within businesses in America.
DeleteThey also passed laws to stop the influx of immigration in the country.
DeleteI believe the progressive era was very successful defiantly For women of this era. Economically the mocement was essentially a middle class phenomenon helping primarily activist in the middle class gradading college and becoming sucessful. Socially more women are taking a stand and making a diffrence in the late 1800s. Politically it provided means for women to become engaged in public issue in the era when the votering was still restricted to men in most states.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Progressive Era, it was a big increase of population in cities, immigration, and industrial labor. Although the era created a time of change in the economy and the market, there were many social problems that affected many women. With that, woman played a major role in the awareness of inequality, woman’s rights, child education, and woman’s suffrage. During this era, many women worked in industrial factories that presented poor working conditions that were unsafe to many woman workers. GO WOMEN. C:
DeleteI agree, but don't forget that it also put an end to child labor. To protect children from the harsh and dangerous working environment.
DeleteProgessisim was based of the middle class though midlyeffectiveinthe social problems of the era it did not do enough for the economics problems the low an middle class faced. The movement was politically effective because of the grew depression in the late 1930s and early 1940s that led to the new deal coalition that led to the great middle class.
ReplyDeleteI would say that the progressive era was a success. Socially, women got the right to vote. (19th amendment) Politically, the movement was trying to eliminate corruption in the government. And economically, the movement was helping the middle class, helping people become more successful.
ReplyDeleteI say the progressive era was a success. Politically, the movement was trying to exterminate corruption. Economically, the middle class was rising to a more successful rate. And socially, more women were being allowed more rights.
ReplyDeleteThey also passed a law that stopped the influx of immigration.
Deletei believe the progressive era was a success because new laws paved a way for a better democracy. women gained the right to vote, an end to child labor, and the banning of alcohol
ReplyDeleteCreating the meaning of a free country with society social classes being given the chance to move up in the ranks.
DeleteAlthough there were some beneficial amendments passed during the Progressive Era, I don't think it was completly effective. Politically, they wanted the nation to prosper, so the Progressives wanted to do it with a stronger position of the government creating less freedom for the people. Also then the Muckrakers had a large impact on the people as they wrote about social injustices. Economic wise, however it was pretty effective because Roosevelt was able to regulate big businesses, help organized labor, protect consumers, and conserve natural resources with his Square Deal.
ReplyDeleteThe progressives were successful. Monopolies, like the railroads, were broken up and the regulation of buisnesses were working. President Roosevelt was a big political figure who helped the progressives. He supported strikers with federal troops and was against the company. State governments also helped by using secret ballots to keep companies from causing more corruption.Progressives success was largely due to the unification of the middle class.
ReplyDeleteWomen were also given more rights by the 19th amendment.
DeleteAlso, a law was passed that reduced the influx of immigrants.
DeleteThe Progressive Era was successful to me because Theodore Roosavelt used is presidential power to give Americans a square deal. Economically he also started trust busting in order to regulate big businesses. Socially muckrakers also published their opinions of large corporations to the public which then lead to the meat inspection and pure food and drug act. Politically the election of William Howard Taft further supported the progressive era.
ReplyDeleteWith his Square Deal, he conserved natural resources, and he was quite successful with regulating the businesses.
DeleteI believe that the Progressive Era was a success because of the fact that it put an end to child labor. The idea of labor protection (unions, working conditions, benefits & safety) motivated immigrants and others to migrate from rural areas to more urban and industrialized cities for work.
ReplyDeleteAlso the 16, 17, 18, and 19 amendments were passed which made a huge difference in our country
DeleteThe Progressives were successful because the idea that they had in mind along with them trying to fulfill those ideas or movements were possible by the Presidents that become or considered themselves Progressives. President Taft was able to get rid of all the monopolies and trusts all together with a little help from the previous President, Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was exposed to the harsh conditions of companies and factories, therefore he was able to fix and remove problems that were caused by mostly fruit and meat factories. He also was the first president to show the true definition of what a president is, and taking control of the troubles that the Gilded Age left, while the government of back them were corrupt and controlled by the big businesses.
ReplyDeletei believed that the progressive era was a success because woman were socially accepted and got the right to vote, tried to fix the most corrupted business and helped out to lower immigration that was happening
ReplyDeleteI think the progressives were a succes. They helped women get the right to vote congress passed laws establishing federal regulation of railroad industries. Also four constitutional amendments were adopted which authorized an income tax, provided for the direct election of senators, extended the vote to women, and prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages.
ReplyDeleteI believe the progressives were ultimately successful because they came primarily from the middle class and had the ability to make a change. Through their work they were able destroy trusts and monopolies, such as the dispansion of the giant railroad company with the Northern Securities decision. They stopped manipulation and bribery in politics with direct primary elections and secret ballots. The progressives also improved the standard of living by cleaning up food businesses with the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressive Era was progressive because:
ReplyDeletePolitically, bosses had dominated the American political scene; major reform brought about by the Progressives was to wrestle power away from the ruling elite. By pushing for primary elections, through the passage of 17th Amendment which mandates that all U.S. Senators be elected by the people, they were able to give the power back to the people.
Socially, it was the 18th Amendment. Prohibition was something that was on the rise throughout the country via partial and all out bans on alcohol in many states. The Progressives spread this movement to the national level through the passage of the 18th Amendment.( Minimum wage, maximum hours, and child labor laws were enacted)
Economically, the Progressives were able to have presidents T. Roosevelt and W. Wilson pass legislation that regulated large corporations. To achieve their goals, the Interstate Commerce Commission and Federal Trade Commission established regulations to rein in monopolies and corporations using unfair trading practices.
Also for political,, the 19th amendment allowed women to finally vote.
DeleteI think the progressives were successful. Economically, the regulation of businesses were brought out to the surface by Theodore Roosevelt. Politically, the progressives wanted to drive out corruption for a stronger, much powerful government in which would result in less freedom for the people. Socially, women were granted the right to vote.
ReplyDeleteTheodore Roosevelt goal was to regain the power that had left the people and make it stronger. He removed multiple trusts and acted against the monopolists.
DeleteI believe that the progressives were successful. They had president Roosevelt, who launched a collection of progressive domestic policies known as a square deal. Progressives challenged industrial and political corruption at the state and local levels. Voters also helped eliminate bribes and reduce the power of political machines. Progressives wanted to regain control of the government from special interests like the railroads and trusts. They also wanted to protect the rights of organized labors, women, blacks, and consumers.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, I believe the Progressive Era was successful because President Roosevelt and President Taft had profound involvement in removing trusts and large monopoly business. For example, President Roosevelt made congress dissolve Northern Securities Company and President Taft dissolved Standard Oil Company. Both Presidents brought suits against trusts and helped the business world succeed again.
ReplyDeleteThe progressives were successful since they wanted help America by eliminating corruption by exposing political machines, giving more economic and political rights for women and, give a graduated income tax that would fall hardest on the wealthy and least on the poor.
ReplyDeleteIt was also this era that broke up trusts that were hurting the American people.
DeleteThe progressive era was most definitely a success. For starters, Socially, by the 19th amendment, women got the right to vote. Corruption in the government was trying to get eliminated by the movement in a political manner. Last but not least, economically, the movement was helping the middle class, and over all, was helping people become more successful.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive era was successful. This is what led to the end of child labor and helped women get the right to vote which created the 19th amendment. It tried to stop the corruption in government and they wanted their government to become stronger and to protect the right of organized labor. There was a depression that hit the nation in 1893 and thats when President Cleveland borrowed money from J.P Morgan to save the economy.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the progressive era was a success. Politically they were trying to end corruption in the government. Socially women started getting rights for example they got the right to vote. Economically Roosevelt started to regulate business so employees wont get cheated.
ReplyDeleteAlso president launched a series of policies to try to reduce the corruption.
DeleteThe Progressives were successful because they helped women obtain the right to vote with the creation of the 19th amendment, incorporating the secret ballot, a voting method in which the voter's choice is secret/anonymous (to ensure an honest choice that isn't influenced by intimidation or bribery), and by calling for a national income tax.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive era was a success of creating a more equal society with the passage of the 19th amendment and with the end of child labor. Many citizens could start a living without the competion of outsourced labor. Allowing a greater opportunity for people of a lower or middle class in society to charge.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive era was a success because presidents like Theodore Roosevelt were able to pass many progressive laws. More of the country was in support of progressive reforms so more could be done. Roosevelt was able to pass laws that protected the public from big businesses and worked against trusts that hurt the public.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressive Movement, also called the Progressive Era, was very successful. New laws enacted in this time, such as the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Antitrust Act, paved the way for a better democracy. Women were finally granted suffrage after years of tireless lobbying. Public health laws about regarding food, water and drugs were put into place. .
ReplyDeleteThe meat inspection act was one of the laws that made sure the people were receiving good, healthy meat to eat.
DeleteThe Sherman Anti-Trust Act, however, ended up basically helping the trusts out instead of the strikers.
DeleteThe progressive movement was a major success because of the actions from President Theodore Roosevelt. He was able to pass the Meat Inspection Act to make sure the America people were receiving good, healthy meat. Women were finally able to get suffrage and the rights they deserve. The progressive movement was able to put a stop to child labor.
ReplyDeleteIn my point of view I feel that the progressive movement was successful. President Theodore Roosevelt passed many laws and more countries were in favor and supported the progressive movement
ReplyDeleteThe progressive movement was a success from my eyes. They were a group of middle class people that had a majority of the population which actually created change in America.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive moment was successful. Yes, there were some failures but the successes were greater. Economically, Roosevelt was not entirely against business trusts, but he did make it his duty to tackle out the trusts that were unfair and corrupt. Socially, women gained the right to vote when the 19 amendment was passed. Politically, the 17th amendment was passed which established direct election of US senators by popular vote which decreased corruption within government.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive movement was very sussesful because many laws that helped the laborers were passed. They pressured congress with strikes, that led to the creationof the Sherman Anti-trust Act, the 19th Amendment or the Meat Inspection Act. Gerizim Pena
ReplyDeleteFrom my stand point, the progressive movement was very successful because it put an end to child labor and began women suffrage. Theodore Roosevelt also had a hand in it as he was able to pass the meat inspection act.
ReplyDeleteProgressive Movement was successful although their were some failures. Many acts were passed for example the Meat Inspection Act, Pure Food and Drug Act, Clayton Anti Trust Act, Interstate Commerece Act, and the Sherman Anti Trust Act. The 16 ammendment created a more graduated income tax, which was more fair. The 17 amendment expanded power to the people, providing direct election for senators. The 19th amendment granted suffrage to woman.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe the progressives were successful. Monopolies, like the railroads, were broken up and the regulation of businesses were working. President supported all regulations. He supported strikers with federal troops and was against the company. State governments got involved by using secret ballots to keep companies from causing more corruption. This success was largely due to the unification of the middle class.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Progressives were very successful. President Roosevelt was able to pass laws protecting the public from big businesses. The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed allowing only good, clean and healthy meat be consumed by Americans who were buying and consuming the meat. The 19th amendment prohibited any U.S. citizen from being denied the right to vote due to their sex allowing women to now have the right to vote.
